Britain’s Labour government said it was making “difficult decisions” concerning the budget, including cutting some road and rail projects and pension benefits, after accusing its predecessor, the Conservative Party, of leaving the country’s finances in a mess. Rachel Reeves, the chancellor of the Exchequer, said on Monday that there was a hole of 22 billion pounds (about $28 billion) in the country’s coffers this year because spending needs had exceeded expected revenue. Ms. Reeves accused the Conservative Party of making spending commitments on plans such as road repairs and building new hospitals “knowing the money wasn’t there.” Some of those plans would scrapped or reviewed. “The scale of this overspend is not sustainable,” Ms. Reeves told lawmakers in Parliament. She will present a full budget to lawmakers at the end of October.

The emails show Vance, who had yet to embark on his run for the Senate, writing to his classmate Sofia Nelson, a Detroit-based public defender. In them, Vance denounced the GOP's embrace of Trump, calling the former president a "morally reprehensible human being," and expressed disappointment with law enforcement after the killing of Michael Brown, a Black 18-year-old, in 2014. AdvertisementIn 2015, Vance wrote that he was "obviously outraged at Trump's rhetoric," comparing him to a demagogue "willing to exploit the people who believe crazy shit." He also wrote in 2016 that "the more white people feel like voting for trump, the more black people will suffer. In a text message to a different former Yale classmate in 2016, Vance wondered if Trump could be "America's Hitler."

But I was shocked when I was met with judgment for still being on my dad's phone plan. Each sales associate jokingly asked if I was on my family's phone plan, and I sheepishly admitted I was. So, they're happy to help me by letting me stay on the family phone plan and sharing their streaming services with me. As Senator JD Vance seeks the vice presidency, a former Yale Law School classmate and friend has shared about 90 of their emails and text messages, mostly from 2014 through 2017, with The New York Times. The emails add to an existing body of evidence showing how Mr. Vance pivoted from a strong opponent of former President Donald J. Trump to his running mate. They also provide an insight into a cultural willingness by Mr. Vance to accept his classmate, Sofia Nelson, who is transgender. Now, Nelson, who opposes the Trump-Vance ticket, hopes the emails will inform the opinion of voters about Mr. Vance. In response, a spokesman for the Vance campaign said in a statement that it was “unfortunate” for someone to share “decade-old private conversations between friends.”

As a standalone company, Solventum has been under-covered and misunderstood by the market. There is also no shortage of examples of Trian being a valuable corporate governance-oriented investor and creating tremendous shareholder value from the board level. While Trian has a history of being an active shareholder, the firm has also created tremendous shareholder value as an engaged director. When his book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” was published in 2016, JD Vance sent an email apologizing to a close friend from his Yale Law School days. The friend identified as transgender, but Mr. Vance referred to them in the book as a lesbian. “Hey Sofes, here’s an excerpt from my book,” Mr. Vance wrote to his friend, Sofia Nelson. “I hope you’re not offended, but if you are, I’m sorry! Love you, JD.”Nelson wrote back the same day, calling Mr. Vance “buddy” and thanking him for “being sweet,” adding, “If you had written gender queer radical pragmatist, nobody would know what you mean.” Nelson asked for an autographed copy, then signed off with, “Love, Sofia.”

CNN —The NASA Perseverance rover may have found a pivotal clue that’s central to its mission on Mars: geological evidence that could suggest life existed on the red planet billions of years ago. “These spots are a big surprise,” said David Flannery, member of the NASA Perseverance science team and an astrobiologist at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, in a statement. But the arrowhead-shaped specimen could help the Perseverance team unlock whether Mars was once a planet hospitable to life. Perseverance rover captured a 360-degree panorama of a region on Mars called “Bright Angel,” where a river flowed billions of years ago. Exploring Mars’ pastSince landing on Mars, Perseverance has crossed Jezero Crater and explored an ancient river delta in search of microfossils of past life.

Take activist hedge funds, which buy up a percentage of a company's stock (or an asset) and then use their weight to push for operational changes. Or there would be a fun, splashy war between the hedge fund and the C-suite. Hedge funds rely on outperforming the market when times are hard and it's easier to find pockets of outperformance and exploit them. Of course, hedge funds are having a hard time coming up with a crew because the clients have changed too. Across the world, critical businesses and services including airlines, hospitals, train networks and TV stations, are being disrupted by a global tech outage affecting Microsoft users. In many countries, flights have been grounded, workers couldn’t access their systems and, in some cases, customers haven’t been able to make card payments in stores. A series outages rippled across the globe as information displays, login systems and broadcasting networks went dark. The problem affecting the majority of services was caused by a flawed update by CrowdStrike, an American cybersecurity firm, whose systems are designed to protect users from hackers. Microsoft said on Friday that it was aware of an issue affecting machines running “CrowdStrike Falcon.”

European Central Bank policymakers held interest rates steady on Thursday, as they reiterated their cautious approach to cutting rates as inflation bumps around above the bank’s target. Last month, policymakers cut the interest rate a quarter point, the first reduction in nearly five years and a tentative step toward easing. Inflation in the eurozone has fallen a long way from its double-digit highs in late 2022, and policymakers are trying to ensure it returns to their 2 percent target sustainably. Average inflation across the 20 countries that use the euro was 2.5 percent in June, slightly lower than it was in May but higher than in April. “Inflation is expected to fluctuate around current levels for the rest of the year,” Christine Lagarde, the president of the European Central Bank, said at a news conference in Frankfurt.

A little over two months ago, Elon Musk found himself at Montsorrel, the palatial Palm Beach compound of Nelson Peltz, the famed activist investor. Mr. Musk knew the sprawling grounds well, having stayed in the guesthouse. But Mr. Musk had a darker message that spring day. Mr. Trump had to win, Mr. Musk said. Tesla, his electric car company, barely advertises, he said, but had still built a cult following through word of mouth.

Inflation in Britain held steady in June as the Bank of England inches toward its first interest rate cut in years and economists pondered whether a global pop star helped keep services prices higher. Food inflation also slowed, with prices rising just 1.5 percent compared with a year ago. But the June inflation data came in slightly higher than expected. Core inflation, which excludes energy and food prices, was expected to dip but remained at 3.5 percent in June. Traders reduced their bets on an August rate cut, giving it about a 35 percent chance.

A fight to form the first union at an Amazon warehouse in Britain came to an end this week, as organizers of the effort fell short by just 28 votes. More than 3,000 Amazon workers were eligible to vote. It is the closest any Amazon center in Britain has come to being unionized. In the United States, only one warehouse, on Staten Island, has a formally recognized union. A labor union in Germany has been trying to get collective bargaining powers for more than a decade.
