COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations have been on the rise in the U.S. as fall approaches. Nearly 845 coronavirus deaths were reported for the week ending Aug. 19, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s up from about 520 deaths a month prior. Meanwhile, COVID-19 hospitalizations have been increasing in the U.S. for nine weeks, reaching more than 20,500 new hospital admissions during the week ending Sept. 9 – an increase of nearly 8% from the prior week. While the totals are smaller than in previous waves of the virus in the U.S., they mark noteworthy trends heading into the fall and winter seasons.

CNN —Frank Lomani’s game-ending kick may have drifted wide of the posts, but that mattered little for Fiji’s players. As the final whistle blew on the Rugby World Cup group stage match, they could now celebrate beating Australia for the first time in the tournament’s history – and a first victory against the Wallabies since 1954. Soon after, the players huddled together and – as is a tradition for Fijian rugby teams – sang a hymn to give their thanks to God. Fiji's players form a circle after defeating Australia for the first time in 69 years. Two-time champion Australia could now be knocked out of the Rugby World Cup group stages for the first time.

"Fiji is the most important match of our Rugby World Cup campaign," coach Eddie Jones said in a news release. "It's another big opportunity for our young side to keep getting better and we'll be ready on Sunday." The experienced Nic White will instead partner flyhalf Carter Gordon at halfback with rookie Issak Fines-Leleiwasa set to win his second test cap from the bench. Hooker Jordan Uelese has also recovered from injury and will back up starting rake David Porecki from the bench. Donaldson, a surprise selection brought into the side primarily for his place-kicking, added 15 points from the tee with three penalties and three conversions. "There is a real feeling this team could do something," Eddie Jones said after the first victory of his second reign as Australia coach. "We've got a young team, it's a great learning experience for them. Georgia never looked like adding another top tier victim to their tally after wins over Italy and Wales in the last 13 months but battled to the bitter end and scored tries through Luka Ivanishvili and Beka Gigashvili. A key Russian demand has been the reconnection of the Russian Agricultural Bank, Rosselkhozbank, to the SWIFT international payments system. "SWIFT has already confirmed that an expedited application process could be possible, bringing the time for effective access within 30 days," Guterres wrote. Russian fertilizer companies would also have to apply to national authorities within the EU for exemptions and the U.N. would engage with the EU on those requests. London CNN —It will be a bittersweet day for Britain’s royal family Friday as they mark not only the first year of King Charles III’s reign but the one-year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. Charles is currently in Balmoral – the beloved royal property in Aberdeenshire where his mother retreated annually for a summer break. The Prince and Princess of Wales viewed the floral tributes to the Queen at Sandringham, September 15, 2022. The pair will then meet people from the local community – some of whom previously met Queen Elizabeth II during various visits to the city. For several royal experts, the King has used the past 12 months to blend the two reigns and strengthen the monarchy.

SEOUL — The United States, South Korea and Japan staged joint naval missile defense drills off the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday, as North Korea accused Washington and its allies of creating "the most unstable waters with the danger of a nuclear war." The three nations staged exercises in international waters off South Korea's southern Jeju island to improve their ability to detect and track targets, and share information in the event of provocation by Pyongyang, South Korea's military said. In a speech to mark Navy Day, Kim said the "gang bosses" of the United States, Japan and South Korea announced regular joint military exercises, news agency KCNA reported, apparently referring to their Aug. 18 summit at Camp David, Maryland.

Thursday's sell-off is a buying opportunity as key support levels remain in place, according to Fundstrat. Stocks closed sharply lower on Thursday after the market failed to maintain the momentum from much stronger-than-expected earnings out of Nvidia. The S & P 500 initially popped before ending the day down 1.35% — it's biggest one-day loss since Aug. 2. "Bottom line, Thursday's reversal wasn't severe enough to call for a pullback to new monthly lows," Newton said. "Moreover, I'm still expecting that U.S. Equity markets can move higher after Thursday's reversal, which might allow for a brief move above SPX-4500 before any additional weakness gets underway."

NEW YORK, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Esmark Inc majority owner and chief executive James Bouchard said in an interview on Tuesday that his steel maker, which does not publicly report its earnings, has cash for its $7.8 billion bid for U.S. Steel Corp (X.N) sitting in his bank account. Esmark unveiled its offer on Monday after Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (CLF.N), another steel maker, said on Sunday it had made a $7.3 billion offer for U.S. Steel, which the latter rejected. "I got $10 billion in cash in my bank account," Bouchard said. Bouchard, a former U.S. Steel executive, said Esmark was "the third largest steelmaker in the country", without elaborating with any figures. Debates over U.S. corn and soybean yield potential have persisted all summer following one of the driest Junes on record. Soy yield’s range of 1.5 bpa is a six-year low, well below the 2.9-bpa average, raising the risk of surprise. The trade nailed corn yield last August, coming within 0.3% of USDA’s figure, analysts’ best performance since 2001. I posted a Twitter poll midday on Thursday asking which yield surprise could be most likely on Friday: corn high, corn low, soybeans high or soybeans low. After about two hours and 555 votes, corn yield surprising high was the clear leader with 40% of the vote.

The consumer price index report out Thursday is supportive of a soft landing. We'll see if it turns around this recent swoon in the stock market. There's an old saw on Wall Street: in corrections it takes a lot longer to lose the first 5% because people buy the dip. The macro data (China excepted), including today's CPI, has been supportive of the soft landing. There's a huge swath of investors that seem perfectly happy to collect 5% yields on their 1-year Treasuries, market rally be damned.

Uday Kotak plans to remain on the board of the $44 billion lender carrying his name after he steps down as CEO in December. India’s regulator will bear that in mind as it also decides if someone from inside Kotak Mahindra Bank (KTKM.NS) can succeed the 64-year-old. In the past, the regulator has booted out private bank chiefs for poor management of bad loans and overhauled a bank board where it perceived succession planning was poor. Kremlin officials said Russia had not been invited to the talks but was monitoring them, state media reported. Beijing had steered clear of a previous round of talks in Denmark in June, but has deepened ties with Saudi Arabia in recent years. China scored a diplomatic win in the Middle East earlier this year when it helped broker a landmark normalization deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In a statement from the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Saudi Arabia stressed the importance of “benefiting from views and positive suggestions” made during the meeting. In the meantime, the prospect of direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine seem as far-fetched as ever, as the grueling war approaches the 18-month mark.

The company continues to work toward Starliner's crew flight test, which is planned to carry NASA astronauts to the ISS in a final demonstration before beginning regular spaceflights.
