Why are bidets just now getting popular in America?
  + stars: | 2024-03-24 | by ( Ramishah Maruf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
It took a toilet paper shortage for some to come around to the 18th-century invention. A common reason why bidets aren’t used in the US is that during World War 2, American soldiers saw brothels utilizing bidets. Big Toilet PaperWhen the great toilet paper shortage hit in 2020, many Americans realized there could be another way to clean themselves. Using toilet paper had seemed, somehow, American, with toilet paper jokes a staple in bathroom humor and “TP-ing” a stereotypical rite of passage for teens. With the toilet paper mania, she decided to kill two birds with one stone and splurge on a Tushy.

The simmering topic has been up for debate, in part because prices for NFL teams have risen so high that they threaten to restrict who can be a lead owner. This raises the question: Are investments in sports teams actually a good investment, especially for risk-averse investors like pensions and endowments? According to new research published in Investments & Wealth Publications in November, the answer is a resounding yes. For the article, he teamed up with his father, Arun Muralidhar, the chairman and founder of Mcube Investment Technologies, which develops decision-support products for institutional investment managers. Welcome to Nvidia's super chip era

Jensen Huang declared the start of the "super-chip" era on Monday. The Nvidia CEO ushered in a new phase for his sector by unveiling a new breed of chips to power AI. Flower Arrangements Are Reaching New Heights
  + stars: | 2024-03-15 | by ( Alice Cavanagh | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
“I have so much admiration for florists who can make haphazard, wild arrangements,” says Miguel Yatco, 30, the floral artist behind the Brooklyn-based studio Agos Muni. If last summer saw the culmination of a trend for sprawling, low-lying floral landscapes, Yatco’s work represents an aesthetic about-face. But these works are also defined by their height, their long stems often extending above or through equally elongated vessels. Compared to the bouffant-like silhouettes of Bosschaert’s assemblages, Boutemy’s were narrow, continuing the line of the cylindrical Venetian bubble-glass vases that held them. “Rigor and clarity are the most important things,” Boutemy says, and an elongated shape means “each flower remains visible and each gives strength to another.”

Nvidia stock could triple if it follows Cisco's path during the dot-com bubble, Jeremy Siegel said. Reddit is targeting a $6.4 billion valuation for its IPO this year. The company is planning to sell 22 million shares, with a pricing range of $31 to $34. At the top end of the valuation range, the offering would raise $748 million. About 15.3 million of the 22 million shares will be sold by the company. Reddit's expected pricing range sets a fully diluted valuation range between $5.8 billion and $6.4 billion, marking a sharp decrease from the $10 billion private valuation the company achieved in its last funding round, in August 2021.

Cabbage Is Having a Moment
  + stars: | 2024-03-10 | by ( Kim Severson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In a world in which it’s hard for a vegetable to get a break, cabbage is winning. Cabbage has been a global culinary workhorse for centuries. Like so many American food trends, fancy cabbage dishes first started turning up in restaurants on the coasts a few years ago. At Good Hot Fish in Asheville, N.C., shredded green cabbage stars in a pancake punched up with sorghum hot sauce. For a story in The Times, I spoke with farmers, chefs and food critics and ate cabbage in three cities, seeking to understand how the vegetable earned this moment in the spotlight.

The main explanation for the recent gain in bitcoin's price is the Securities and Exchange Commission's begrudged blessing of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds, investment vehicles that track bitcoin's price. As bitcoin ETF providers have to invest in the underlying assets — bitcoins — demand for those assets increases. "The speed of the come-up is much faster than I thought," he said, adding that he was specifically surprised at retail-trader activity in the bitcoin ETFs. (Also, not everyone agrees it will be good for bitcoin's price.) Or maybe, just maybe, the latest run will cement bitcoin's future as a more stable part of people's investment portfolios.

"Bitcoin reclaiming its all-time high yet again shows it is never going away," said Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital. Catalysts driving the surge in the cryptocurrency include the U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs that started trading earlier this year, along with the tightening bitcoin supply ahead of the late April "halving." "The odds have always been against bitcoin," Thorn said, citing naysayers who have referred to it as "a bubble" and compared it to the "tulip mania" in Holland during the 1600s. "Retail interest is oftentimes momentum driven, and all-time high levels are a pivotal momentum driver for even more investment," he told CNBC. Nevertheless, U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs have brought legitimacy to it and been hugely popular, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) passing $10 billion in assets under management last week.

Equities may be trading near their record highs, but there are still opportunities to buy some stocks at bargain-basement prices. To meet this criteria, the stocks had to have a trailing 12 month price-to-earnings ratio less than their five-year average. Additionally, the names also had to have a forward price-to-earnings ratio for the next 12 months that was below the Nasdaq-100's current 17.6. Here are the names that made the cut: PayPal , which has a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 12, was one name that made the list. A hot pink Barbie flip phone is launching this summer
  + stars: | 2024-02-25 | by ( Ryan Browne | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The company behind Nokia-branded smartphones, HMD, short for Human Mobile Devices, says it is launching a Barbie flip phone this summer, in partnership with toy maker Mattel . Soon, you'll be able to get a flip phone from the blockbuster toy franchise. It won't be connected to the internet, making it a throwback to the "dumb phones" of yesteryear before smartphones became popular. The device looks like a standard flip phone with buttons rather than a touch screen, and comes in a hot pink color, resembling the iconic pink flip phone accessory that comes with many Barbie dolls. This is a step away from Nokia which is the brand HMD typically has used to sell its dumb phones and smartphones.

Nvidia’s market value catapults to $2 trillion
  + stars: | 2024-02-23 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
New York CNN —Nvidia joined an exclusive club on Friday morning when its market value topped $2 trillion, just days after the chipmaker reported gangbusters earnings that once again swept Wall Street into an artificial intelligence-induced fervor. Nvidia’s latest achievement comes after the company earlier this month surpassed Amazon and Alphabet in market value and become the third-largest company on Wall Street behind Microsoft and Apple. The company hit a $1 trillion market cap in 2023, about 24 years after going public. Its meteoric growth over the past year came as artificial intelligence mania consumed Wall Street and helped power a ferocious bull market. Nvidia has emerged the poster child of AI on Wall Street, in part because it is crucial to the burgeoning AI space.

New York CNN —Lionel Messi’s debut in his first full Major League Soccer season might not cost fans the extraordinary prices seen last year for his first-ever game with Inter Miami, but they do show that “Messi Mania” hasn’t diminished despite his rocky preseason. That’s 1,257% more expensive than the cheapest, or “get in” price of last season’s home opener when it cost $7 for a seat. Prices on the secondary market are elevated for the rest of Inter Miami’s season with tickets about 70% more expensive than last year. In particular, Inter Miami sales are 150-times higher compared to the start of last season and is the most in-demand MLS team, with the Los Angeles Galaxy in second and the New England Revolution in third. “The surge in sales for Inter Miami, and the league as a whole, are a testament to his legacy as a soccer star,” said StubHub spokesperson Adam Budell told CNN.

New York CNN —“Madame Web” swung to No. In November, “The Marvels” saw a lackluster $47 million in domestic sales its opening weekend, and DC’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” opened in December to a feeble $27.6 million. It’s still too soon to estimate gross domestic sales for “Madame Web,” but, by the time it exited theaters, “Morbius” had made just $73 million. But “Madame Web,” which released February 14, struggled to gain upward momentum even along its six-day opening, which straddled two holidays: Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. Stocks continued their bull market tear on Thursday, with the S&P 500 closing at a new record high of 5,029. But don’t expect the run to continue, says Lukasz Tomicki, founder of LRT Capital Management, a hedge fund managing $120 million in assets. “I think the market is pricing in perfection,” Tomicki told Business Insider. Another reason he’s bearish on the economy’s prospects is because the money supply is declining, meaning liquidity in the economy is shrinking. The cheaper end of the hotel industry is typically less volatile in an economic downturn, Tomicki said.
