COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A frustrated Dabo Swinney defended his Clemson career to a radio caller who questioned his performance as one of college football's highest-paid coaches. The Tigers entered the season as favorites to win the Atlantic Coast Conference title after winning their eighth since 2011 under Swinney. “We are at a point now where if you don’t go undefeated, ‘you are losers and you’re terrible’ and that is just such a terrible mindset,” Swinney said then. Clemson went on to lose its next two games at Miami, 28-20 in overtime on Oct. 21 and at North Carolina State, 24-17, on Saturday. It's the first time Clemson has lost four games in a season since 2010, when it went 6-7 in Swinney's second full season.

A weeklong hearing on one lawsuit to bar Trump from the ballot in Colorado begins Monday, while on Thursday oral arguments are scheduled before the Minnesota Supreme Court on an effort to kick the former president off the ballot in that state. Whether the judges keep Trump on the ballot or boot him, their rulings are likely to be swiftly appealed, eventually to the U.S. Supreme Court. Then last year, it was used by CREW to bar the head of “Cowboys for Trump” from a county commission seat in rural New Mexico. The judge overseeing Greene’s case ruled in her favor, while Cawthorn’s case became moot after he was defeated in his primary. Free Speech For People filed the case in Minnesota, where challenges to ballot appearances go straight to the state supreme court.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump isn’t used to constraints. Trump is not only a former president, but also the leading candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Just days ago, he was fined $5,000 for violating the same gag order, which Engoron imposed after Trump targeted his principal law clerk on social media. Indeed, things are likely to get much more complicated for Trump in the coming months as his four criminal trials get underway. The scheduled Fed board meeting will mark the first time in over a decade that the central bank has proposed revising the fees, which generated around $24.31 billion for lenders in 2019, the most recent Fed data shows. The Fed has not said how it plans to change the fees, which have long been criticized by retailers as disproportionately high, and a spokesman for the central bank declined to comment. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the Fed will lower the caps, sending shares in credit card companies Visa V.N and Mastercard MA.N lower. In 2011 the central bank capped them at 21 cents per transaction, plus 0.05% of the transaction cost. Analysts said that it is likely the Fed could face a legal challenge from either industry if it pursues new caps.

MAYWOOD, Ill. (AP) — Former NFL player Sergio Brown, charged with killing his mother, bought a one-way ticket to Cancun, Mexico, after being the last person seen with the woman before her slaying last month, a prosecutor said Wednesday. Brown, who faces charges of first-degree murder and concealing a homicide, appeared in court for a detention hearing Wednesday before Cook County Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez, who denied him pretrial release. The body of his mother, Myrtle Brown, was discovered Sept. 16 near a creek in Maywood, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of Chicago. Brown, 35, and his 73-year-old mother lived together in Maywood. The cellphones of Brown and his mother showed they were near the same location at the estimated time of her death, Villarreal said.

WASHINGTON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - U.S. regulators will begin grading banks on which communities and geographies they service via online lending under tougher new rules modernizing fair lending standards to be finalized on Tuesday. The changes to 1977 Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) regulations draw a line under a contentious multiyear effort that was delayed amid fierce lobbying by community groups and lenders, as well as by a change of presidential administrations. Conceived to prevent red lining, CRA regulations are central to banks' overall supervisory performance. Historically, CRA grades focused on how well banks serviced low-income communities where banks have branches. Banks on Tuesday said they supported fair lending but flagged concerns with the final rule.

It is unlikely that dengue will become a serious problem in the United States, “as long as people keeping living like they’re living now,” said Thomas W. Scott, a dengue epidemiologist and professor emeritus at University of California, Davis. Outside Puerto Rico and other territories where the disease is endemic, there are about 550 dengue cases each year in the United States, but they are imported by travelers who were infected abroad and passed the disease along to their close contacts. The case in Pasadena is a rare locally acquired case of dengue in the United States. But scientists say dengue will continue to spread to places that haven’t experienced it before. “But I think the general expectation that this is going to be a growing problem in the United States is reasonable.”

WASHINGTON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - The chance for persistent inflation to keep interest rates higher and potential losses in the commercial real estate market are among the top concerns of respondents to a Federal Reserve survey on financial stability, the U.S. central bank said on Friday. The regulators are similarly extending the window for a separate proposal that would raise a capital surcharge for the largest global banks. Firms have warned the proposal if finalized could force them to curtail lending, curb product offerings, and lead to economic harm. The IMF adjusted this year's stress test to probe the impact of its baseline economic scenario of higher interest rates for longer, as well as the possibility of consumers yanking deposits. "Under the baseline, it's about 5% of banks that are relatively weak in terms of their capital. And in severe stress, that number goes up to 30% or sometimes higher," Adrian said. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/ Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve's top regulatory official defended a sweeping proposal to overhaul bank capital rules before the country's largest bank lobby on Monday, arguing the benefits of a bigger cushion outweigh any additional costs banks might face. The proposal implements international capital standards agreed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision in the aftermath of the 2007-2009 financial crisis. Barr's Monday speech, which is his first on bank regulation since the proposal came out, served as a broad-based defense of the effort. "The private costs of capital must be weighed against the social benefits of higher capital in creating a healthier, more resilient financial system," he said, according to prepared remarks. Barr also pushed back against the industry's refrain that higher capital costs for banks will mean curtailed lending and potential economic harm.
