New York CNN —JCPenney CEO Marc Rosen sees plenty of evidence that working-class families are struggling. “And that customer is facing a tougher economic environment.”The JCPenney CEO pointed to the snowballing effect inflation has had on family budgets, noting that the typical household is spending about $700 more per month than they did two years ago for the same goods and services. He pointed to strong private brand sales for apparel as well as for home goods like cookware and small appliances such as blenders and toasters. The JCPenney CEO wouldn’t directly answer whether the department store plans to return to the public markets through an initial public offering. “We think there are a lot of advantages right now to being a private company,” Rosen said, noting that JCPenney’s owners are reinvesting in the company and are taking a “long-term perspective” on that investment.

U.S. Consumers Show Signs of Stress
  + stars: | 2023-08-25 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
After a post-pandemic shopping spree, some Americans are becoming more selective with their spending as they struggle with factors like inflation. Although overall consumer spending remains strong, analysts say they detect worrying shifts in shopping habits. Financial reports this week from retailers including Macy’s, Kohl’s, Foot Locker and Nordstrom suggest that consumers are no longer buying with abandon. Executives also flagged rising credit card delinquencies and higher rates of retail theft as ominous signs that consumers could be strapped for cash. China, the world’s second-largest economy, which once seemed unstoppable, is plagued by a series of problems and a growing lack of faith in the future.

Consumers power the U.S. economy, and their capacity to spend has repeatedly defied predictions. In early 2020, after a short but severe recession caused by the pandemic, consumers splurged on big-ticket goods, from patio furniture to flat-screen TVs and home gym equipment. Then came what economists called “revenge spending” with experiences that were off-limits during lockdowns, like traveling and going to concerts, taking precedence. Financial reports from retailers — including Macy’s, Kohl’s, Foot Locker and Nordstrom — that landed this week suggest a shift is underway, from consumers buying with abandon to spending more on their needs. Retail sales in July were stronger than expected, leading some economists to raise their forecasts for economic growth this quarter.

Macy’s sounds the alarm on credit card delinquenciesMacy’s is warning of a spike in customers who are failing to make credit card payments, adding to the evidence of mounting financial stress on consumers, reports my colleague Matt Egan. This situation is hurting Macy’s business, driving down credit card revenue by 36% year over year and contributing to a quarterly loss, he said. Citing worsening consumer leverage metrics, Macy’s is bracing for a further increase in “bad debt” in its credit card portfolio.

New York CNN —Gap reported declining sales across all four of its brands – Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta – in the second quarter, noting continued uncertainty among consumers. At its flagship Gap stores, sales were driven by “continued strength in the women’s category,” the company noted in its earnings statement, but that was “offset by strategic store closures in North America.”Across its brands, the company reported an 11% decline in online sales versus store sales, which were down 7%. Excluding the negative impact from selling Gap China to Baozun in January, shutting down Yeezy Gap, and headwinds from a stronger dollar, sales declined 4% at Gap. Old Navy sales declined 6% compared to last year, Banana Republic sales were down 11% and Athleta decreased 1%. The decline is prompting the retailer to close 30% of its Gap and Banana Republic stores in North America by next year.

That’s important, because Americans’ spending on goods and services accounts for two-thirds of US gross domestic product. Historically, sluggish retail sales, credit card delinquency and even shoplifting have been signs of a dark cloud on the horizon. The question of credit card debt is another area where the nuance matters. And as a share of total credit card debt, it is relatively low. But Americans’ credit card debt is unquestionably rising.

Citing worsening consumer leverage metrics, Macy’s is bracing for a further increase in “bad debt” in its credit card portfolio. “I think the credit card revenue is an indication of some of the pressures that we’re actually seeing on the consumer,” Mitchell said. Consumer credit card debt topped $1 trillion during the second quarter for the first time on record, according to the New York Federal Reserve. More concerningly, new credit card and auto loan delinquencies have now surpassed pre-Covid levels, according to Moody’s Investors Service.

The R.H. Macy and Co.flagship department store is seen in midtown New York, New York, U.S. November 11, 2015. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 22 (Reuters) - Macy's (M.N) kept its annual forecasts unchanged even though its second-quarter sales and profit beat market expectations on Tuesday as the upscale department store chain expects consumer spending to stay under pressure. It reaffirmed its 2023 sales expectations of $22.8 billion to $23.2 billion and adjusted full-year profit per share between $2.70 and $3.20. "Despite beating profit and sales expectations, Macy’s earnings show that discretionary demand remains constrained as shoppers allocate more of their budgets to everyday necessities," Insider Intelligence analyst Rachel Wolff said. Comparable sales for Macy's-owned and licensed stores fell 7.3%, compared with expectations of a 6.48% drop, according to Refinitiv data.

New York CNN —Dick’s Sporting Goods warned Tuesday that retail theft is damaging its business and would lead to lower annual profits. Retail “shrink” is a term that refers to merchandise that goes missing due to theft, fraud, damage, accounting errors or other reasons. The retailer reported a large number of incidents of shoplifting and organized retail crime in its stores nationwide. Need and opportunity become forceful catalysts for driving up incidents of retail crime, experts said. According to the National Retail Federation, the industry’s biggest trade group, large-scale store theft is becoming a bigger part of retail shrink.

Sales at stores declined 8% and digital sales dropped 10% compared with the year-ago period. Comparable sales on an owned plus licensed basis dropped 7.3%, a little worse than the 6.5% decline that analysts expected, according to Refinitiv. The chain's comparable sales fell 8.2% on an owned plus licensed basis, but bright spots included fragrances, prestige cosmetics and men's tailored apparel. At upscale department store Bloomingdale's, comparable sales dropped 2.6% on an owned plus licensed basis as shoppers bought beauty items, women's contemporary and designer apparel and shoes. The smaller stores that have been open more than a year had sales growth in the second quarter, he said.

In an effort to boost sales, Macy's - which reports second-quarter results on Tuesday - has focused on revamping its private brands, including its new On 34th label launched in July. Analysts expect Macy's to post a 87% slide in second-quarter profit, dragged down by heavy discounting to clear spring and early summer merchandise, according to Refinitiv. Thirteen percent answered Walmart and 9% answered Amazon, compared to 5.8% for Macy's and 3.3% for Nordstrom. Nordstrom so far has disclosed few specifics about the new merchandise intended to revive the Rack, including the brands and categories it plans to prioritize. Some investors are betting on rate cuts as soon as early next year, perhaps on expectations that the economy might soon deteriorate. If unemployment spikes because of higher interest rates, for example, the Fed would likely cut rates to stem job losses under its mandate of maximum employment. The Fed’s tough talk has rattled the bond market, helping push up long-dated yields. In addition to the possibility of cutting rates because of an economic downturn, the Fed could also cut rates if inflation slows too much. “If the Fed sees that inflation goes below the 2% target, they could start decreasing interest rates, but I don’t think they are going to start decreasing interest rates until that happens,” said Eugenio Alemán, chief economist at Raymond James.

The Many Costs of Shoplifting - The New York Times

Even for adults, it’s hard not to be self-conscious about having a store employee trail you through the drugstore like a personal shopper as you ponder which dental floss to buy. Walking from aisle to aisle pushing a series of buttons, I felt like an imposition on a pharmacy’s meager staff. The whole experience felt bad: I was sorry for the shopkeeper, sorry for the employees, sorry for being there, sorry for not buying enough. The material costs of shoplifting are considerable. In 2021, an estimated $94.5 billion nationwide was lost to shoplifting and other forms of “retail shrink” (which includes damaged or lost goods and employee theft).

CNN —First came Toys R Us’ roller coaster revival, and now Babies R Us is experiencing its own rebirth, too. Babies R Us, which went out of business in tandem with its parent company, Toys R Us, in 2018, is opening its new US flagship store on Wednesday at the American Dream Mall in New Jersey. Tru Kids had bought Toys R Us (which also owned Babies R Us) in a 2018 liquidation sale and had attempted to resurrect the toy store chain, opening two locations in New Jersey and Texas in late 2019. It opened a new 20,000 square foot Toys R Us flagship store, also at the American Dream Mall, in December 2021. He said Babies R Us’ comeback will “mimic” that of Toys R Us: “Expect the same ambitious rollout,” said Shmidman, adding that WHP is looking at taking Babies R Us nationwide with a similar partnership to Macy’s-Toys R Us.

New York CNN —As the second-quarter earnings season kicks off this week, investors want answers on the health of the United States’ companies and its economy. The projected second-quarter earnings decline for companies listed in the S&P 500 is roughly 7.6% compared to the prior year, according to FactSet. That would be the third consecutive quarter of declines and the largest earnings decline reported by the broad-based index since a roughly 32% loss during the second quarter of 2020. But investors will be looking even more closely at what companies forecast for their financial performance and the broader economy. Numerous firework displays are scheduled to light up the skies in and around New York City this Independence Day, including the 47th annual Macy’s Fourth of July celebration, which will send 60,000 shells into the night sky from five barges in the East River. While there may be a chance that the celebrations could be impacted by smoke from Canadian wildfires, which continue to affect air quality across the region, for now, several shows are still planned for Tuesday night. The Macy’s festivities will begin at 8 p.m. with live musical performances, including by the U.S. Army Field band, followed by a 25-minute fireworks display at around 9:25 p.m. This year’s “pyrotechnic salute to America” will feature a variety of new effects during this year’s show, and viewers can expect to see an average of 2,400 shells and effects per minute, according to event organizers.
