The number of E. coli cases linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has risen to 90, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday, up from 75 reported cases last Friday. The slivered onions used on the burgers are the “likely source” of the outbreak, the CDC said. The true number of cases linked to the Quarter Pounders is likely much higher than the 90 reported so far. Thirteen states have reported cases: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. A pig in Oregon has tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus, the Agriculture Department said Wednesday. The update comes as the H5N1 virus continues to spread rapidly among dairy cows across the country. The bird flu outbreak in dairy cows has infected 387 herds across 14 states so far, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last week, the CDC released results of a monthslong investigation that found no evidence of bird flu spreading from human to human. It's unclear how the pig in Oregon was exposed to bird flu, although earlier this month state officials detected the virus in poultry on the farm.

Kendra Panteah, 37, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of kidnapping not resulting in death in federal court in Albuquerque, according to court records. Another man, Gilbert John Jr., fatally stabbed the victim, the prosecutor's office said. Panteah said the two other people got out as she drove to Gallup with the man still locked in the trunk, according to the plea agreement. They stopped at Bass Lake, which is where the victim began breaking out of the trunk and John stabbed him repeatedly with a machete, Panteah and prosecutors said. He and Panteah sat on the trunk of the car until the victim stopped moving, according to Panteah's plea agreement.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a long-shot bid by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who ended his independent presidential campaign, to remove his name from the ballot in the key swing states of Wisconsin and Michigan. Voting is already underway in both states, so it never seemed likely the Supreme Court would grant Kennedy's requests. The Wisconsin Supreme Court and the Michigan Supreme Court both ruled against Kennedy last month. Kennedy has not sought to remove himself from the ballot in all states. In fact, in New York he tried to have his name added to the ballot in a bid to frustrate Democrats, a move the Supreme Court rejected in September.
