Judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rule on emergency measures against Israel following accusations by South Africa that the Israeli military operation in Gaza is a state-led genocide, in The Hague, Netherlands, January 26, 2024. The United Nations' highest court said on Friday that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and settlements there are illegal and should be withdrawn as soon as possible, in its strongest findings to date on the Israel-Palestinian conflict. The advisory opinion by judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), known as the World Court, was not binding but carries weight under international law and may weaken support for Israel. The court said Israel's obligations include paying restitution for harm and "the evacuation of all settlers from existing settlements". "The Jewish nation cannot be an occupier in its own land," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

And to him, AI doesn't exhibit the signs of a truly groundbreaking innovation like the ones he's seen before. AdvertisementAI comes with a trillion-dollar price tagIt's no secret that AI technology isn't cheap. Advertisement"A lot of people say, 'Well, we'll be able to replace call centers with AI,'" Covello said. However, once it encounters unfamiliar situations outside its training set, AI doesn't have the ability to reason like humans do. If AI doesn't actually have the ability to conduct higher-order reasoning, it won't leave a trillion-dollar impact on the economy.

From Manila to the Netherlands to New Jersey, critical businesses and services were brought to a standstill on Friday by a global tech outage. The disruption was caused by a flawed software update from a cybersecurity company that operates behind the scenes for many businesses. But the impact was visceral, creating chaotic scenes at airports, grocery stores, subway stations and elsewhere. Here are scenes from around the world on Friday. Even as some systems were restored, the outages are likely to have ripples effects that will not be quickly overcome.

CNN —The United Nations’ top court said Friday that Israel’s presence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem is illegal, in an unprecedented opinion that called on Israel to end its decades-long occupation of territories claimed by Palestinians for a future state. The Palestinians want the West Bank and Gaza for a future state, with East Jerusalem at its capital. ‘False decision’Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other politicians rejected the ICJ opinion. “The answer to The Hague – sovereignty now,” Smotrich said on X, a call for Israel to annex the West Bank. The ICJ in 2004 delivered an advisory opinion on the Israeli separation barrier around the majority of the West Bank, urging Israel to remove it from occupied land.

Some countries, like Taiwan, will gain as many as 50% more millionaires during that time. But the United Kingdom and the Netherlands make "notable exceptions" on this list, per UBS, because both are forecasted to lose millionaires. The UK's three million millionaires put it third among countries with the highest number of millionaires last year, as measured in US dollars, per UBS. AP —Relatives of passengers killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down over Ukraine gathered with officials at Australia’s Parliament House on Wednesday to mark the 10th anniversary of the tragedy that claimed 298 lives. So in that sense, I’m heartbroken that the conflict continues,” Paul Guard told Australian Broadcasting Corp (ABC). Relatives of MH17 passengers join officials at Australia's Parliament House in Canberra. The investigation concluded the missile was driven into Ukraine from a Russian military base near the city of Kursk and returned there after the plane was shot down. Putin said through an interpreter that Ukrainians were all fascists, had brought down MH17 themselves and that Ukraine had no right to exist, Abbott said.

Global chip stocks fell sharply, with ASML , Nvidia and TSMC posting declines amid reports of tighter export restrictions from the U.S. and a ramp-up of geopolitical tensions fueled by comments from former U.S. President Donald Trump. ASML's Netherlands-listed shares were down 11%, while Tokyo Electron shares in Japan closed nearly 7.5% lower. The moves came after Bloomberg on Wednesday reported that the Biden administration is considering a wide-sweeping rule to clamp down on companies exporting their critical chipmaking equipment to China. Washington's foreign direct product rule, or FDPR, allows the U.S. to put controls on foreign-made products even if they use the smallest amount of American technology. It's a juicy prize for winning a generative AI coding competition hosted by Inriver's owners, private equity firm Thomas H. Lee. It's one way the Boston-based buyout firm has been able to implement generative AI coding assistants among its portfolio of middle-market companies. The goal is to accelerate software development so that portfolio companies can do more work with the same amount of resources. He also persists that deploying generative AI coding assistants is not a cost exercise, but a means to productivity. Now, the key for the SRG is educating portfolio companies on what problems AI can fix and which it can't.

Elysian unveils fully electric 90-passenger plane

“You shouldn’t assume that an electric plane is going to look like the (most successful) planes of today,” de Vries says, adding that a common misconception is that electric planes should essentially be electrified versions of the lightest regional turboprops. What you end up with is a plane that in weight proportions, for example, looks much more like old 1960s jets. Israeli-founded Eviation has flight-tested its plane, called Alice – a fully electric nine-passenger commuter plane with a range of 250 nautical miles that the company aims to put into service in 2027. “There are over 5,000 aircraft in service today in the E9X’s size category of 70 to 100 seats,” he says. If Elysian can surmount the technology and infrastructure challenges, he adds, it will then face the commercial challenge of entering a fiercely competitive market.

Imagine a comprehensive review of research on a treatment for children found “remarkably weak evidence” that it was effective. Now imagine the medical establishment shrugged off the conclusions and continued providing the same unproven and life-altering treatment to its young patients. It’s been three months since the release of the Cass Review, an independent assessment of gender treatment for youths commissioned by England’s National Health Service. Nor, she said, is there clear evidence that transitioning kids decreases the likelihood that gender dysphoric youths will turn to suicide, as adherents of gender-affirming care claim. Read previewWestern-provided F-16 fighter jets are on their way to Ukraine and set to start flying missions later this summer. But they may not yet be enough to make a difference on the battlefield, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated in a discussion this week on what Ukraine needs, comparing the jets to the US-made Abrams tanks that Ukraine got last fall. "The problem with F-16," the Ukrainian president said, "is the number and the dates." The US sent only 31 M1A1 Abrams in total, and they were delivered to Ukraine months after British and German tanks. For comparison, Ukraine received about 300 US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, nearly ten times more than the number of Abrams sent.

Following a six-month effort by Steel Front and Ukrainian steel giant Metinvest, the three vessels and crew training for Ukrainian forces cost more than $4.1 million. It wasn't immediately clear what type of vessels were sent, but Finnish media speculated them to operate similarly to the Swedish CB-90.
