Donald Trump can seem like a political anomaly. You sometimes hear people describe his connection with his base in quasi-mystical terms. But really, Trump is an example of an archetype — the right-wing populist showman — that recurs across time and place. And there’s a long lineage of this type in the United States too. And why does this set of qualities — ethnonationalist politics and an entertaining style — repeatedly appear at all?

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday guided investors through next week's Wall Street action, saying to pay attention to new nonfarm payroll data and Walt Disney's annual shareholder meeting, where its long and arduous proxy fight will come to a head. "Keep an eye on the employment report, because everything else that's coming next week pales in comparison — even the no-holds-barred Disney proxy fight." On Monday, Cramer expects decent earnings from PVH , an apparel maker known for brands including Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. Walt Disney 's annual shareholder meeting will take place on Wednesday, bringing an end to the company's monthslong bitter proxy fight with activist investor Nelson Peltz. On Friday, the U.S. Department of Labor will release the nonfarm payroll report, and Cramer said he's expecting strong figures.

More than two years later, only four states — Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Hawaii — have opened stations funded by the program. The Biden administration says the federal charging program is on track. The grants will fund 47 EV charging stations and related projects in 22 states and Puerto Rico, including 7,500 charging ports. But even some of the government’s own experts say 500,000 public chargers won’t be enough to meet Biden’s ambitious climate goals. The availability of charging stations is key to persuading Americans to buy EVs.

Interest in fixed income has increased over the past year after rising bond yields put them back on investors' radars. Related storiesCorporate bonds with high yields are the new darling as investors dig for returns that beat inflation, Klein said. The Bloomberg US Corporate High Yield Index, a measurement of non-investment grade bonds, has a yield to worst (a measure of the lowest possible yield) of 7.65% and a one-year total return of 12.9%. It's unusual for equities to be doing very well and high yield to be doing poorly, he added. But buyers beware: high-yield bonds are also called non-investment grade and junk bonds, and it's for good reason.

For a long time, the story about the world’s population was that it was growing too quickly. Fertility rates have declined dramatically, from about five children per woman 60 years ago to just over two today. About two-thirds of us now live in a country or area where fertility rates are below replacement level. Why, as societies get richer, do their fertility rates plummet? For a long time, a big, boisterous family has been associated with a joyful, fulfilled life.

The response from Hamas was long-awaited after discussions over a proposed six-week pause in the fighting appeared to stall. Hamas communicated their latest proposal via mediators Qatar and Egypt on Thursday, two sources familiar with the negotiations told CNN. On Friday, the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “Hamas is continuing to hold to unrealistic demands” but announced that an Israeli team would soon be traveling to Doha to further talks. The Hamas proposal included 100 prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons, the diplomat said. Even if both Hamas and Israel are participating in the talks, the two sides would not be in the same room.

Why are swipe fees in the U.S. nine times higher than they are in Europe? But these two companies control over 80 percent of the credit card market. CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris went to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Minnesota on Thursday, the first time a sitting US president or vice president is believed to visit an abortion provider. The visit was a part of Harris’ efforts to highlight an issue the campaign believes will galvanize moderate voters in November. The vice president traveled to Minnesota for the sixth stop of her “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour. The issue has been top of mind for the vice president, dating back to 2021, when she held a reproductive rights roundtable. The vice president has drawn on testimonials to underscore the impacts of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

There is a moment in the 2008 HBO movie “Recount” that illuminates an essential difference between Republicans and Democrats. Warren Christopher, a courtly former secretary of state, represents the Democratic candidate Al Gore. Democrats litigate; Republicans fight. Democrats float toward an almost helium-infused state of high-mindedness; Republicans see politics as a no-holds-barred cage match. But given the party’s recent history, the Democrats will probably need some CRISPR editing to their DNA.

So far, the Biden team has been more sure-footed attacking Donald Trump’s threat to democracy than it has been defending Biden’s incumbency. By virtually any measure save food prices, Biden is presiding over a strong economy — stronger, by far, than most peer countries. As Noah Smith has noted, the Biden economy looks far better than Ronald Reagan’s “Morning in America”: Unemployment is lower, inflation is lower, interest rates are lower, stock market returns are better. The most recent Times/Siena poll found that 74 percent of registered voters rated the economy either “poor” or “fair.” By a 15-point margin, voters said Trump’s policies helped them personally. In November of 2020, unemployment was 6.7 percent and Trump had just turned a White House celebration into a superspreader event.

Trump sees Orbán as the kind of strongman – unencumbered by legal and political restraints – that he’d like to be. Ahead of his meeting with the former president, Orbán endorsed Trump’s views on Ukraine, in what will have been music to Putin’s ears and will have added to alarm in Kyiv about what a second Trump term would mean. “It is not gambling but actually betting on the only sensible chance, that we in Hungary bet on the return of President Trump,” Orbán told an economic forum on Monday, Reuters reported. In a statement, Biden’s campaign rebuked Trump for meeting “Hungarian dictator Viktor Orbán, notorious for eroding his own country’s democracy and cozying up to Vladimir Putin (sound familiar? mary zieglerWell, I think it’s much easier to ban abortion than it is to enforce a criminal law against abortion. mary zieglerNo, I think that’s right. If our abortion politics don’t reflect our abortion views, what does that tell us about the health of the democracy? We’ve seen upwards of 10 states — I think it’s 14 or 15 that have changed their definition of abortion in abortion restrictive states since Dobbs. So, the idea is that abortions that are presented as life saving either are not abortions or are simply pretexts for abortion that’s elective.

Marilynne Robinson is one of the great living novelists. She has won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Humanities Medal, and Barack Obama took time out of his presidency to interview her at length. In recent years, Robinson has tightened the links between her literary pursuits and her Christianity, writing essays about Calvinism and other theological traditions. Her forthcoming work of nonfiction is “Reading Genesis,” a close reading of the first book of the Old Testament (or the Torah, as I grew up knowing it). No matter one’s faith, Robinson unearths wisdom in this core text that applies to many questions we wrestle with today.
