Long before the pandemic, Nicholas Bloom, a Stanford economics professor, was already studying the most effective work-from-home policies. So, armed with decades worth of research and thousands of pandemic-era interviews, what's the one prediction Bloom says it would've been "horrifying" to get wrong about 2022? With a year's hindsight and additional research, Bloom says this prediction has largely borne out, noting that it felt particularly easy to predict by the end of 2021. In it, he advocated for employee choice with regards to what days of the week they'd work in the office. "There's this famous saying that people overestimate technology in the short run, and underestimate it in the long run," Bloom adds.
The NRA vs. the Censorship ‘Mob’

It’s the classic threat of B-movie mobsters: Nice business you got there, it’d be a shame if something happened to it. Government shouldn’t operate like that, but it too often does, sometimes to evade the Constitution’s limits on its power. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the practice and provided a road map for officials to circumvent the First Amendment’s protection for freedom of speech. Maria Vullo led the New York State Department of Financial Services, which has broad power to regulate almost every major financial player in the U.S. After the February 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., Ms. Vullo and then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a press release stating that the department would “urge” the insurers, banks and companies it regulates “to review any relationships they may have with the National Rifle Association” for “reputational risk.”
I had no intention of watching the Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan,” the first three episodes of which dropped Dec. 8. I want to admire Harry and Meghan. The fact is, I’ve always liked Meghan and Harry. I’m not sure if the point of “Harry & Meghan” was to make people feel sorry for them, but that’s certainly one of the messages I got, and I found it cringeworthy. I want to admire Harry and Meghan.
Suicide prevention: Signs, risk factors and how to help

CNN —Suicide is a leading cause of death among children and adults, but spotting risk factors and warning signs isn’t easy. Here are some of the most common behavioral, verbal and emotional signs and risk factors you should pay attention to, according to experts. Mood and other risk factorsPsychological factors, distressing situations or genetics can increase the likelihood of someone considering, attempting or dying by suicide, according to SAMHSA. These risk factors can’t cause or predict a suicide attempt, but being aware of them is important, according to SAMHSA:Hopelessness. “You’re not going to cause someone to be suicidal by asking directly about suicide,” Baker said.
“The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex,” White said. “I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at ‘White Lotus.’” (Season 1 of the show took place in Hawaii, followed by this season’s bawdy action set in Sicily.) That’s not the only clue White has dropped for the next season of “Lotus,” which already jumped halfway around the world once, from the Pacific to the Mediterranean. You know, we did Europe, and maybe Asia, something crazy like that, that would be fun,” White told Deadline in October, going on to mention Japan as a potential contender for the setting of the third ritzy White Lotus resort.
Premiering Sunday on Hallmark, “The Holiday Sitter” follows Sam (Jonathan Bennett), a workaholic bachelor who reluctantly agrees to babysit his niece and nephew before his solo vacation. Jonathan Bennett, left, George Krissa and Mila Morgan in "The Holiday Sitter." Bennett, as an executive producer, originally came up with the idea of a “gay ‘Uncle Buck’ for Hallmark” on the set of another holiday movie three years ago. “We both love the Christmas holiday. After watching “The Holiday Sitter," people are “going to feel that the Hallmark holiday table is bigger than ever,” Bennett added, "and that no matter who you are, there is a seat for you."
If Twitter Crumbles, Will We Go Back to Talking in Real Life?

Once upon a time, if you had a snarky or clever observation to make while watching a major national event like the Academy Awards, a political debate or a sad Detroit Lions turkey bowl, you could really only tell it in person, to whatever fools were stuck sitting with you, in real time. You’d say your snarky or clever thing about the Oscars, the debate or the Lions to a couple of buddies on the couch, and hope for a laugh (you quickly learned the difference between a genuine laugh and a charity guffaw). Maybe you’d be with your family, and you’d chase their approval, too. Maybe it’d be just you and the cat. Maybe it’d just be you, since the cat was outside, smoking a Merit.
And Black women are often in their late 30s or early 40s when they start, older on average than white women. Black women are also twice as likely as white women to have fertility challenges, according to a 2008 study in Fertility and Sterility. He suggested that insurance coverage, awareness of the “biological clock” and partners’ attitudes toward fertility treatment may all play a role. Regina Townsend via Broken Brown Egg‘The myth assigned to us’National data identifying racial disparities in fertility care only recently became available when Seifer published his 2007 study. Doctors’ lack of knowledge about racial disparities in fertility treatment doesn’t surprise Townsend.
But after his 19% margin win on Tuesday over Democrat Charlie Crist, DeSantis may in fact be the Republican Party’s savior. Somebody needs to deliver the GOP from Trump, and from that victory margin to his polling ahead of the former president, signs point to DeSantis as The One. The cheeky right-aligned New York Post on Wednesday ran a “DeFuture” cover of the DeSantis family (“Young GOP star DeSantis romps to victory in Florida”). Trump versus DeSantis is a fight between two men with messiah complexes who want us to believe each is the leader America needs. Could DeSantis win a national election?

Why Wall Street shouldn’t sweat the midterms

New York CNN Business —The midterm elections are a little more than a month away, and if Wall Street had a vote, it’d be for more gridlock. Just a few months ago, many political observers and Wall Street experts were predicting that the GOP would gain control of the Senate and possibly even the House. The conventional wisdom on Wall Street is that the market prefers when politicians bicker and little actually gets done. Clifton also pointed out that “there were two notable exceptions” to the usual midterm market moves: 1974 and 1978. The Fed’s next scheduled meeting is on November 2, just six days before the midterms.
Glen Morgan speaks about his canvassing organization, the Washington Voter Research Project. The Washington Voter Research Project maintains that these claims have no basis in fact. In January, the Washington Voter Research Project began releasing some of its canvassing efforts’ findings online, claiming it had found several anomalies in voter rolls. The resident said that, upon being pressed, the canvassers eventually said they were with the Washington Voter Research Project. “We have these volunteer badges that just say volunteer and they say Washington voter research project on them.
