This June 2024 photo provided by Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Ecosystem Conservation Office shows a rat trap that was placed under a residential building on St. Paul Island, Alaska, after a resident reported an alleged sighting. Rodents have been removed successfully from hundreds of islands worldwide — including one in Alaska’s Aleutian chain formerly known as “Rat Island,” according to the U.S. Around the developed areas of St. Paul, officials have set out blocks of wax — “chew blocks” — designed to record any telltale incisor bites. Still, it took nearly a year to catch the last known rat on St. Paul, which was believed to have hopped off a barge. The success of what was long called Rat Island, a tract in the Aleutians roughly half the size of Manhattan, shows how effective eradication programs can be.

CNN —California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday for what the state calls a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant allegedly misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling. Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California. “For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. Recent reports have shown only around 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled, a figure that’s even lower in the US, around 5 to 6%. Recycling has not kept pace with plastic production, which has doubled over the past 20 years.

Boeing on Monday sweetened its contract offer and said it was its "best and final" proposal for its more than 30,000 machinists as their strike, which has halted most of the aerospace giant's aircraft production, entered its second week. Boeing's new offer would raise general wages by 30% over four years, up from a previously proposed 25%. It also doubled the ratification bonus to $6,000, reinstated an annual machinist bonus and raised the company's 401(k) match. The labor union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, didn't immediately comment on the offer. The strike came as workers voted 94.6% against the previous proposal that the union had endorsed.

If you had as much as a spare $1 million to invest right now, what should you buy? Balanced-to-medium risk profile With as much as $1 million to invest with, investors can buy individual securities instead of being restricted to funds, said David Dietze, managing principal and senior portfolio strategist at Peapack Private Wealth Management. "A much smaller amount leaves an investor forced to invest in funds to get adequate diversification. With one million, one could say invest $20K in fifty different stocks and be well diversified," he said. More aggressive risk profile Gambles says that taking on a more aggressive stance would mean an "all in commitment" on the themes he expects will perform, and removing any hedges against those trades.

For people with non-standard speech, it can happen in nearly every interaction with this kind of technology — Israeli company Voiceitt aims to change that. By using personalized voice models, its AI-powered speech recognition system helps people with speech impairments, caused by conditions like cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s, Down Syndrome or stroke, communicate more effectively with both people and digital devices. For Voiceitt co-founder Sara Smolley, facilitating speech recognition for non-standard speech patterns is a personal mission. “By the time I was born, she had lost most of her motor capabilities, and her speech was impacted.”Voiceitt was launched as an app in 2021 and operated as a simple vocal translator, converting non-standard speech to audio. Voiceitt has developed integrations with WebEx and ChatGPT, along with a Google Chrome extension, which convert non-standard speech to captions shown on the screen.

Inselmann collected literature, data and examples of more than 4,700 Bronze Age arrowheads from Central Europe and mapped out where they came from to compare them with the Tollense Valley arrowheads. Otherwise, they would expect to find evidence of arrowheads within ceremonial burials in the region that were practiced during the Bronze Age. “This new information has considerably changed the image of the Bronze Age, which was not as peaceful as believed before,” Terberger said. It may be time to take another look at municipal bonds. These days, munis are cheap relative to corporate bonds, Bank of America said in a note Friday. "Muni weakness is not the driver here, but rather corporate richness," municipal research strategist Yingchen Li wrote. "We continue to advise investors to take positions while the muni market rally remains slow and ratios are somewhat cheap," he said. Municipal bonds have already had an "impressive" run in recent months, Haskell wrote in a note last week.
