But TikTok users — many of whom speculated the rug was evidence of a larger crime — expressed disappointment on Friday when the woman, who goes by Katie Santry on TikTok, revealed that the rug she uncovered didn’t contain a body. In comments, TikTok users offered their own theories on what they described as “rug gate” — advising Santry to contact lawyers and psychics and asking Santry about her neighbors. Some also speculated that missing people from Columbus-area cold cases could be buried in the rug. TikTok comments encouraged Santry to contact the police, who initially told her to try digging up the rug herself, she said. “There were no bones, there was no body, it was just a rug … This should be a sigh of relief.

In reality, a federal judge, not Smith, made the decision to release that filing to the public. After hearing opposition from Trump's team about the redactions Smith's team suggested, Chutkan reviewed the brief and ultimately decided that the redactions were appropriate. Chuck Rosenberg, a Justice Department veteran and NBC News legal analyst, said Smith's team was doing things by the book. People have died after drinking tea brewed from unwashed poppy seeds. Members of the House of Representatives and Senate have proposed legislation “to prohibit the distribution and sale of contaminated poppy seeds in order to prevent harm, addiction, and further deaths from morphine-contaminated poppy seeds.” The bill was one of several on the agenda for a September 10 House hearing. On the other hand, tea made from large quantities of unwashed poppy seeds could lead to addiction and overdose, doctors said. The US Drug Enforcement Administration said unwashed poppy seeds can kill when used alone or in combination with other drugs. The US Department of Justice has brought criminal prosecutions over the sale of unwashed poppy seeds.

The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a review and evaluation of the 1921 race massacre in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said. “When we have finished our federal review, we will issue a report analyzing the massacre in light of both modern and then-existing civil rights law,” said Clarke, who oversees the Justice Department’s civil rights enforcement efforts. The review will be conducted under the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act, which allows the Department of Justice to investigate death-resulting civil rights crimes that occurred on or before Dec. 31, 1979. The massacre started after a Black man was accused of assaulting a white woman. “Although a commission, historians, lawyers and others have conducted prior examinations of the Tulsa Massacre, we, the Justice Department, never have.”Clarke said the department is examining available documents, witness accounts, scholarly and historical research and other information related to the massacre.

In Detroit as in the rest of the U.S., the violent crime rate has dropped and is near historic lows. Last month, new FBI numbers showed that murder declined 11.6% in 2023, the largest single year drop on record. But Trump and his allies have also cherrypicked statistics and falsely told supporters that FBI crime data can’t be believed. Crime data skeptics also have attributed declining crime numbers to “woke prosecutors” who are failing to file charges. But Trump uses these low 2020 and 2021 victim survey numbers, despite the doubts cast on them, to argue that violent crime has spiked significantly during the Biden-Harris administration.

Ireland's government on Tuesday outlined how it intends to spend 13 billion euros ($14.4 billion) in Apple back taxes — a windfall that Dublin actually spent several years fighting to avoid. His comments come three weeks after the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled against Apple over its tax affairs in Ireland. The landmark decision, which the court said was final, said Apple must pay Ireland billions of euros in back taxes. The ECJ's ruling was welcomed by tax justice advocates, as well as the bloc's outgoing competition chief Margrethe Vestager, who described the pronouncement as a "huge win" for European citizens. Apple said at the time that it was disappointed with the decision, while the Irish government said that its position had always been that it "does not give preferential tax treatment to any companies or taxpayers."

If Trump wins the election, he will have the power to order the Department of Justice to dismiss the criminal case against him. Amazon won partial dismissal of an FTC lawsuit alleging illegal monopoly practices. AdvertisementAmazon just won a partial dismissal of a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit that accused it of operating an illegal monopoly. In September 2023, the FTC sued Amazon for stifling competition by punishing vendors who sell their items cheaper on rival platforms and for forcing sellers to use Amazon's own fulfillment service. On Monday, a federal judge in Seattle partially granted Amazon's earlier motion to dismiss the case, Reuters reported, citing court records. Last year, the agency sued Amazon in another case, saying it lured unwitting customers into Prime subscriptions and created a "labyrinthine" process to cancel it.
