Stock futures oscillated near the flatline Tuesday night as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision and May's consumer inflation data. S&P 500 futures inched lower by 0.01%, while Nasdaq 100 futures were little changed. During Tuesday's trading, investors' rotation into Apple helped lift the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite to fresh closing highs. Investors are looking to Wednesday's conclusion of the Fed's two-day policy meeting, which will feature an rate policy decision and a subsequent press conference with Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Investors have grown increasingly concerned that the recent strong jobs report and sticky inflation support a higher-for-longer interest rate environment.

Texas-based satellite manufacturer AST SpaceMobile is a risky — but worthwhile — investment, according to UBS. Analyst Christopher Schoell increased his price target for the stock by $6 to $13, implying a whopping 50.8% potential upside as of Friday's close. The shares have climbed nearly 44% so far this year, and skyrocketed about 284% over the past month. "We still see ASTS as a high-risk, high-reward investment that is subject to various risks," Schoell said in a Monday note. There's a growing dominance of technology stocks in the stock market. Using LSEG, we searched for stocks outside the concentrated tech universe that are expected to reach new highs. Citizens Financial has a forward P/E ratio of 12.1 and five-year P/E of about 15, while Fifth Third's forward P/E is 11.1 and its five-year slightly lower, at about 10.8. Analysts polled by LSEG think shares have about 18% upside potential, and the stock also has an attractive forward P/E ratio of about 4.77, by far the least of the group. Other attractive stocks that could reach new highs include homebuilder Pultegroup and insurance company Allstate .

Here’s where the jobs are for May 2024 — in one chart

The three sectors, respectively, added 68,000, 43,000 and 42,000 jobs, similar to trends seen over the past year. The U.S. economy added 272,000 jobs for the month , coming out significantly higher than the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 190,000. Job growth in May was surprisingly strong, pushing back on lingering fears of a broader economic slowdown and likely slowing the Federal Reserve's rate-cutting timeline. On the other hand, social assistance employment trended higher as it added 15,000 last month, below the sector's average of 22,000 jobs per month seen over the last year. Investors walked away from the report discouraged that the Federal Reserve would cut rates in June, noting that the increase in job growth and above-average wage growth paints a picture of a fairly strong consumer.
