"But in the absence of that sorely-needed action, the Office of Gun Violence Prevention along with the rest of my Administration will continue to do everything it can to combat the epidemic of gun violence that is tearing our families, our communities, and our country apart,” he said. Democrats largely favor stricter gun laws as a way to reduce deaths from gun violence at schools and in cities across the country. Establishing a new office of gun violence prevention has long been on the wish list of anti-violence advocacy groups that were happy with Biden's record pushing for reforms but wanted the White House do more. White House adviser Stefanie Feldman, Biden's staff secretary, will serve as the director of the office, and gun safety advocates Greg Jackson and Rob Wilcox will join the White House as deputies. “We are so pleased that the Biden administration has officially created an Office of Gun Violence Prevention," said Kris Brown, president of Brady, an advocacy group.

China says opposes discriminatory U.S. practices against firms

BEIJING, Sept 20 (Reuters) - China opposes discriminatory practices by the United States against Chinese companies, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday, after the U.S. commerce department said an advanced phone chip made by Huawei may violate trade restrictions. Smartphone manufacturer Huawei recently started selling its Mate 60 Pro phone containing a chip that analysts believe was made with a technology breakthrough by Chinese chip foundry Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) (0981.HK). In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China "opposed the U.S. generalising the concept of national security". "Such discriminatory and unfair practices against Chinese companies undermine the principles of free trade and international economic and trade rules, and disrupt the stability of the global production and supply chain," she added. China and the United States are locked in an ongoing battle over semiconductor technology.

The IPO gave Instacart a valuation of nearly $9.9 billion, a fraction of the $39 billion it was worth in 2021, the company's last funding round. Reuters GraphicsSeveral startups' valuations have shrunk since 2022 as inflation, geopolitical tensions and the Federal Reserve's rapid rate hikes soured the economic climate. But a lukewarm reception to Neumora Therapeutics' (NMRA.O) IPO last week hinted at limited investor enthusiasm for new listings. China on Wednesday upgraded relations with Venezuela to an "all-weather strategic partnership", typically reserved for a select few nations. Maduro said Venezuela supports China's Belt and Road Initiative to boost trade infrastructure, Chinese media said, referring to a related conference in China next month. China has said it has Belt and Road cooperation agreements with more than 150 countries and over 30 international organisations. China said it is willing to support construction of special economic zones in Venezuela and both countries agreed to further develop bilateral trade and "enrich the variety of trade goods". "China has not issued laws, regulations or policy documents that prohibit the purchase and use of foreign brand phones such as Apple's," foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a regular press briefing when asked about the reports. The Chinese government attaches great importance to information and cyber security and treats both domestic and foreign companies as equals," she added. Mao said China hoped all mobile phone companies would strictly abide its laws and regulations, as well as "strengthen information security management".
