These regional powers are betting they can build an expendable air force without the massive costs of aircraft carriers, fighter jets and pilots trained to fly them. Naval experts agree that drone ships represent new possibilities while pointing out that these ships fall far short of the aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships that top navies sail. Turkey developed the Bayraktar TB3 naval drone for the Anadolu and claims the unmanned Kizilelma fighter jet it is developing could also operate from it. Although far from the might and versatility of flattops, these vessels enhance Turkey and Iran's respective capabilities to project naval power. These drone-carriers also have inherent shortcomings when compared to aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships in other navies.

China halts foreign adoptions of its children

BEIJING — The Chinese government is no longer allowing foreign adoptions of the country’s children, a spokesperson said Thursday. The only exception will be for blood relatives adopting a child or a stepchild, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said. Many foreigners have adopted children from China over the decades, visiting the country to pick them up and then bringing them to a new home overseas. China suspended international adoptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government later resumed adoptions for children who had received travel authorization before the suspension in 2020, the U.S. State Department said in its latest annual report on adoptions.

London CNN —Foreign automakers have dominated China’s car market for decades, selling millions of vehicles and raking in enormous profits. Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) are also among firms seeing sales and market share vanish in China as local consumers spurn overseas brands to buy Chinese instead. The American automaker’s sales in China have halved from a peak of above 4 million in 2017 to 2.1 million last year. Last year, BYD sold a record 3.02 million vehicles globally, including plug-in hybrids, up 62% from 2022. Months later, Stellantis (STLA), which makes Citroen, Fiat, and Peugeot cars, bought a 20% stake in Chinese EV maker Leapmotor for about €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion).

Can the G.O.P. Really Become the Party of Workers?

The most surprising moment of this year’s Republican National Convention may have come on its first night, when the president of the Teamsters railed in prime time against corporate elites and denounced a “war against labor” by business groups. The gasps from some in the hall were almost audible on television. But in many ways, it was a little-noted speech the week before, by Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri, that was more revealing about the party’s evolving relationship with organized labor. If anything, Mr. Hawley, a rising Republican star who is one of the Senate’s most conservative members, seemed to outflank the Teamsters’ leader. His speech, delivered at the National Conservatism Conference, criticized Republicans who “cheerleaded for corporate tax cuts and low barriers for corporate trade, then watched these same corporations ship American jobs overseas.” Mr. Hawley concluded that, “in the choice between labor and capital,” his party must “start prioritizing the workingman.”

CNN —A United States citizen has been detained in Turkey on suspicion of murdering a Russian woman in the Moscow region, Russian state media reported Friday. The US State Department was “seeking additional information,” a spokesperson said, after Russian state media TASS reported the suspect was American, citing law enforcement sources. The body of a 30-year-old woman was found with multiple stab wounds on the staircase of an apartment building on Thursday in Odintsovo, a city of the outskirts of the capital, according to the Russian Investigative Committee for the Moscow region. The Russian Investigative Committee has not named the suspect but said discussions were ongoing into the “possibility” of bringing the person to Russia for further “investigative actions.”CNN cannot independently verify the reports. “The US Department of State and our embassies and consulates abroad have no greater priority than the safety and security of US citizens overseas,” the State Department spokesperson said.

For investors holding Japanese assets denominated in yen, the decline of the currency led to the value of their gains increasing. McManus isn't the only one who increased his exposure into the Japanese market following the early August sell-off. Before the yen started to strengthen, "Japanese investors could benefit because their lives and portfolios are denominated in yen. As a result, an appreciating yen will help overseas investors realize gains from the Japanese market as it continues its rebound. "This suggests that, if the cycle is heading towards [a] period of persistent yen strength, global investors should overweight Japan," Jefferies said.

But the consequences — but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious. Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails, and how he would use the immense powers of the presidency of the United States. But Donald Trump believes a border deal would hurt his campaign, so he ordered his allies in Congress to kill the deal. Because, you know, they know — they know he is easy to manipulate with flattery and favors. They know Trump won’t hold autocrats accountable because he wants to be an autocrat himself.

As end-of-summer travel lines back up at TSA airport checkpoints in the U.S., one overseas airport is going all-in on a biometric passenger experience. The Smart Travel Project at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi will involve biometric sensors at every airport identification checkpoint by 2025. Airport security and travel experts have generally cheered the move. "Facial recognition is the future, and we will start to get intelligent with airport security and focus on the traveler rather than the items they bring. Among the concerns expressed are what type of data someone would need to give during the biometric enrollment process, and whether biometric security processes will be used to track movements throughout the airport, or if biometric data will be used outside the airport.

Three officials from different countries said the measured response comes as they are mindful of what happened after Maduro’s 2018 reelection. Then, the vote was quickly condemned as a sham and led to the most severe sanctions yet on the OPEC nation. In Washington, which under Republican President Donald Trump blocked Venezuela’s critical oil exports, there seems little appetite for more severe sanctions. The European Union last week said there was not enough evidence to support Maduro’s victory as announced by the CNE. It’s a serene sight — except for the one thing Mr. Antezana, a retired oceanographer, cannot ignore. The South American country is the top exporter of farmed salmon to the United States. For more than four decades, Mr. Antezana has watched the industry grow into one of the world’s leading producers of farmed salmon. Last year, farmed salmon was Chile’s second-largest export, generating $6.5 billion in revenue. Most of the farmed salmon eaten in the United States comes from overseas, with almost half from the fjords of Chile.

Adani Group companies shed as much as $19 billion in market value on Monday after Hindenburg Research accused the Indian market regulator probing the group of having links to offshore funds also used by Adani. Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports were among the biggest losers on India’s blue-chip Nifty 50 index. Total losses in Adani companies narrowed to $9 billion after the early plunge. I traded for a hedge fund and served as senior technical analyst for an foreign exchange company during the great financial crisis of 2008 that saw a severe yen carry unwind. If the line is headed south the dollar is weakening relative to the yen, and the yen is strengthening relative to the dollar. I believe that the July 11th CPI print that came 0.1% below expectations was the culprit to this whole yen carry unwind. Could this yen carry unwind move further?
