FTX sues Sam Bankman-Fried’s parents
  + stars: | 2023-09-19 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
New York CNN —Bankrupt crypto exchange FTX is suing founder Sam Bankman-Fried’s parents, accusing them of siphoning millions of dollars in company funds to enrich themselves and their “pet causes.”The lawsuit aims to recover funds that the company claims were “fraudulently transferred and misappropriated” by Bankman-Fried’s parents. FTX collapsed into bankruptcy in November last year as questions about its finances rattled crypto markets and prompted a sudden, massive drawdown of customer funds. Despite Bankman-Fried’s assertions that his parents weren’t involved in “any of the relevant parts” of FTX, the lawsuit claims that his parents played a role from the beginning. She described herself as her son’s “partner in crime of the noncriminal sort,” the lawsuit claims. In April, FTX told the bankruptcy court it had recovered $7.3 billion in assets.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A group photo of about two dozen law officers in tactical gear posing with escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante minutes after his capture Wednesday in southeastern Pennsylvania drew criticism from policing reform advocates and some members of the public. Policing experts said the celebratory moment after the grueling 14-day search for the armed suspect was inappropriate and dehumanizing. Photos of Cavalcante immediately after being arrested, with the police dog pinning him down, circulated widely on social media Wednesday in the hours after the arrest was announced. The photos did not include information about who took them, but they were taken inside the secured perimeter where only law enforcement officers were allowed. If I was on the scene as the public affairs officer representing a law enforcement agency, I would have discouraged it.”

For an instant, standing on the running board of the motorcade car, he entertained the vain hope that maybe it was just a firecracker or a blown tire. But he knew guns and he knew better. Mr. Landis has spent most of the intervening years fleeing history, trying to forget that unforgettable moment etched in the consciousness of a grieving nation. And he realized that what he read was not quite right, not as he remembered it. Rep. John James wants to bar anyone over the age of 75 from serving in Congress or the White House. But James has endorsed Trump, who's currently 77, despite once saying he's "not fit to lead." The second is that James has endorsed former President Donald Trump — who is currently 77 years old and would be 82 by the end of a second term — for president in 2024. AdvertisementAdvertisementAsk by Fox News about how the age limits proposal would pertain to Trump, James reportedly dodged the question, pointing out that the proposal would take years to enact. "You can't watch a video of Feinstein or McConnell or Biden and tell me that everything's OK," James told Fox News.

In seeking the rematch with James in the suburban district north of Detroit, Marlinga is hoping to extend his party's recent winning streak in Michigan. A former Macomb County judge and prosecutor, Marlinga beat out four other Democrats last year to win the party's nomination. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign arm of House Democrats, has said the district is one of 31 GOP-held seats they will “aggressively target” in 2024. Last year, Democrats swept statewide races, flipped the state House and Senate and won three of four U.S. House races that were expected to be competitive. James lost U.S. Senate races in 2018 and 2020 before narrowly winning the House race while holding significant advantages in name recognition and fundraising.

They are buoyed by experts who say the arsenic risk is overblown, the mounts nothing short of art. The Endangered Species Act protects animals even in death, so the collection can’t be sold. But by the time he died in 1978, international laws and the Endangered Species Act were cracking down. In August, the results came back: 79% of specimens tested positive for detectable levels of arsenic, the city said. With protective gear, taxidermy can be moved safely despite arsenic, said Jennifer Menken, the public collections manager at the Bell Museum of Natural History.

One problem: Voters aren't buying it. The lyrics of the 1981 song “Red Barchetta” by the Canadian rock band Rush describe the thrill of racing a vintage roadster in a future when driving is illegal. “I commit my weekly crime,” sings vocalist Geddy Lee , in an era governed by “the motor law” and policed by “a gleaming alloy air car.” That dystopian vision seems a faraway fantasy, but motorists in Michigan may think of it when they learn about a state plan to use Global Positioning System devices to track mileage and tax drivers based on road usage.

Shares of Novavax jumped as much as 20% in premarket trading Tuesday after the Covid vaccine maker reported a surprise second-quarter profit. Here's what Novavax reported compared with Wall Street's expectations, based on a survey of analysts by Refinitiv. That compares with a net loss of $510.5 million, or $6.53 per share, reported during the same quarter last year. But Jacobs noted that the adjustment reflects part of a cash settlement the Canadian government agreed to pay for forfeiting Covid vaccine doses that were previously scheduled for delivery. The company reported R&D expenses of $258 million and SG&A expenses of $162 million last year.

The recession caused by the Covid-19 pandemic was the shortest on record, thanks to rapid, robust and bipartisan congressional action. Americans were made whole by their government, which staved off what otherwise would have been mass financial suffering. But by the time Dr. Shaefer testified, inflation had begun to rise, sucking all the air out of the room. Inflation hawks blamed the pandemic response for driving up consumer demand, which, in their telling, drove up prices, causing pain for many people as the cost of food, rent and other necessities rose. The fracas over inflation risks memory-holing the concrete proof that the federal government is fully capable of keeping Americans afloat when the economy sinks.
