CNN —Two women held in Suffolk County jail say they had encounters with the Gilgo Beach killings suspect Rex Heuermann, describing the meetings with him as “violent” and “aggressive,” sheriff’s department spokesperson Vicki DiStefano said Thursday. The alleged encounters with the two female sex workers are believed to have happened more than a decade ago, said DiStefano, noting the women expressed concern for their safety during the time they say they were with Heuermann. The information was uncovered as part of ongoing interviews by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department human trafficking unit, which was created to help those incarcerated have access to services and support they need to recover. Since Heuermann’s July 13 arrest, the unit has been interviewing sex workers, as well as showing a picture of Heuermann to women, to see if they recall any interactions with him. He has pleaded not guilty in the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello.

Prosecutors added those charges this year, after Bankman-Fried's December 2022 extradition from the Bahamas in the wake of FTX's collapse. He had asked U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan to dismiss the new charges or alternatively separate them from his Oct. 2 trial. Prosecutors have said they will drop the charges if the Caribbean nation does not consent to them. Lawyers for Bankman-Fried have asked that at least 11 of the charges be dismissed.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan expressed his concerns at a hearing where Bankman-Fried's lawyers sought to dismiss at least 11 of 13 charges their client faces. He had asked Kaplan to dismiss six of the 13 charges because the Caribbean country did not consent, and five more because they rested on an invalid legal theory. The judge also said Bankman-Fried appeared to lack standing to invoke an extradition treaty between the two countries to get those charges - including bank fraud and bribing Chinese officials - dismissed. Prosecutors have said their charges did not rely on that theory because Bankman-Fried schemed to take his victims' money. Separately, Kaplan denied Bankman-Fried's request to force prosecutors to review some of FTX's files.

Sam Bankman-Fried was facing 13 criminal charges after the downfall of FTX. Sam Bankman-Fried hasn't been having a great year, but he did win a small victory on Wednesday. That's because those accusations were only submitted after Bankman-Fried was extradited from the Bahamas, where his crypto exchange was headquartered. It sounds like a good, if small, victory for the man currently out on $250 million bail. Prosecutors requested that the judge schedule a trial over them for the first quarter of next year.

NEW YORK, June 12 (Reuters) - New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell, the first woman to lead the nation's largest police department, on Monday said she is resigning after serving 18 months in the post. Mayor Eric Adams, himself a former New York police captain, appointed Sewell as the city's 45th police commissioner when he took office in January 2022. Raised in the New York borough of Queens, Sewell succeeded Dermot Shea, who was appointed the city's top cop in 2019 by then-Mayor Bill de Blasio. Adams credited Sewell with playing "a leading role in this administration's tireless work to make New York City safer." Neither Sewell nor the mayor made clear the effective date of her resignation or made mention of a replacement.
