Trump has already called for mass deportations from the town, saying last week: "We're going to start with Springfield and Aurora." "Once a country is designated, each individual covered by the designation must apply separately for TPS status," she said, noting that existing TPS holders must also renew their paperwork with each redesignation. However, if Trump wins, Leblang told BI this is far less likely. Indeed, it already was once before when Trump sought to end TPS for certain countries during his last administration.

CNN —There’s no political playbook for how to deal with another apparent assassination attempt against a major-party presidential candidate within weeks of an election. The second apparent assassination attempt comes against the backdrop of a turbulent campaign that has defied convention and predictions. Another apparent attempt on his life is likely to have some level of personal impact on the former president. In normal circumstances, an apparent assassination attempt against a presidential candidate might be expected to unleash a surge of sympathy that could translate into a political boost. But it’s too early to say whether the second apparent assassination attempt will have greater political impact than the first.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — It was meant to be an event to help heal the community. Instead, Haitian residents and advocates were confronted by a small group of frustrated Springfield residents and at least one right-wing provocateur Saturday evening outside the local Haitian Community Help & Support Center. They questioned why so many immigrants had moved into Springfield “illegally,” a claim that city officials have repeatedly said is not true. Haitian residents and people who had gathered to support them deescalated the confrontation shortly before police arrived. Thrust into the national spotlight by baseless — and to many, racist — rumors of Haitian residents killing and eating wildlife and pets, its economic comeback has been dramatically overshadowed by tensions that once rarely reached beyond city council meetings.

The rumor mill about immigrants attacking household pets got its start in thinly sourced anecdotes shared at government meetings and on social media. Some of the images shared by social media users were openly prejudiced, showing Black people chasing after cats. These images and videos often create a more engaging and shareable post — regardless of whether they’re based in truth. There were cats holding military-style rifles to defend themselves, cats holding up political signs, cats and ducks sitting side-by-side, AI-generated humans holding cat-related signs and cats and ducks being cuddled by Trump. At least two of the widely viewed AI videos of Trump and animals were made using the software of Chinese AI startup MiniMax, according to watermarks on the videos.

CNN —Donald Trump wanted to spend this week attacking one of Democratic rival Kamala Harris’ biggest political vulnerabilities. The promotion of the claims overshadowed a series of speeches aimed at the economy and blaming Harris for border security failures. However, during Tuesday’s debate, Trump’s attacks on Harris over immigration veered into the outrageous, as he falsely claimed that migrants are eating dogs and cats in Springfield. Democratic National Committee rapid response director Alex Floyd on Friday highlighted Trump’s relationship with Loomer and other controversial allies. CNN —Some people really do leave money to their pets. Estate attorneys told CNN they’re seeing more incidences of people making financial plans for their pets after they die. Twenty-nine states have enacted pet trust laws since 2008, and now every state, plus Washington, DC, has some form of guidelines, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However, if a person names a guardian for their pet, they can leave money and property to that person. dpa/picture alliance/Eventpress/SipaFlorida attorney Peggy Hoyt, author of “All My Children Wear Fur Coats,” told CNN she urges her clients to leave comprehensive instructions for pet caretakers.
