Independent Franchise Partners told the Journal that a straight equity exchange between Fox and News Corp would dilute and delay the realization of News Corp's substantial intrinsic value. The firm wouldn't oppose a recombination so long as it was done in a way that would see News Corp shares valued at more than $30. However, it believes the only way to realize that share price is to sell parts of News Corp, which was trading at around $18 on Wednesday. This is not the first non-Murdoch shareholder to push back on the proposed deal. Earlier this week, Irenic Capital Management said it sent a letter to the special committee saying Fox didn't serve News Corp's strategic goals, and, like Independent Franchise, believes News Corp shares are undervalued.

BUFFALO, N.Y., Nov 17 (Reuters) - Up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) of lake-effect snow could bury parts of Western New York and other states by the end of the weekend, forecasters said on Thursday, paralyzing the city of Buffalo and other areas downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The heaviest totals are likely in Buffalo, the weather service said on its website, stressing it was difficult to predict exactly where the snow bands would develop. "What we are talking about is a major, major storm," New York Governor Kathy Hochul, said on Thursday, a day after she declared a state of emergency in the Buffalo area. By Thursday morning, snow squalls already carpeted parts of New York southeast of Lake Erie with 10 inches of snow. An Asian American scientist who was wrongfully accused of spying for China is speaking out after reaching a lucrative settlement with the U.S. government last week. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, which backed Chen, the hydrologist will receive $550,000 from the Commerce Department and an annuity over 10 years valued at $1.25 million. Neither the Commerce Department nor the DOJ commented further on Chen’s ordeal. However, the Commerce Department appealed the decision and placed her on administrative leave. As part of the settlement, Chen is retiring from the NWS, her lawyers said.

The reason East Coast atmospheric rivers aren't talked about much isn't because they are rare. The West gets about half that number of atmospheric rivers each year, yet they account for double the annual rainfall percentage.
