The campaign trail will run as much through various court rooms as through the fabled rituals of an American election year. Furthermore, the events surrounding Trump’s denial of his 2020 election defeat have been in the public domain for years. But Trump’s team has already warned it may need up to three-and-a-half years to prepare his defense. His forceful opening gambit on the date suggests a strategy to ensure that any compromise date the judge arrives at will still be relatively early in 2024. The question of a trial date will likely wait for a subsequent hearing.

Ron DeSantis completed his campaign reset by replacing his campaign manager. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday completed the full-scale reboot of his once-promising presidential campaign, reassigning his campaign manager and elevating a loyal hand from his governor's office. James Uthmeier, DeSantis' chief of staff in Tallahassee, will now lead his campaign, news first reported by The Messenger. DeSantis' former campaign manager Generra Peck, who also led DeSantis' midterm reelection romp, will remain as a chief strategist. Uthmeier's elevation comes after the DeSantis campaign laid off more than a third of its staff that once boasted more than 90 people.

All of this frenzied activity unfolding on one day represents just a snapshot of the complex legal morass now surrounding Trump. And while Monday was notable for a head-spinning sequence of legal maneuvering, it did not even encompass all of the pending cases against Trump. When it comes to Smith’s indictment, Trump’s lawyers are arguing that he was within his rights to claim the election was stolen. Trump’s legal plight reverberates in 2024 campaignAny normal political candidate would have seen their political ambitions crushed by even one of the cases in Trump’s bulging portfolio of legal jeopardy. Thanks to Trump’s unfathomable and widening legal nightmare, nothing about the 2024 election is going to be anywhere near normal.

REUTERS/Scott Morgan/File PhotoAug 7 (Reuters) - Donald Trump plans to attend the upcoming Iowa State Fair but will skip events with other Republican presidential candidates, an aide to the former president said on Monday, a move likely designed to steal the limelight from his White House rivals. Most of his rivals have agreed to be interviewed individually at the state fair by Iowa's Republican Governor Kim Reynolds between Aug. 11 and Aug. 18, but Trump turned down her invitation. In 2015, early in his ultimately successful bid for the White House, and when most pundits were dismissing his campaign, Trump flew into the Iowa State Fair in a helicopter. "Just like he had a great event in 2015, he's going to have a great event at the Iowa State Fair in 2023," the aide told Reuters.

The chance of Trump winning another term is very real

Similarly, Clinton’s edge was in the single digits over Obama in South Carolina at this stage of the campaign. Of course, winning the primary is one thing for Trump, who has led in almost every single Republican primary poll published in the past eight years. A poll out last week from Marquette University Law School had Biden and Trump tied percentage-wise (with a statistically insignificant few more respondents choosing Trump). The good news for Democrats is that general election polling, unlike primary polling, is not predictive at this point. But for now, the chance that Trump is president in less than two years time is a very real possibility.

Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law Friday that bans most abortions in the state as early as six weeks into pregnancy. But it is already facing a legal challenge after a group of abortion providers in the state filed a suit to try and stop the law. Protestors fill the Iowa State Capitol rotunda, as the Iowa Legislature convenes for special session to pass 6-week 'fetal heartbeat' abortion ban Tuesday, July 11, 2023. National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison called the ban the “latest show of abortion extremism from MAGA Republicans.”“Governor Kim Reynolds just signed a cruel abortion ban into law among a crowd of extremists who cheered as Iowan women’s abortion rights were stripped away,” Harrison said in a statement Friday. Meanwhile, anti-abortion groups, including National Right to Life and Iowa Right to Life, praised Reynolds and the law’s supporters in the state legislature for the abortion ban.

DeSantis is scheduled to visit Iowa on Friday, his third trip to the state since declaring his presidential bid. His wife, Casey DeSantis, last week traveled to Iowa to launch a national "Mamas for DeSantis" campaign focused on parental rights, hoping to win over the swing vote of suburban Republican women. DeSantis' supporters are also emphasizing what they see as the similarities between DeSantis and Kim Reynolds, Iowa's popular Republican governor, said one person close to the campaign. "The campaign has the most sophisticated and experienced team ever in Iowa, and is poised to crush DeSantis," Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said. A dearth of reliable polling in Iowa makes it difficult to assess the real strength of both DeSantis and Trump in the state.

Union workers missed out on a frenzy of wage increases by employers desperate for workers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Low unemployment makes it easier for union workers to stand firm during negotiations. Union workers also want more affordable healthcare, paid sick time and more-flexible scheduling for greater work-life balance. Some workers said the base wage increase was insufficient and balked at higher out-of-pocket medical costs. Late last year, U.S. freight railroad workers rejected a five-year contract that included a 24% wage increase, citing lack of paid sick leave.

Opinion What a Motherless Son Knows About FatherhoodWhen I was 8, maybe 9 years old, there was a day when students in my class could bring their parents to school. I’ve no memory of this proclamation of my paternal dreams, but I know I’ve long perceived fatherhood as a noble pursuit. My father-figure admiration likely originated from watching my dad, flummoxed by grief, in the years after the plane crash in which my mother died at age 37. Pence announces 2024 presidential campaign

CNN —Former Vice President Mike Pence announced he’s running for president on Wednesday, setting up a battle for the Republican nomination with his former boss, Donald Trump. In a launch video released ahead of his campaign kickoff later in the day in Iowa, Pence casts himself as a Reagan Republican seeking to return America to conservative principles. Though a loyal second-in-command to Trump, Pence broke with him by refusing to overturn the 2020 election results and presiding over Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s victory on January 6, 2021. An evangelical Christian, Pence was picked to be Trump’s running mate in the 2016 election in hopes of bolstering his standing among Christian conservatives. And although some Trump supporters have spurned Pence, other Republicans have applauded Pence for his actions on January 6.

To better understand, we took a national poll and talked to two dozen high school students in five states. It’s a different world from when his older sister, Brianna Henderson, attended just seven years ago, when there were very few openly gay students. Former US Vice President Mike Pence speaks during the Nixon National Energy Conference at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in Yorba Linda, California, on Wednesday, April 19, 2023. Mike Pence plans to enter the GOP presidential nomination fray June 7 with a campaign video and a kickoff speech in Des Moines, Iowa, according to a person familiar with his launch schedule. Redefining himself to Republican voters, most of whom know him primarily as Trump's vice president, will be a challenge. CNN —South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott on Monday will formally enter the Republican presidential primary as he seeks to upend a contest that has so far been dominated by coverage of former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. The most prominent Black figure in the Republican Party, Scott will address supporters at his alma mater, Charleston Southern University, in his hometown of North Charleston. In 2010, he became the first Black Republican elected to the US House of Representatives from South Carolina in more than a century. Years later, after being appointed to his Senate seat (he won a special election to retain the seat), Scott made history as the first Black US Senator from his native South Carolina. “We know how dangerous Tea Party extremist Tim Scott is,” South Carolina Democratic Party chair Christale Spain said in a statement.
On top of the GOP gubernatorial primary in Kentucky, there are other contests taking place on Tuesday that could provide some clues about 2024 — even though it’s hard to draw too many lessons from individual races. Voters are also heading to the polls in Pennsylvania, which is hosting a crowded Democratic primary for Philadelphia mayor. Two races will also provide some insight into voter attitudes in two key counties in two crucial battlegrounds. In other Pence news, he will attend Iowa GOP Sen. Joni Ernst’s “Roast and Ride” event next month, per Fox News (former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley is also attending). Jumping in: Former state Rep. Leslie Love jumped into the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan on Monday.
DeSantis hasn't said whether he thinks Trump lost the 2020 election. Asked by a reporter on Monday to directly acknowledge Trump lost, DeSantis stated only the fact that in 2020 "Biden becomes president." Trump continues to falsely deny that he lost the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. But DeSantis, who is consistently the only Republican to poll second to Trump in a hypothetical 2024 field, hasn't directly said he believes Trump lost in 2020. In Iowa over the weekend, DeSantis subtly jabbed at Trump for his fixation on the 2020 election.
Two killed as tornadoes, storms rip through Oklahoma
  + stars: | 2023-04-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
April 20 (Reuters) - At least two people were killed in McClain County, Oklahoma, as severe thunderstorms and tornadoes swept through several regions of Central U.S. late on Wednesday, local authorities said. The storms resulted in at least two fatalities with crews responding to several people injured and trapped in their homes, McClain County Emergency Management said in a Facebook post, urging residents to stay out of the affected areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued warnings for severe thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes for Wednesday into the night across parts of the Central U.S. including Oklahoma, Kansas and Iowa. Strong thunderstorms with severe weather potential were forecast for Thursday morning into the afternoon, according to the NWS. Almost 20,000 customers in Oklahoma remained without power as of early Thursday due to the storms, according to the website poweroutage.us.
"Our country is once again being tested," Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, said in a 3-minute video announcement. Once he does so, he'll be the fourth Republican to enter the Republican primary contest against former President Donald Trump. Nikki Haley of South Carolina announced that she was appointing then-Rep. Tim Scott to the Senate on December 17, 2012. Haley and Scott could potentially be competitors to win the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Haley, who was South Carolina governor at the time, appointed Scott to the seat in 2013 after then-Sen. Jim DeMint resigned.
Opinion: Texas judge’s stunning ruling caps extraordinary week
  + stars: | 2023-04-09 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +17 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Tennessee legislators targeted three members of the state House for joining a gun control protest in the chamber, expelling two young Black men while failing to oust a 60-year-old White woman. (He gave the Biden administration a week to appeal the ruling before it goes into effect. Thus, the week that began with Trump facing a judge in Manhattan ended with a Trump-appointed judge overturning more than two decades of medical practice. “They go far too fast to be safe on the sidewalk” and aren’t right for bike lanes or roads either.
