CNN —A passenger plane carrying 61 people crashed outside São Paulo on Friday afternoon, killing everyone on board, according to a statement issued by airline Voepass. All of the passengers had Brazilian documents, airline officials said, though it’s not yet clear if any had dual citizenship. A plane is seen falling out of the sky into the city of Vinhedo, Brazil, on August 9, 2024. A man who missed the flight told Brazilian news outlet Globo that at least 10 people were waiting at the wrong gate and missed the flight before it took off. When they realized they were at the wrong gate, the passengers begged the airport employees to let them board the plane but were told they could not.

I loved the luxurious vibes in St. Barts. When I wasn't window shopping or out on the water, I was lounging on the beach in St. Barts. But you don't have to be a multimillionaire to soak in the island's beguiling swankiness. During my visit, I spent an afternoon on a catamaran ride and did some window shopping at the home-design store Maison Pélican. It’s called a sector rotation, and it happens all the time as part of the natural course of a business cycle. The US economy is still pretty strong, growing at an annualized rate close to 3% in the most recent quarter. But it’s not as if Americans have stopped going to restaurants — they’re just being a bit more discerning when they do. Instead, they’re going to Texas Roadhouse, where they can sit down and have some service with their meal. Or they’re swinging through Chipotle, which saw sales shoot up 11% last quarter at stores open at least a year.

This escalated into days of riots in the U.K. that saw attacks on mosques, immigration centers and hotels that house asylum seekers. The disinformation circulated online tapped into pre-existing biases and prejudice, Ondrak explained, adding that incorrect reports often thrive at times of heightened emotions. Many of the right-wing protestors claim the high number of migrants in the U.K. fuels crime and violence. Ondrak also noted that many groups that had previously circulated false information about the attack had started walking it back, saying it was a hoax. On Wednesday, the U.K. media regulator Ofcom issued a letter to social media platforms saying they shouldn't wait for the new law to come into force.

On Monday, July 22, Delta canceled more than 1,250 flights — making up nearly 70% of all domestic cancellations, the lawsuit said. Both companies claimed Delta ignored their repeated offers for help as passengers were left stranded in airports across the country.

Disney may have a parks problem

New York CNN —Disney Parks are the latest business to face slowing consumer demand in the face of higher prices. Disney’s parks business underperformed expectations and profit fell somewhat last quarter. It’s not just Disney that’s seeing a pullback — Bank of America Institute reported credit card transactions on travel ticked down in June. Disney’s domestic parks and international parks and cruises, though, are seeing different results: Disney’s international parks had increases in attendance and more rooms booked. The company noted that attendance at the parks was comparable to this time last year and spending per guest was up.

Violence broke out in several towns and cities across the country after three young girls were killed in a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party in the seaside town of Southport in northwest England last week. Amid false rumors that the suspect was a Muslim asylum seeker, mobs have since attacked hotels housing asylum seekers, as well as mosques, leading to hundreds of arrests. The suspect Axel Rudakubana, 17, was born in the Welsh capital of Cardiff and had lived for years in a village near Southport itself, police saidMusk's remarks were quickly rebuffed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office, which said in a statement that such comments had “no justification.”In a separate video message posted to X, Starmer said: “Whatever the apparent motivation, this is not protest. This month, he said he was pulling his businesses out of California to protest a new state law that bars schools from requiring that trans kids be outed to their parents. The U.K. riots have become one of the first major challenges for Starmer, whose center-left Labour Party took power last month in a landslide election victory, ousting the Conservative Party, who after 14 years in government left office without dispute.

London CNN —Social media has played a big role in fueling the anti-immigration riots engulfing towns and cities in the United Kingdom. Musk later apologized for what he called his “dumbest” ever social media post. The UK government this week vowed to prosecute “online criminality” and has pushed social media companies to take action against the spread of false information. “Social media has put rocket boosters under… not just the misinformation but the encouragement of violence,” UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said Monday. It is unclear that the UK government has the tools to hold social media platforms accountable for their role in the riots.

Several passers-by referenced unfounded rumors that hotel residents have abused local women. CNN asked South Yorkshire police if they have received complaints about the behavior of the hotel residents, but have not yet received a response. LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer convened an emergency security meeting Monday after far-right riots spread over the weekend, and residents of villages, towns and cities across the country woke up to scenes of buildings set on fire and asylum seeker hotels stormed by angry mobs. Nearly 150 people were arrested over the weekend, U.K.’s National Police Chiefs’ Council said Sunday. False rumors about the suspect quickly spread online, fueling an outburst of violence. On Sunday, two hotels where asylum seekers are believed to be living, were targeted by mobs in what has turned into the worst disorder the U.K. has seen in years. The South Yorkshire police, where Rotherham is, later said its officers were also targeted with glass bottles and beer cans by a crowd of about 700 people.

UK's Starmer to hold emergency meeting as riots intensify

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will hold an emergency meeting with police chiefs on Monday after days of violent anti-immigration protests intensified, with buildings and vehicles torched and hotels holding asylum seekers targeted. Riots have erupted across towns and cities in the last week after three girls were killed in a knife attack in Southport in northwest England, with 420 people arrested so far. Police have said the suspect was born in Britain and are not treating it as a terrorist incident. Interior minister Yvette Cooper said rioters had felt "emboldened by this moment to stir up racial hatred", with bricks thrown at police officers, shops looted and mosques and Asian-owned businesses attacked. In Rotherham, northern England, protesters sought to break into a hotel that housed asylum seekers.

London CNN —Far-right riots swept Britain over the weekend, with outbreaks of anti-immigrant violence in a number of cities and towns, leaving the new UK government scrambling to control the worst disorder in more than a decade. Throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday, violent protesters congregated in city and town centers across the UK, many of them apparently intent on clashing with police and causing havoc. The gatherings ostensibly started as anti-immigration marches, organized on social media platforms like X and on WhatsApp and Telegram groups. Violence also took place in Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Stoke-on-Trent and several more cities, mostly across the Midlands and north of England. The man in charge of bringing those offenders to justice was Keir Starmer, then Britain’s Director of Public Prosecutions.
