In my case, love of this world, love of nature, love of our life in and as part of it. New York City’s winter leaf cover has been blown away and stuffed into large, shiny, pristine black plastic bags. That’s just what I spotted in the first mile of a recent walk along Riverside Drive heading south from the 150s. It was an unseasonably warm winter, a concept that could be rendered meaningless within a decade, as memories of snowfall fade. Of course, by the time we have done so, we will be way past the point of drawing such lines in the rock.

The rise of BYD and other Chinese automakers led Tesla CEO Elon Musk in January to warn that Chinese automakers will "demolish" global rivals without trade barriers. Caresoft, an engineering benchmarking and consulting firm, has already torn down one China-built BYD Seagull and is preparing to do another. Michael Wayland / CNBCThe consulting firm tore apart the BYD Seagull piece by piece to benchmark the small EV against vehicles from other startups and traditional automakers. Its initial study of the BYD Seagull found it to be efficiently and simplistically designed, engineered and executed, but with unexpected quality and anticipated reliability. CNN —A pro-Trump lawyer who tried to overturn the 2020 election was arrested Monday after a court hearing about her recent leak of internal emails belonging to Dominion Voting Systems. In the last 24 hours, Leaf has posted more than 2,000 internal Dominion documents on his social media account. The marshals declined to say whether they arrested her, and she didn’t answer messages seeking comment after the hearing. During the at-times testy hearing Monday, Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya peppered Lambert with sharp questions about the disputed Dominion materials. The Daily Hunt for Food in GazaFor two million hungry Gazans, most days bring a difficult search for something to eat. Amany Mteir, 52, scours the streets north of Gaza City, where people sell or trade what food they have. The war, including Israel’s bombardment and siege, has choked food imports and destroyed agriculture, and nearly the entire population of Gaza relies on scant humanitarian aid to eat. Most food shops in northern Gaza are damaged or closed, so vendors set up informal street markets to sell food and other items. An average of just six commercial trucks carrying food and other supplies have been allowed to enter Gaza each day since early December.

Opinion | On the Wild Intoxications of Spring
  + stars: | 2024-03-11 | by ( Margaret Renkl | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I spied the first spring beauty of the year on Feb. 20, the same week a Northern flicker started drumming on our metal chimney, the week of budburst for our red maple sapling and our young red mulberries. The bluebirds often start house-hunting much earlier than they intend to nest, but the first flicker concert at dawn and the first spring beauty opening in the afternoon sun — they’re for real. Soon the crows will be stalking through the wild parts of the yard after a rain, collecting long, damp stalks of grass to line their nests with. This year spring beauties came a little late compared to last year (Feb. 16), but still very early compared to the year before that (March 20). Spring is here!

What’s So Funny About a Naked Man?
  + stars: | 2024-03-10 | by ( Rhonda Garelick | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
John Cena’s ‘streaker manqué” routine at the Oscars was pretty funny. And soon, an entirely naked, and remarkably buff, Mr. Cena came onstage to introduce the Best Costume Design, nervously grasping the sealed Oscar envelope over his genitals, as a makeshift fig leaf. Then, in a bit of television magic, he was draped in a toga-like, one-shouldered robe with a tasseled rope belt. An exactingly chiseled, naked male body onstage is only funny because it is unexpected — because, that is, it does not belong to a woman. Seeing a naked woman on stage at the Oscars could never be funny, simply because it’s the norm to see female bodies in various states of revealing dress on the red carpet, and in movies as well.

Wait, is America actually banning TikTok now?
  + stars: | 2024-03-08 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Washington CNN —House lawmakers are moving with dizzying speed with a plan that could ban TikTok from the United States. But could a TikTok ban really happen? A man walks past the headquarters of ByteDance, the parent company of video sharing app TikTok, in Beijing. They allege TikTok poses a national security threat because the Chinese government could use its intelligence laws against ByteDance, forcing it to hand over the data of US TikTok users. By that precedent, it would be unconstitutional for the government to ban TikTok even if it were blatantly a direct mouthpiece for the Chinese government, Jaffer said.

Costco recently started selling silver coins for the first time, finance chief Richard Galanti told CNN. Costco is trying to replicate its recent success with gold bars. It began selling $2,000 gold bars online in September and sold more than $100 million worth of the bars last quarter. After all, not many people are actually stashing away gold bars in their homes. We constantly buy that stuff and intentionally run out of it from time to time.”Costco is also selling precious metals as they become more valuable.

One Leafy Green Needs Refrigeration to Prevent E.Coli

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay ReporterHealthDayMONDAY, March 4, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- Salad lovers, take note: Lettuce is more vulnerable to E. coli contamination than other leafy greens, researchers report. Other leafy greens – spinach, kale and collards – are more resistant to E. coli, a bacteria with toxic strains that can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. On kale and collards, E. coli grows slower in warmer temperatures, but can survive longer under refrigeration, researchers found. People can protect themselves by rinsing lettuce, Dong said, although she warned that E. coli bacteria tend to attach themselves tightly to lettuce leaves. Consumers also should store their lettuce in the fridge and pay attention to any food safety recalls involving leafy greens, researchers said.

This is how collard greens have always been prepared in my family, often picked by my grandfather from his garden after carefully considering each bunch. There are few items as closely associated with a singular cuisine as collard greens are with the cuisine of Black Americans. Chef and cookbook author Adrienne Cheatham shows how to make a delicious salad using collard greens. With this wealth of health-supporting benefits, it’s a wonder collard greens don’t show up on the table more often, and in more ways. It wasn’t that long ago that kale was also relegated to preparations similar to traditional collard greens.

Dorm door decorations are emerging as the next battleground in the fight over academic freedom and free speech at Barnard College. As at many schools, Barnard students often use their dorm doors to display a bit of personality. “Zionism is terrorism,” one student’s door sticker said. Concerned that some students might feel intimidated by such messages, the Barnard administration has decided to enforce a ban on dorm door decorations altogether. Their removal was set to begin on Thursday, and all but “official items placed by the college” will be taken down, Leslie Grinage, the dean of the college, wrote in an email to students.

The announcement by the FSC highlighted steps that Korean authorities are taking to boost valuations of stock markets in Asia's fourth-largest economy. The country's stock markets are often considered undervalued by analysts, who refer to the phenomenon as the "Korea discount." The FSC said it will also introduce the "Korea Value-up Index" for institutional investors, including pension funds. "ETFs that track the Korea Value-up index will also be listed to facilitate retail investors' access to these companies," according to the statement.

Zillow determined that a family earning a median household income of $6,640 per month can expect to allocate $1,984 of that to childcare. It all adds up to a costly reality that's making the American dream of homeownership seem farther out of reach for parents than ever before. Based on the study, a new buyer household in the United States, making the median income, would spend 30% of it on housing. The upshot: Another group, less encumbered financially, appears better poised to realize the dream of homeownership: "DINKS," an acronym that stands for "dual income, no kids." WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate's border proposal was one of the toughest bipartisan bills to emerge on the issue in decades. Republicans have campaigned on border security for years, and public frustration is running high with the record number of illegal U.S. border crossings. Cruz’s likely Democratic opponent, Texas Rep. Collin Allred, said he’s already talking about the border deal on the campaign trail. Murphy agreed that Democrats should remain committed to broad immigration reforms, including pathways to citizenship for migrants who are already here. But he argued that may only be possible once Democrats first show voters they are serious about tough border enforcement.

Their Corporate Credit Fund, which trades under the ticker BCAAX for retail investors, largely focuses on high-yield bonds. The fund currently holds a little over 70% in high-yield bonds, 10% in cash and about 18% in investment-grade bonds. Another inefficiency the managers exploit is the area between low investment-grade bonds and the higher-rated high-yield market, Zox said. Investment-grade portfolio managers are shying away from the lower rated end of the investment-grade market, and high-yield managers are sticking with the higher rated end of the high-yield market, he explained. Foods made with raw milk are 50 to 160 times more likely to contain listeria, the agency said. Always carefully wash your hands after touching any type of hot dog, lunch or deli meat, the agency said. Toss opened packages of deli meats or any sliced by a deli after three to five days, and hot dogs after one week.
