New York CNN —Retail software provider CDK Global says it will likely take several days for its software to be back online and operational, as the company grapples with a system outage that has paralyzed nearly 15,000 car dealerships across North America since Wednesday. The data provider’s software, which dealerships use to manage everything from scheduling to records, said Saturday it has begun restoring its software. Car manufacturer Ford told CNN it is working with dealers to set up alternative software systems and other workarounds. Several dealerships on the East Coast told CNN on Sunday they are manually filling out forms to process sales. One used car dealership told CNN it has been filing paperwork by hand and sending runners to the car registry with the paperwork.

Heat Wave Enters 7th Day, but the End Is in Sight
  + stars: | 2024-06-23 | by ( Kate Selig | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The end of the unusually early heat wave that gripped much of the United States over the past seven days is in sight. But first, the country will need to endure another day, possibly two, of scorching hot temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic States and along the I-95 urban corridor on the East Coast. The National Weather Service predicts that the heat wave, which has more than 100 million people under heat advisory alerts, will last through early this upcoming week. The Mid-Atlantic States and cities along the I-95 urban corridor, from Washington, D.C., to New York, will continue to simmer through Sunday. Heat advisories have been issued for areas east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where the heat index — a measure of how the heat feels with humidity taken into account — is forecast to range between 100 and 108 degrees.

Recent headlines suggest that our nation’s business leaders are embracing the presidential candidate Donald Trump. His campaign would have you believe that our nation’s top chief executives are returning to support Mr. Trump for president, touting declarations of support from some prominent financiers like Steve Schwarzman and David Sacks. Mr. Trump continues to suffer from the lowest level of corporate support in the history of the Republican Party. I know this because I have worked with roughly 1,000 chief executives a year, running a school for them, which I started 35 years ago, and I speak with business leaders almost every day. The reality is that the top corporate leaders working today, like many Americans, aren’t entirely comfortable with either Mr. Trump or President Biden.

Then Apple’s “By the Seaside” alarm sound went off. Moktan chose the jaunty, cheerful tune available as a ringtone and alarm on many of Apple’s devices, thinking that the song’s easygoing melody would make waking up a peaceful experience. Gyaltsen Moktan, a 26-year-old English teacher in Tokyo, says that "By the Seaside" reminds him of horror movie music. Courtesy Gyaltsen Moktan“By the Seaside” is perhaps Apple’s most polarizing alarm and ringtone, evoking comparisons to nails on a chalkboard, the word “moist” and screaming children on a plane. Boston Flake, a 15-year-old high school student in Utah, is in a love-hate relationship with the controversial alarm tune.

Two years ago, when the Supreme Court decided New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, it created a jurisprudential mess that scrambled American gun laws. On Friday, not only did the cleanup begin, but the Supreme Court cleared the way for one of the most promising legal innovations for preventing gun violence: red flag laws. Before Bruen, lower courts had struggled to establish a uniform legal test for evaluating gun restrictions, and the Supreme Court hadn’t provided any clarity. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority opinion in a 6-to-3 decision split along ideological lines. Under a fair reading of Thomas’s opinion, lower courts would be hard pressed to uphold any gun restriction unless you could point to an obvious historical match.

The groups aren’t officially affiliated with Trump’s campaign and have at times gotten crosswise with Trump’s political advisers. Several of the outside groups designed to advance Trump’s policy goals are doubling as a clearinghouse for potential second-term job candidates. Their operations are led by former Trump White House aides who were instrumental in efforts to weed out officials who disagreed with Trump toward the end of his first term. Still, conversations about a possible drift toward Donald Trump, though, are evident in the several Jewish elected Democratic leaders who grimaced and ducked when asked by CNN to discuss their sense of Jewish support for Biden. Talking with Jewish voters in Michigan, “I’ve had a couple of people say point blank, ‘How could any Jew vote for a Democrat?’” said Troy Zukowski, the West Michigan chair of the Michigan Jewish Democrats. The president does have some key Jewish voices of support in important places. Trump’s support among Jewish voters in 2020, at 30% according to Associated Press exit polls, was the highest for a Republican presidential candidate in decades. The expected central theme of that effort, according to one of the people involved, will be: As a Jewish American, do you feel safer than you did four years ago?

Nearly two years ago, I huddled with some co-workers over a phone watching a video Celine Dion had shared on Instagram. “I miss you all so much.” This was Ms. Dion as we’d never seen her — fragile, tentative, worried — and all of us watching got a little emotional. This week, Ms. Dion will premiere “I Am: Celine Dion,” a documentary about her life since that diagnosis. Ms. Dion, 56, released her first album in 1981 at age 13, and she’s come to stand as one of the last pillars of a dwindling category: the pop divas. In the opera world, being labeled a diva can come with sexist overtones, a shorthand for a famous woman who makes unreasonable demands.

In Brooklyn, a State Assembly race has attracted the involvement of marquee figures like Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic leader, and Letitia James, the New York State attorney general. In East Harlem, race and ethnicity have cast shadows over another contest, with the question of whether the neighborhood should be represented by a Latino. And in Westchester County, a Democratic primary fight has included ugly accusations of lies, betrayal and purloined emails. If there was any illusion that Democrats in New York would play nice until November’s all-important general election, these contests for the Assembly in Tuesday’s primaries suggest otherwise. At the heart of many of these contests lies a long-simmering tension between institutional and progressive Democrats that has come to dominate many debates inside the State Legislature, including those involving housing and criminal justice.

I have heard from many young Jews around America newly awakened to their Judaism. These young Jews have different backgrounds and political views, but they share the life-altering experience of deep disillusionment with previous professional or social homes. Young American Jews today are realizing that they, too, can be made to feel unwanted in their own homes. But for most of us American Jews, Zionism is the belief that Jews have a right to self-determination in their historical homeland.

Parts of New England and the Northeast were under an unusual risk for tornadoes on Sunday as severe thunderstorms were expected to strike the region, forecasters said. The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch early Sunday afternoon for Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, northeastern New York and western Maine. More than 8 million people were under the watch, which signals that conditions could lead to severe storms or tornadoes. The watch is in effect until 8 p.m. The National Weather Service office in Albany, N.Y., warned of an enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon and evening, and said such a risk was “more rare” for that part of the country.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. When Biden and Trump meet in a debate on CNN Thursday, expect part of the audience to be wondering exactly who and what will come next. Biden, who’s battling low approval ratings, is sticking with Vice President Kamala Harris, whose polls are also bleak. There were 28, and we’ve had 11 so far this year, Bridget Johnson noted in the first of a CNN Opinion series about America’s preparedness. “It’s a measure of his hold on American society that he’s still revered a half-century later,” wrote Frederic J.
