CNN —An elderly man narrowly escaped with his life after a harrowing attack by a bear and her three cubs in his own home. “It’s certainly lucky we didn’t have a fatality,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer Lucas Martin said. Dating back to 1960, there have been 96 reported bear attacks on humans in the state. Experts urge different approaches during bear attacks: If a grizzly or brown bear charges, play dead, the National Park Service said. But if black bears – like the ones who entered the elderly man’s home – charge and attack, the park service warns to “fight with everything you have.”“Do not play dead.”

The silvery orb is near or at the farthest point in its orbit from our planet, so it can’t completely block the sun as it does during a total solar eclipse. Another annular solar eclipse will arrive on February 17, 2026. Finally, a total solar eclipse — such as the one that drew millions of spectators across North America last April — will once again grace the skies on August 12, 2026. To witness any of these solar eclipse events, be sure to use certified eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer to shield your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays and observe the event safely. Lost biblical tree resurrected from 1,000 year-old seed
  + stars: | 2024-10-03 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —Botanists have grown a long-lost tree species from a 1,000-year-old seed found in a cave in the Judean Desert in the 1980s. But the scientists conducting the new research weren’t able to identify the type of tree from the seed alone. However, the sample didn’t match any of the known Commiphora species in her database. The tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Yet the tree, which is related to the myrrh tree that’s famed for its resin, never gave off any kind of scent.

California is banning legacy admissions at private colleges and universities, ensuring that some of the country’s most selective schools will not favor applicants with familial or monetary connections to the schools. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed AB 1780 into law, prohibiting legacy and donor preferences in admissions at private, nonprofit institutions. Schools including Stanford University, the University of Southern California and Santa Clara University will now join the California State University system and other public institutions in the state that have long-banned legacy preferences. This is about making sure we’re leveling the playing field.”The law will affect schools with among the highest rates of legacy admissions — Stanford, USC and Santa Clara. CNN —A woman with the rare condition of two uteruses delivered twins, one from each womb, last month at a hospital in northwestern China, according to health officials and state media. According to the hospital, the new mother was born with two cervixes and two uteruses, a condition called uterine didelphys found in about 1 in 2,000 women. “That’s a miracle!” one user wrote, while another said, “How lucky she is!”. But in January, Li became pregnant again and discovered during an early ultrasound that she was expecting not just one child but twins – one in each womb. After “close and strict” medical monitoring, she “successfully” gave birth to a boy weighing 7 pounds, 19 ounces and a girl weighing 5 pounds, 30 ounces, the hospital said.

CNN —Archaeologists in Denmark have unearthed more than 50 “exceptionally well preserved” skeletons in a large Viking-era burial ground in the east of the country. The skeletons were buried alongside artifacts from far beyond Denmark’s borders, suggesting Vikings traveled extensively for trade, according to the team from the museum. The conditions at the site are what helped keep the skeletons in such good shape, he said. “We had no clue that there was going to be a burial ground with Viking skeletons there,” Lundø said.
