In the spirit of ESPN's Monday Night Countdown, a word to Federal Reserve Chairman, Jay Powell ... "C'Mon Man!" While the markets have rebounded nicely on Thursday, it seems to me that Federal Reserve chair Jay Powell unnecessarily complicated the outlook for interest rate policy on Wednesday by saying the Fed will decide, meeting by meeting, what to do next. Meanwhile, long-term interest rates, after having fallen for weeks in anticipation of a half-point cut, which the Fed delivered, have actually moved up a bit. I'm not entirely certain but I suspect it's the lack of clear direction on future rate policy that is the culprit. In those days, the Fed was loathe to discuss its actions publicly and only signaled to markets what it had done with respect to interest rate policy a considerable time after the action was undertaken.

The annual Florida Python Challenge has slithered to its conclusion, with professionally-categorized python purger Ronald Kiger crowned its victor after removing 20 Burmese pythons from the Florida Everglades. The commission revealed 195 Burmese pythons were successfully removed from the wild during the challenge. The hunt is designed to bring awareness to the invasive threat of the Burmese python species in Florida. These snakes are found primarily in and around the Everglades ecosystem in South Florida, where they prey on birds, mammals and other reptiles. Burmese pythons can spread diseases amongst native animals, affect native snakes and have high mercury levels that are dangerous for human consumption.

The dollar steadied on Wednesday as stronger-than-expected U.S. retail sales had traders slightly trimming bets that the U.S. easing cycle will begin with an outsized interest rate cut. The Federal Reserve is expected to make its first interest rate cut in more than four years at 1800 GMT, which will be followed by a news conference half an hour later. A rate cut is fully priced, with interest rate futures implying a 63% chance of a 50 basis point cut, after flirting with 70% a day earlier. Traders say the Fed's tone as well as the size of the rate cut will drive the next moves in the foreign exchange market. China's stock, bond and currency markets resume trade on Wednesday after the mid-autumn festival break, though it is a holiday on Wednesday in Hong Kong.
