Opinion: Trump’s ridiculous terrorism claim
  + stars: | 2023-11-14 | by ( Peter Bergen | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
Despite Trump’s much-vaunted travel ban, there was plenty of terrorism on his watch as the 45th president of the United States. Also, the most lethal antisemitic attack ever in the United States took place on October 27, 2018, when a terrorist killed eleven people at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. It seems, at least in Trump’s mind, that lethal acts of terrorism carried out by far-right terrorists don’t count as terrorism. Terrorism did not disappear with Trump, and his proposed “solution,” were he to become president again – amping up the Muslim travel ban – likely won’t accomplish much of anything. As Trump spends more time on the campaign trail, we will surely be seeing more factually challenged statements of this type.

Ambulances rush them daily to hospitals in El Paso, San Diego and Tucson, Ariz., writhing in pain — bones poking out of arms and legs; skulls cracked; spines shattered. The men and women arrive on stretchers flanked by an agent in the telltale green uniform of the U.S. Border Patrol. “One look, and I know it’s another wall fall,” said Brian Elmore, an emergency medicine physician at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso. The patients are all migrants who have crashed to the ground while trying to climb over the wall that separates Mexico and the United States for long stretches of the border. But many migrants have been undaunted by the barriers, and for hundreds of them, the result has been debilitating injuries that require multiple surgeries, according to physicians working in U.S. hospitals near the border.

Homebuyers put down an average of 13.8% of the home price in 2023, according to a Realtor.com analysis of the 150 largest real estate markets for the quarter ending in September. Here's a look at the 15 most expensive real estate markets, based on the median cost for a typical down payment on a home. In Killeen, Texas, median down payment is only $2,182. This includes Fayetteville, North Carolina; Shreveport, Louisiana; and El Paso, Texas, where median down payments are $5,000 or less. U.S. Department of Agriculture loans also require no down payment, which might lead to low down payments in relatively rural areas.

“Es la que mejor relación tiene con los fans y la que logra toda esta fan manía”, comentó Lucas Forte, de 24 años y miembro de otra carpa que había dormido afuera del estadio durante cinco noches desde septiembre. “Me enteré de que ustedes acamparon para tener un buen lugar”, le dijo el jueves a la multitud. His decision came months after a two-week trial in August in which no GOP voters came forward to testify they were unable to vote because of the problems. The ruling is a blow to efforts by GOP leaders in Harris County to overturn November 2022 election results in 17 other local contests. Elections have been scrutinized for several years now in Harris County — which has nearly 5 million residents, most of whom are Latino or Black. The lawsuit was the first filed over Harris County’s November 2022 election results that went to trial. Harris County in recent years has become a recurring target of new Texas voting rules and restrictions passed by GOP lawmakers.

In 1916, the US began forcing Mexicans that crossed the border to bathe in a mix of kerosene and vinegar. A US immigration officer talks to Mexicans in El Paso, Texas, 1916. El Paso was considered to have the ideal dry, warm climate to combat tuberculosis, and so, multiple sanatoriums were built in the city. Since last month, when there was a new surge of arrivals, more than 7,700 migrants have traveled from El Paso to Chicago, Denver and New York, according to city data. “About 99 percent of migrants that come to El Paso choose not to stay in El Paso,” Mr. Rodriguez said. And he wanted to make a political point to Democrats who said they would welcome the migrants. There’s no indication state regulators visited the site or contacted Hallford until more than 10 months after the Penrose funeral home’s registration expired. REUTERS/Jose Luis Gonzalez/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Mexico on Monday called for the U.S. government to mediate with Texas state authorities to ease inspections for cargo trucks crossing the border, as the country's president accused the Texas governor of "complicating the migration situation." State officials restarted costly, intensive cargo truck inspections last month. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has argued they are needed to stem the flow of migrants and illegal drugs into the country. The measure has held up some $1.9 billion in goods, Mexico's national cargo transport chamber said on Sunday. Along with the state-mandated inspections, cargo has been slowed by the temporary closure of U.S. federal processing at several crossings, Mexico's foreign ministry added.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president said Tuesday that he rejected a U.S. request to set up migrant transit centers in Mexico. Neighboring Guatemala has set up one such center, where migrants can apply for U.S. work and refugee visas. “We have been looking at setting up sites in Mexico, because they (the United States) have asked for it,” López Obrador said. The centers are part of a larger migratory strategy aimed at reducing the large number of migrants from Latin American and the Caribbean to the United States. The influx of migrants has caused tension between the United States and Mexico.

Where This Summer Was Relentlessly Hot

Where This Summer Was Relentlessly Hot The planet just experienced its hottest months on record, and by a large margin, scientists said. Some areas, including northern Canada and some of Greenland, show temperatures more than 6 degrees Fahrenheit (3.3 degrees Celsius) above average. Phoenix, which is known for its extreme heat, shows temperatures more than 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) above average. The global map spins to South America, where average daily temperatures were higher than normal for much of the continent. Areas of Sudan and Ethiopia show temperatures greater than 6 degrees Fahrenheit (3.3 degrees Celsius) higher than normal.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump promised to build a border wall that Mexico would pay for during the 2016 campaign but the neighboring country never did. Candidate Joe Biden vowed “not another foot” of the border wall would be built during his presidency. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre continues to dodge questions while Biden bizarrely claimed that the border wall he approved won’t work. “I’ll answer one question on the border wall,” Biden said to reporters in the Oval Office Thursday. “The border wall — the money was appropriated for the border wall.

The message is one more indication of the political and security challenges the U.S.-Mexico border has presented for President Joe Biden. The Biden administration this week took two actions seen by many as moving to the right on immigration. The White House counters that migration has surged across the Western Hemisphere due to regional challenges out of the administration's control. So they are on the streets.”Despite his 2020 promises on the border, Biden has long been more moderate on the issue than some in his party. It hasn’t worked for them before and it won’t work for them this cycle either,” said Pili Tobar, a former senior Biden White House official and Democratic strategist.

Trump’s anti-immigrant comments draw rebuke

It is a very sad thing for our country,” Trump told the right-leaning news site The National Pulse in a video interview published last week. “It’s poisoning the blood of our country. We have seen this kind of toxic rhetoric inspire real-world violence before in places like Pittsburgh and El Paso. Adolf Hitler wrote about the “contamination of the blood” or “blood poisoning” in Mein Kampf. “That’s a normal phrase that is used in everyday life – in books, television, movies, and in news articles.

And right now that leverage is around migration,” said Andrew Selee, the president of the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute. Members of the Mexican National Guard stand on the border between Mexico and Guatemala to prevent the crossing of migrant caravans on October 21, 2022. “The Mexico southern border pretty much was the US southern border,” Meyer said. “What we are looking for is to reach an agreement to confront the migration phenomenon by addressing the causes,” López Obrador said at a news conference. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to travel to Mexico this week along with other cabinet secretaries and meet with López Obrador.
