CNN —Archaeologists have identified the cannibalized remains of a senior officer who perished during an ill-fated 19th century Arctic expedition, offering insight into its lost crew’s tragic and grisly final days. The remains identified as Fitzjames’ in the new study, published September 24 in the Journal of Archaeological Science, were among them. The remains of James Fitzjames, a senior officer who took part in Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to the Northwest Passage, showed signs of having been cannibalized, a new study said. However, unlike Fitzjames’ remains, Gregory’s bones did not display any cut marks suggestive of cannibalism. Canada’s national parks service and the Inuit communities found the final resting place of the HMS Erebus in 2014 and the HMS Terror in 2016.

Tesla has long offered what it calls Full Self-Driving or FSD, currently priced at $8,000, as an option on its cars. Musk has insisted that the company’s data shows that FSD is already safer than cars driven by humans. ‘Overly optimistic’This is certainly not the first time that Musk has laid out ambitious time frames for his plans for self-driving cars.

Jeffrey Talajic, who runs MagicTripTools.com, analyzed Florida park prices at Walt Disney World and Universal Resort Orlando going back to 1990, using data from the Orlando Sentinel newspaper. Talajic found that Disney World raised prices 22 out of the past 35 years, and Universal raised theirs 23 times. Jeffrey Talajic/MagicTripTools.comMindy Marzec, who runs the travel website thisfairytalelife.com, said she always jokes that three things in life are certain: death, taxes and Disney parks raising ticket prices. In Florida, guests can save between $60 and $200 per night on Disney World ticket and hotel packages for much of the first half of 2025. Another deal on the Disney World website offers hotel discounts between 10% and 25% on many dates from January through April.

Still, the company has sought to offer discounted tickets and hotel stays for those who opt to visit Disneyland during off-peak periods. Much like the airline, hotel and even concert entertainment industries, Disney's theme parks operate on a demand-based pricing model. But to handle demand, Disney has a tiered ticket system. Tier 0 is the lowest demand, the $104 base ticket price, while Tier 6 is the highest demand and will see an increase of $12 to $206 per ticket. Disney's online ticketing website for those theme parks — Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot — already reflects pricing increases for 2025, which were reported back in February.

Since then, I've been to 86 countries and have learned how to travel on a budget. I book directly with local businesses and I embrace public transportation, among other things. Now, 20 years later, I've visited 86 countries on a shoestring budget. It feels more ethical, too, as our money went straight to people living by the river instead of a tour company based elsewhere. If that is the case, make sure to book the tours while you're in the country, as it will save you money.

As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Tampa Bay, some residents are saying that the resources needed to evacuate — especially gasoline — are in short supply, despite a mandate to leave the area. Debris from Helene also poses a risk as Milton approaches because the objects can turn into dangerous projectiles. Hurricane Milton could reduce Disney earnings, Goldman says
  + stars: | 2024-10-08 | by ( Kristian Burt | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Projected park closures and disruptions from Hurricane Milton could cut into Walt Disney 's earnings, according to Goldman Sachs analysts. Goldman Sachs reduced its estimate for Disney's fiscal 2025 earnings per share from $5.22 to $5.14. The storm is projected to make landfall around the Tampa area, which hasn't been hit directly by a hurricane since 1921. The storm is then projected to head toward Orlando, where Disney World is located, as it decreases in intensity. Spokespeople for Disney did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on the new earnings estimates.

CNN —An elderly man narrowly escaped with his life after a harrowing attack by a bear and her three cubs in his own home. “It’s certainly lucky we didn’t have a fatality,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer Lucas Martin said. Dating back to 1960, there have been 96 reported bear attacks on humans in the state. Experts urge different approaches during bear attacks: If a grizzly or brown bear charges, play dead, the National Park Service said. But if black bears – like the ones who entered the elderly man’s home – charge and attack, the park service warns to “fight with everything you have.”“Do not play dead.”

In San Jose, a center of California’s housing crisis, one of the oldest and last remaining Japanese-owned farms in the state will be demolished to pave the way for urban housing. San Jose is home to one of only three existing Japantowns in the country and the only one built on agricultural roots. In July, the San Jose City Council voted to turn the Sakauye family’s 23-acre fruit orchard into a mixed-used development constituting nearly 1,500 apartment units and town houses. Vanessa Hatakeyama, the acting director of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose, said the Sakauye farm is a remnant of San Jose’s agricultural landscape — one that was built by Japanese immigrants — before it was transformed by the tech and suburban housing booms.
