CNN —A man’s body was found inside a plastic barrel at a beach in Malibu, California, after a lifeguard spotted the unusual item floating offshore, officials announced. The body was inside a 55-liter black drum, which was discovered at Malibu Lagoon State Beach, Lieutenant Hugo Reynaga with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Monday. Homicide investigators are examining the circumstances surround the death of the man, who was identified as a Black adult, the sheriff’s department said in a release. A state park maintenance worker first spotted the large drum floating in the lagoon around 3 p.m. Sunday, Reynaga said. Around that time, it started planning Barbie parties: Celebrations with themed cocktails, pink food and plenty of opportunities to show off Barbiecore outfits in the Instagram-friendly venue, including life-size hot pink Barbie and Ken boxes. By marketing Barbie products to adults, large retailers may be able to get them to buy similar products for kids. With Barbie products that appeal to grown-ups, marketers are “getting that interactivity between adults and children, that bonding,” which can also be used as a selling point. The clothing retailer offers a Barbie line that includes Gap and Barbie branded t-shirts, jackets and more, for both kids and adults. Nordhielm pointed to Cold Stone Creamery’s Barbie pink cotton candy ice cream as a standout.

Corelogic identified how much Barbie's iconic Dreamhouse has appreciated since its 1962 debut. It discovered that Barbie's mansion has seen the most appreciation during the past three years. A new report from Corelogic identifies how much Barbie's iconic Dreamhouse — if it were real — has appreciated in 20 markets across the country since its debut in 1962. While a life-sized iteration of the Barbie Dreamhouse exists on Airbnb — though its booking period is now closed — it did not figure into Corelogic's price estimate. Thomas Malone, a researcher with Corelogic, told Insider that given the location of Barbie's Dreamhouse and the demand seen during the pandemic, it's not surprising that Barbie's home is so expensive today.

The plastic dolls were actually named for a sister and brother – the children of Mattel cofounder and Barbie creator Ruth Handler. AMC Entertainment (AMC.N), the struggling movie theater chain wrestling with a meme-stock hangover, saw its busiest day since 2019 this past Saturday. The company needs cash to survive, and this weekend might add enough fantasy to help it. AMC has refiled to try again, and in some ways, Barbenheimer helps. The biggest risk to the movie theater business was that it would never return to pre-pandemic levels. AMC Entertainment, one of the U.S.’s largest theater chains, recorded over 7 million moviegoers in attendance over that weekend.

That gave the pink-drenched film the largest opening weekend of 2023 so far and the biggest-ever debut for a female director. Timothy Richards, chief executive of Vue International, Europe’s largest privately owned movie theater operator, said in a statement Sunday that it had seen its biggest weekend in four years for ticket sales. AMC (AMC), the world’s largest movie theater chain, said last week that 60,000 people had bought tickets see both films on the same day. Cineworld, the world’s second-biggest movie theater chain and owner of Regal Cinemas, filed for bankruptcy in September after posting a total $3.3 billion loss over 2020 and 2021. So far, Cineworld has shuttered 51 of its Regal movie theaters in the US.

NEW YORK, July 23 (Reuters) - It is Barbie’s world, and U.S. small businesses hope their social-media marketing can help them cash in on it. But as Mattel-licensed Barbie marketing and products flood big companies' stores, hotel suites and social media posts, small firms also seek to capitalize on the hype. “Small businesses may look at the Barbie promotions and dream of that kind of budget and mass brand awareness,” said Brianne Fleming, an adjunct marketing instructor at University of Florida. MoonFire, an arts boutique based in Dallas, Texas, hosted a Barbie-themed collaboration in person with ten small businesses selling hot-pink, Barbie-inspired products. So, for small businesses, the strategy is to be a quick follower,” he said.

Karma Masselli woke up Thursday morning knowing it was a special day. Masselli, 26, and her group of about 25 friends began the festivities by rummaging through their closets for sheer pants and polyester shirts and pink Crocs to assemble their outfits, each representing a different doll: Cowgirl Barbie, Sporty Barbie, Vintage Barbie, Malibu Barbie, Mermaid Barbie and more. Next was “Barbie brunch” at a friend’s apartment in Brooklyn, featuring an array of pink foods, including pink deviled eggs, pop tarts, pasta salad with beets and pink salsa. “It felt like it was the Super Bowl at our ‘Barbie brunch,’” Masselli said. “It felt like we were getting together and having a holiday about girliness.”

Natasha Root started Fans Utopia, a site where people can buy adult stars' used items. In 2021, I had a dream that I helped my friend, an ex-porn star, sell her breast implants. So I started researching platforms that sold used items from people in the adult industry. We do everything on behalf of the adult stars since they are often so busy traveling and shooting content for work. The payment split depends on the adult star's agreement with us, but they take between 40% and 60% of the sale.

In the real world, it would be pretty expensive to live like Barbie — especially when it comes to housing. Consider Airbnb's life-size Barbie Dreamhouse rental in Malibu, an all-pink mansion decked out in Barbie décor, for example. That's a pretty high credit score; any score between 740 and 799 qualifies as "very good," according to Experian. While the oceanfront estate is privately owned and isn't actively for sale, several real estate companies have given varying estimates of what it may be worth. RubyHome estimates the pink mansion is worth about $10 million, Mariotti says.

Everything changed when Ryan Gosling, the twice-Oscar-nominated star of “Half Nelson,” “La La Land,” “The Notebook,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “Drive” was sent the script for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie. The film depicts Ken as pure superficiality, the acme beta man who exists only under the glow of Margot Robbie’s Barbie gaze. His platinum, almost white-bleached hair has lit up every interview, radiating the “Kenergy” he references like punctuation. Asked by one reporter how we might “find our Kenergy,” Gosling replied without missing a beat: “It’s there the whole time… Look no further. In becoming Ken, Gosling dashed one of Hollywood’s most tedious clichés, proving that it is possible to transform into a marshmallow-for-brains “himbo” without turning into an egomaniacal nightmare.

The rumor is $100 million. Still, $100 million feels about right, especially compared to what other movies spend. It's been boosted by the unexpected showdown between the pink, sparkly, sunshine Barbie movie, and the other blockbuster opening the same day — about the guy who invented the atomic bomb. Variety reports that on its opening weekend, "Barbie" is expected to take between $95 million and $110 million from ticket sales in North America alone, which would match what we assume was spent on marketing. But if "Barbie" can get that many people through the door on its opening weekend, the huge advertising push has definitely done something right.

The wildfire that destroyed Lorraine Toussaint’s house in Malibu, Calif., in November of 2018 did not leave her unsheltered — she had a rental apartment in Midtown Manhattan — but it did leave her unmoored. "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" will both be released in theaters on July 21. Warner expects the film based on the Mattel doll to take up to $80 million in its first three days. That's about double the projected box office take for Christopher Nolan's epic over the same period. For about a year, a box office battle has been brewing between "Barbie" and Oppenheimer" — the two much-anticipated films from Oscar-nominated directors that are set to be released on exactly the same day.
