Representative to the United States, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office T.H. Lai, vice president and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) presidential candidate, has led in most opinion polls ahead of the election, which is taking place as Taiwan comes under increased pressure from China to accept its sovereignty claim. The United States, as with most countries, has no formal ties with Taiwan, but is the island's most important international supporter and arms supplier. 'INDEPENDENCE ACT'Like Lai, Hsiao is despised by China, which has twice placed sanctions on her, most recently in April, saying she was an "independence diehard". The DPP's smooth handling of its vice presidential nominee stands in contrast with efforts by Taiwan's two main opposition parties to agree on a joint ticket.

In a post on his Facebook page, Lai said he would formally present Hsiao as his running mate on Monday afternoon. In the 16 months since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, six states have held direct votes on the future of abortion rights within their borders. And on six occasions, the pro-abortion rights side has prevailed — including in traditionally conservative states like Kentucky. Virginia: “There’s not like a referendum question on the ballot, but it is on the ballot,” Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine told CNN after a backyard rally for Democratic state legislative candidates in September. Though Virginia is now reliably blue in presidential races, its local races are a fierce battleground. Virginia’s off-off-year local elections — held a year after federal midterm elections and featuring no statewide contests — are famously difficult to predict.

Bryant West was halfway through high school in Pascagoula, Mississippi, when he dropped out in 2020. But in every state reporting high school graduation rates by gender, research shows female students graduate at higher rates. “I was lashing out because I wasn’t OK,” said Nichols, who ended up leaving high school after ninth grade. Still, the urban district posted a 10-point graduation gender gap in 2022 (84%-74%) and an 11-point gap (84%-73%) in 2021. The graduation gender gap “is harder to explain than some of the other disparities we see,” PRB’s Jarosz said.

Here are key things to know about how Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted as House speaker:What happened to McCarthy? McCarthy had been House speaker since January, when he won the gavel after 15 rounds of balloting. Many House Republicans who share some of these ideological views, however, continued to support McCarthy. So many Democrats felt like they didn’t owe him anything, even if a future GOP speaker could be more conservative than McCarthy. Only four Republicans can break with the pack in order for a GOP speaker to be seated.

The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt is still closed, leaving humanitarian supplies piling up on the Egyptian side of the border. But, Israel has closed its two border crossings with Gaza and imposed a “complete siege” of the territory. That has left the Rafah crossing as the only viable outlet to get people out of the enclave – and supplies into it. Also complicating matters: border authorities have not managed to repair Israeli airstrike damage to the Gaza side of the Rafah border crossing, a Palestinian official said. Abu Obaida claimed 22 of the hostages in Gaza were killed in Israeli airstrikes (CNN cannot independently verify that claim).

A specialist works at the site of a crash of the private jet linked to Yevgeny Prigozhin in the Tver region, Russia, on August 24. "There was no external influence on the plane; it is an established fact," the Russian leader claimed. The mutiny was suddenly called off in a deal that required the Wagner chief and his fighters to relocate to Belarus. There is no concrete evidence that points to Kremlin involvement and, officially, the cause of the crash is unknown. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials and US President Joe Biden have suggested Putin may have been behind the crash.

Law enforcement investigations and criminal prosecutions will continue “without interruption,” the plan says, and prisons will remain staffed. Special counsels are instead funded by “the permanent, indefinite appropriation for independent counsels,” according to their expenditure reports. Civil litigation in lower federal courts will be “curtailed or postponed,” according to the Justice Department contingency plan. A shutdown also could affect state and local efforts to address violent crime, Monaco said. During a hearing on Capitol Hill last week, Attorney General Merrick Garland said that a shutdown would “certainly disrupt” programs like “our grant programs to state and local law enforcement.”

Kevin Dietsch/Getty ImagesHouse Republicans are taking their next official steps in their impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden by preparing a hearing and subpoenas to members of the Biden family, as well as scheduling the first hearing in the investigation for September 28. A committee spokesperson told CNN that the hearing will focus on the constitutional and legal questions Republicans are raising about Biden. “It’s an informative hearing where we’re going to have some experts in different areas of the law that can answer questions pertaining to specific crimes, as well as to educate and inform exactly what an impeachment inquiry is, and why you do an impeachment inquiry,” Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, told CNN. The subpoenas are the first direct outreach to members of the Biden family and are expected to be for their personal and business records. Republicans have made Hunter Biden’s business dealings a central component of their impeachment inquiry, but there is no public evidence to date that the president personally received any money.

ImageWanderingDear Diary:I was wandering through Greenwich Village on a spring day, admiring the brownstones as well as the daffodils that were beginning to emerge from the earth. I noticed a man and a woman walking toward each other in opposite directions. Moments later, I saw the man look back over his shoulder for one more glimpse of the woman. They missed each other’s second glances by a matter of seconds, and to this day, I wonder what might have happened if they had looked back at the same time. I like to imagine that they now stroll through that neighborhood hand in hand, walking in the same direction.

As part of her request, Willis noted that one of the defendants, Kenneth Chesebro, sought a quick trial under Georgia’s Speedy Trial Act. Late Friday, another defendant, attorney Sidney Powell, also requested a speedy trial, according to a new filing. How does Georgia’s speedy trial law work? Under Georgia law, any criminal defendant has the right to demand a trial within weeks of being indicted. Lawyers for Trump told the judge that they oppose the proposed October 23 trial date, and will attempt to separate his Georgia case from Chesebro, who wanted to speed up the trial date.

So far this year, AI beneficiaries, mainly the mega-cap tech stocks, have contributed to much of the S&P 500's gains. The U.K. has faced criticisms from some in the industry that it is posing barriers to its fintech entrepreneurs and forcing them to consider listings overseas. The U.K. has created an investment vehicle to back growth-stage financial technology companies until they can go public, in a bid to bolster Britain's global image as a fintech investment hub. It marks a rare commitment to a specialized fund focused on fintech backed by mega-industry players. While fintech-focused funds like Augmentum Fintech and Anthemis Group exist, the U.K. has yet to see a fintech-oriented fund that came about from a government-led strategy. The fund also counts Philip Hammond, the former U.K. finance minister, as an advisor.

Ukraine’s National Resistance Center — an official body — claimed Tuesday that the construction of another camp to host Wagner Group fighters has begun in the Zyabrovka Air Base in Belarus. “On the border with Ukraine, in the village of Zyabrovka in the Republic of Belarus, a new camp for 'Wagner' PMC mercenaries is being built,” the center said on its website. Zyabrovka is located near Gomel in southeastern Belarus, about 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine's Chernihiv region. The camp can house around 1,000 personnel, the center said, and it looks like a tent city. Trump’s attorneys, including Todd Blanche, received the target letter from Smith’s team informing them that their client could face charges in the investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election, two sources familiar with what happened tell CNN. A target letter from federal prosecutors to Trump makes clear that prosecutors are focused on the former president’s actions in the investigation into overturning the 2020 election – and not just of those around him who tried to stop his election loss. The target letter cites three statutes that Trump could be charged with, according to multiple news outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, that cited a person familiar with the matter. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged the former president with falsifying business records in March, and Smith charged Trump in the classified documents investigation last month.
