Sweden is asking its military to explore the prospects of sending Ukraine its Gripen fighter jets. But there won't be any transfer until Stockholm joins NATO, its defense minister said. Citing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and neighboring Finland first announced their intentions to join NATO over a year ago, breaking away from decades of neutrality. The Gripen was designed to take on Russian fighter jets and features electronic-warfare capabilities built to counter the radars in Moscow's aircraft and ground-based air-defense systems. Even if Sweden decides to send Gripens to Ukraine, it would be many months before they actually reach the battlefield.

But he reiterated that Sweden would for domestic security reasons need to become member of NATO before it would be able to potentially spare any fighter jets. The new military aid package will be Sweden's 14th to Ukraine since Russia's invasion, taking the total value of the Nordic country's such aid to just over 22 billion crowns. SYDNEY, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Residents of towns in the Australian state of Victoria were on Thursday warned it was still unsafe to return home, as flash floods followed bushfires that also forced people to flee. People in several towns along the Macalister River in the southeastern state were told to evacuate late on Wednesday after waters rose to dangerously high levels. Rains eased on Thursday, though disaster management officials said large amounts of water still needed to be flushed through the river systems. "The good news is (there is) no more serious rain expected," he told state broadcaster ABC. Emergency warnings urging evacuated residents not to return remain in place for several towns in the area.

Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told parliament that there may be a link between New Delhi and the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June in British Columbia. Holding posters of Nijjar, the protesters outside the holiest of Sikh shrines shouted slogans asking New Delhi to stop extrajudicial operations against separatists seeking Punjab as an independent state. The biggest winner from Monday's poll was Winston Peters and his populist New Zealand First party, which crossed the 5% threshold required to elect lawmakers from the centralised list. The union alliance and Chevron accepted proposals on pay and conditions from the country's industrial arbitrator for the Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG facilities, and workers suspended strikes that began two weeks ago. "The Offshore Alliance will now work with Chevron to finalise the drafting of the agreement and members will soon cease current industrial action," Offshore Alliance spokesperson Brad Gandy said in a statement. YEARS-LONG CAMPAIGNThe deal caps a years-long campaign by the Offshore Alliance for higher pay and better conditions at major Western Australian LNG sites. A 2022 agreement with Japan's Inpex at its Ichthys LNG operation set a benchmark for subsequent talks with Shell, Woodside and Chevron.

The agreement would resolve a wage fight that has roiled global gas markets since early August, amid fears strikes would disrupt output from Chevron's Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG projects that produce around 7% of the world's LNG supply. On Thursday, the Fair Work Commission (FWC), which has the power to impose a settlement, said it "strongly recommended" parties accept its proposals to end work stoppages. Chevron accepted arbitration terms late on Thursday to resolve all outstanding issues and finalise the agreements with the unions. No LNG shipments were disrupted by the industrial action, even after a fault at the Wheatstone plant.

The commission's recommendations came a day after talks between Chevron and a union alliance over strikes at the Wheatstone and Gorgon facilities ended without a deal. "I strongly recommend that the parties adopt the recommendations ... which will hopefully resolve these disputes," FWC Commissioner Bernie Riordan said. The tribunal has the power to halt the strikes, which escalated to two 24-hour work stoppages over the weekend. Riordan said both Chevron and the unions "spent countless hours at the negotiating table" and the talks resulted in an agreement on the majority of provisions.

After credits and other costs, the upfront price of Tesla's Model Y is only about $100 more than the Audi Q5. At $29,135, the 2023 Leaf has a higher sticker price than the 2023 Sentra, which goes for $21,295, according to Edmunds. However, it would take nearly 12 years to make up the $10,000 difference in upfront costs when compared with the Sentra. Overall, that works out to an upfront cost of $49,130 — $4,335 more than the 330i. With annual cost savings of $1,675, Model 3 owners would cover the upfront price difference in just over two and a half years.

Talks between Chevron and the workers' unions broke down last week without a deal, and the industrial action is scheduled to escalate to two weeks of 24-hour stoppages on Thursday. Chevron would have to demonstrate a sustained attempt to negotiate with unions for the tribunal to rule in its favour, he added. Strikes could actually demonstrate workers were so committed to bargaining that they were willing to stop work and forgo wages, she added. "Strike action is a legitimate form of action, workers have the right to do this," she said. Helena, 58, has $145,000 in student debt that she's struggling to pay off. Since she could not afford to finance her programs out of pocket, she took out about $80,000 in student loans for her bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology, the latter of which she earned in 2009. Because of her minimal income, she could not afford to pay off any of her student loans for a period, and interest accrued. Interest on student loans began accruing again last week, and borrowers' first bills are due in October. One 70-year-old borrower said in 2021: "When student loans took over my life, I stopped looking forward to anything.

Charlie Siringo (right) crosses the Rio Grande on horseback. Photo: Courtesy of Nathan WardA close friend of mine—a fellow historian and avid outdoorsman—likes to joke that while I merely write about the American West, he has actually lived it, crisscrossing the region’s hiking trails, bike paths and ski slopes. My pal might thus admire Charlie Siringo, who did both: He worked as a cowboy and as a detective for the Pinkerton Agency and then published books about his adventures. In “Son of the Old West,” writer Nathan Ward tracks Siringo from Texas to Idaho and seemingly everywhere in between while relating his encounters with an array of characters, some of them among the most famous of his day. As Mr. Ward explains, his book is as much a chronicle of the Old West as it is the study of a colorful, and ubiquitous, frontiersman.

On Broadway, Off Broadway, in special events and out of town, living authors are collaborating with dead ones. Some otherwise viable shows, like “Annie Get Your Gun,” need surgery because their racial or gender assumptions are now unacceptable. Others, like “Show Boat,” are merely falling out of copyright, with heirs eager to find a way to remonetize their property. And some — well one — are “Here We Are,” the musical Stephen Sondheim was working on when he died in November 2021.
