Looking at the recent performance of the market and several stocks in our portfolio, one thing is clear: This is a market that wants to go higher. We would much rather see stocks up on strong earnings instead of rising on lower rates that are only lower because the operating environment is deteriorating. But it's important to understand, at a high level, what kind of market we are still in — a bull market seeking new heights. We are fielding a lot of questions about how one should approach a market near all-time highs. Now, that doesn't mean stocks are on a one-way march higher and a pullback is impossible.

If you had a spare $1 million to invest right now, what should you buy? He would allocate roughly 60% into stocks this way: 15% each to U.S. large-cap growth stocks and U.S. large-cap value stocks; 4% to small-caps; and 8% to mid-caps. "We really believe in style diversification and feel that remaining diversified with value and growth stocks remains prudent," Benson said. With a million dollars to invest, it would be "reasonable" for investors to put their money in both small- and mid-cap stocks now, he said. The average amount of money that his clients invest is $1.3 million, and his firm manages over $1.2 billion.

"And I sort of look at the stock market right now as that clown of the circus blowing up the balloon." That earnings multiple is based on future earnings prospects, the economy, and interest rates. When the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates and the yield curve steepens, he said big banks should bring opportunities. "There will be areas to dip your toes in, but not for the overall market," Rosenberg said. He's bullish on long-term bonds and gold as the Fed cuts interest rates.

The four-year total return for the S & P 500 since March 23, 2020, is just about 150%, or 25.7% annualized. .SPX mountain 2020-03-23 S & P 500 since the Covid low This is, of course, an idealized starting point from which to measure performance. While the S & P 500 bottomed at around a three-year low under 2,200, the index spent only a few weeks under 2,500. More qualitatively, it's a bull market, and in a bull market the overshoots occur to the upside, so a rally being "ahead of itself" is not fatal. And the S & P 500 is only 9% higher than it was more than two years ago, hardly reaching escape velocity from planet Sanity.

Please note, that Abbott Laboratories is not listed below as we did not own the name before the company's earnings release. Meta Platforms had one of the best earnings reports of the entire season, as sales, earnings, and cash flow trounced expectations. Despite missing earnings expectations, Coterra Energy delivered where it matters most: discretionary and free cash flow. Honeywell 's earnings results weren't great, with sales missing across the board and segment profit results coming up mixed. Given the stock's reaction, one might wonder why we don't think the earnings results from Palo Alto Networks were flat-out ugly.

Investors should disregard concerns over high valuations and focus on growth in what is now a "stockpicker's market," according to Matt Orton, chief market strategist at Raymond James Investment Management. The S&P 500 closed out a two-week losing streak on Friday, but Orton told CNBC that stock market gains are broadening and brief pullbacks should be used "opportunistically." Much of the significant rally over the last 18 months has been driven by the so-called "Magnificent 7" megacap tech stocks, but they have begun to diverge. "We're back to a stockpicker's market – idiosyncratic risk is finally being rewarded again and that, to me, is most important. It means that you have the opportunity to diversify your portfolio and actually lean into what works and lean out of what's not," Orton told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Monday.

Wall Street was mostly upbeat about equities heading into 2023, though even the most bullish investment firms thought the S&P 500 would finish this year at 5,100 — a level it has exceeded already. Resisting this rally is a fool's errand, according to David Keller, the chief market strategist at StockCharts.com. The long-time chartmaster warned of a near-term pullback as the S&P 500 approached its previous record high but has since abandoned his cautious call. Tengler named several attractively valued stocks she called the "picks and shovels" of AI, including Emerson Electric , L3Harris Technologies , Visa , Walmart and McDonald's . These companies are expected to boast continued strong growth and stock performance, aided by AI, she said. "Generative AI is much more compelling of a story than then the internet was in many ways," in terms of fueling productivity and growth, Tengler said. Walmart, another of Tengler's top "old economy" AI plays, has gained 14.4% so far this year, double the broader market. The sheer persistence of the equity rally, with the S & P 500 up 16 of 18 weeks and refusing to succumb to supposed late-February seasonal weakness, has converted the cautious. Still, by some lights, stocks' valuation is one of the better sentiment indicators, and by that measure the investment community is pretty enthusiastic.
