CNN —A Massachusetts teacher who staged a mock slave auction and used the N-word in a 5th-grade class has been placed on leave, according to a letter sent to parents by the school’s superintendent. The school district is about 30 miles west of Boston. In January, the teacher – who is not named in the letter – held an “impromptu mock slave auction” during a lesson on the Atlantic triangle slave trade, during which slave auctions were discussed, the letter said. “It was later brought to the District’s attention that the ‘N-word’ does not appear in the book,” Martineau said. CNN has reached out to the school and to the school district for further comment.

CNN —Former JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes will join Airbus as the company’s North American leader. Airbus reported record annual jet orders in 2023, but in a statement Monday, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury hinted at plans for further expansion in North America. The announcement of Hayes’ Airbus appointment comes just over two months after he left JetBlue, which has a fleet of Airbus planes. “It’s time I put more focus on my health and well-being.”In a statement Monday, Hayes said he was excited and energized to join Airbus after taking time off. As chairman and CEO of the North American business, Hayes will lead Airbus’ commercial aircraft business and oversee the company’s helicopters and space and defense business in the region.

New York CNN —Trendy fashion retailer Express Inc. has filed for bankruptcy after consistently struggling with continued missteps over its merchandise mix that failed to get shoppers excited. The retailer filed with the bankruptcy court in Delaware and said it also plans to shutter several stores as part of the process. The company operates Express, Express factory outlets, Bonobos and UpWest stores under its corporate umbrella and said in a release Monday that it plans to close 95 Express locations (it operates more than 500 in the US) and all UpWest locations with closing sales at those stores set to begin on April 23. “With the company struggling to gain traction with consumers, it has been obvious for quite some time that bankruptcy was the inevitable destination for Express,” Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, said in a note Monday. “We are taking an important step that will strengthen our financial position and enable Express to continue advancing our business initiatives.
