Fifty-seven percent of US adults surveyed told Pew they tip 15% or less for an average sit-down meal. By the latter part of the 20th century, a typical restaurant tip was 15%. The public is more likely to oppose than favor suggested tip amounts on screens. Forty percent of people oppose businesses suggesting tip amounts to their customers on screens.

As part of the bankruptcy plan, Rite Aid appointed a new CEO, Jeff Stein, who will also serve as the head of restructuring and a board member. Now Best Buy will stop selling DVDs and Blu-ray discs at the end of the 2023 holiday season, too. Best Buy says that streaming has made DVDs obsolete and it can use physical space in its stores and warehouses for tech products in higher demand. “To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is much different today than it was decades ago,” Best Buy said in a statement. Best Buy does not break out its sales from DVDs, but Best Buy currently has 24,000 DVDs listed on its website. Best Buy’s exit from the market will leave Walmart, Amazon and Target as the top retailers stocking DVDs, according to Digital Bits.

The lawsuits against the US Navy and West Point suggest that opponents of affirmative action are serious about eliminating any policy of diversity based on race. It’s not surprising that the US Armed Forces have drawn criticism from affirmative action foes. But the decline in US auto jobs and the erosion of unions have hit Black workers hardest. Black workers are likelier to belong to unions, in any industry, compared to White and Hispanic workers. Black union workers earn on average 16.4% higher wages than non-union Black workers, and they are likelier to have health care and retirement benefits, studies show. Legacy automakers are pivoting to electric vehicles in response to expected strong consumer demand, tougher environmental regulations both from US states and foreign countries, and a push from Wall Street. Electric vehicles have outpaced growth of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars in recent years. But automakers bucked Trump and agreed to meet tougher standards set by California rather than the Trump administration’s rules. At a Detroit battery plant Wednesday, Trump said America didn’t need what the factory produced“This plant, we just walked through this plant and the electric vehicles are gonna put [automakers] out of business,” Trump said. Trump’s proposals could undermine US companies’ EV investments and hand over control of an increasingly EV future to foreign manufacturers.

New York CNN —Looming over the United Auto Workers strike: Automakers’ continued migration to the anti-union South. Jobs at nonunion EV battery facilities pay less than the roughly $32 an hour that veteran UAW workers make. Since 1990, the South’s share of auto jobs has doubled from around 15% to 30% today, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Mostly nonunion EV jobs and manufacturing investments are surging in Southern states led by Republicans. The South has picked up 66% of planned EV jobs, while projects in Midwestern states such as Michigan, Indiana, Kansas and Ohio have combined for 26% of planned jobs, according to S&P Global.

The workers, members of the tiny United Automobile Workers union founded just a year prior, sought to improve brutal working conditions at mighty General Motors, the world’s largest manufacturer. The UAW’s sit-down strike across GM plants lasted 44 days. The 44-day strike birthed the United Auto Workers union. The UAW is calling its new strategy a “stand up strike,” a reference to the sit-down strike that started 87 years ago, and has launched targeted strikes at selected plants. The sit-down strike also prompted unionization and a wave of strikes in other industries.

Decades ago, airlines used to board first class and use an open boarding process for the main cabin. A better boarding processAirlines have been experimenting with different boarding schemes to try to speed up the process. Jason Steffen, a University of Nevada, Las Vegas physics professor developed a boarding method that boards passengers in rows of two. Southwest Airlines has the fastest boarding process of any major airline by simply allowing people to claim the first available seat.
