And while the super PAC Maga Inc. has refunded nearly all of that money, that’s money that could have been used for Trump’s campaign. The CEO of the Chubb insurance company on Wednesday defended providing former President Donald Trump with a $91.6 million appeal bond in the civil case where he was found liable for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll after she accused him of rape. "When Chubb issues an appeal bond, it isn't making judgments about the claims, even when the claims involve alleged reprehensible conduct," Greenberg wrote in the letter, which was obtained by CNBC. "It would be wrong for us to do so and we are in no way supporting the defendant. We are supporting and are part of the justice system plumbing included in this case." Donald Trump on Monday once again denied writer E. Jean Carroll's rape and defamation claims against him, despite facing nearly $90 million in civil penalties over similar denials. Carroll sued Trump in New York federal court for defaming her, after he denied the rape claim and accused her of trying to sell books. In 2022, Carroll sued Trump a second time for battery and defamation relating to the alleged rape and a subsequent denial after he left the White House. A federal civil jury last May awarded Carroll $5 million in damages in that case after finding Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. In January, another federal civil jury in Manhattan ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million for defaming Carroll through the statements he made as president.

Jean Carroll, her lawyer on Monday suggested she was considering filing yet another defamation lawsuit against the former president. The lawyer raised the prospect of a new lawsuit after Mr. Trump in recent days repeatedly lashed out at Ms. Carroll, using the same kind of disparaging language that led to the huge judgment against him in January. “The statute of limitations for defamation in most jurisdictions is between one and three years,” Roberta A. Kaplan, Ms. Carroll’s lawyer, said in a statement Monday morning. “As we said after the last jury verdict, we continue to monitor every statement that Donald Trump makes about our client.”In a separate court filing, Ms. Kaplan told the federal judge overseeing the case that she and Mr. Trump’s lawyers had reached an agreement on the details of his proposed $91.6 million bond.
