Auto regulators ordered Tesla to hand over data about a hidden Autopilot mode that lets drivers stay hands-free. It reportedly removes a prompt telling drivers to put their hands on the wheel, and was discovered by a software hacker. Typically, if a driver using Tesla's Autopilot or Full Self-Driving feature takes their hands off the wheel, a visual symbol blinks on the car's touch screen. Tesla's manual says that, when using Autopilot, drivers should "keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times." AdvertisementAdvertisementElon Musk said last December that a software update would let some Tesla drivers disable the "nag," but that hasn't yet been implemented.

The researchers behind the SemiAnalysis blog say Google's upcoming AI Gemini smashes GPT-4. That might explain OpenAI boss Sam Altman's defensive response to a post published over the weekend titled : "Google Gemini Eats The World – Gemini Smashes GPT-4 By 5X, The GPU-Poors." Gemini is a next-gen, multimodal AI model being worked on by researchers at Google's AI arm DeepMind, and is expected to be released later in 2023. In response, SemiAnalysis' Patel posted on X that he got data on Google's GPU stores from a supplier of Google — rather than Google itself. But to say Gemini Smashes GPT-4 by 5x makes it sound like it is 5x better than GPT-4, it's not, its 5x compute.

CNN —Iraqi authorities have switched off electronic advertising boards in Baghdad after pornographic footage was broadcast on one of the screens. A man has now been arrested by the police after the x-rated material was broadcast to passers-by in the capital, local media reported. Over the past year, the government has also cracked down on social media influencers. A platform called “Report” was launched this year to allow citizens to anonymously report “negative” or “immoral” content seen online. Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro talks with media upon his arrival at Brasilia International Airport, Brazil June 30, 2023. A congressional inquiry surrounding those riots, along with police investigations overseen by the Supreme Court, have steadily deepened Bolsonaro's legal exposure since he begrudgingly left office. The Supreme Court declined to comment. The police access to the Bolsonaros' phone and bank records capped a day of setbacks for the former president. Later on Thursday, news magazine Veja reported that Bolsonaro's former right-hand man Mauro Cid planned to confess his involvement in crimes related to the alleged sale of jewelry gifted by foreign governments.

CNN —A Brazilian hacker said Thursday that former President Jair Bolsonaro asked him if he could hack into voting machines, according to his testimony to a congressional inquiry set up to investigate Brazil’s election results and the storming of governmental buildings on January 8, 2023. Walter Delgatti Neto’s told the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) that during an August 2022 meeting with Bolsonaro, the former president offered to pardon the hacker if he suffered any legal consequences. Bolsonaro’s defense team denied allegations of wiretapping or illegal activity against any political entity in Brazil following Delgatti’s testimony. “I don’t know anyone who had an individual meeting with the president that last an hour and a half. Elon Musk's X appeared to throttle access to some websites that its billionaire owner has previously insulted and then resolved the issue after reports came out on Tuesday. The Washington Post reported that links to Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and Substack were also delayed. While live-in landlords are far from a novel concept, the pandemic-era fever around passive income and real-estate investing has sparked a rise in the popularity of house hacking. While Turner's initial strategy emphasized small multifamily buildings, some house hackers applied the concept to single-family homes. In 2019, he published a book called "The House Hacking Strategy: How to Use Your Home to Achieve Financial Freedom." However, the delays affected the sites for rival platforms, as well as news outlets that Twitter owner Elon Musk has previously criticized. Will Dormann, a cybersecurity researcher, plugged the New York Times website into a basic command program on his Mac and compared the loading time for that website with that of a dummy website. The load time for the New York Times site was about 4.5 seconds longer, Dormann told CNN Tuesday. Zoom angered users after its terms of service suggested it could use calls to train AI. Zoom also says it won't use the content of calls to train its AI models "without your consent." On August 6, the tech news blog Stack Diary pointed out the section of Zoom's terms of service. But as Stack Diary points out, the clarification may not fully protect your calls, based on the specific language in Zoom's terms of service. The clarifications in Zoom's terms of service come as members of the public have expressed outrage over their data being used to train AI.

His wife Heather Morgan, who used the hip-hop alias "Razzklekhan" to promote her music, is expected to enter her own plea later on Thursday. Lichtenstein and Morgan had been arrested in February 2022 on charges of laundering more than 100,000 bitcoin that was stolen after a hacker attacked Bitfinex in 2016. A docket entry in late July shows that Lichtenstein and Morgan reached their plea deal with the U.S. Attorney's office in Washington.

Ether , which has joined bitcoin in recent months as a sort of large cap, blue-chip trade in crypto, was down by 1.4%, after finishing July down by 3.35%. It was under extra pressure due to a recent exploit in DeFi giant Curve, however. Russian hackers crash Italian bank websites - cyber agency

ROME, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Italy's cyber security agency on Tuesday said it had detected hacker attacks against websites of at least five banks, which temporarily made it impossible to access some of their services. A spokesperson for the agency told Reuters that targeted banks included Intesa Sanpaolo (ISP.MI), Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS.MI) and BPER Banca (EMII.MI), along with FinecoBank (FBK.MI) and Banca Popolare di Sondrio (BPSI.MI). The agency "identified the reactivation of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack campaigns by pro-Russian ... groups against national institutional subjects," a statement said. In DDoS attacks, hackers attempt to flood a network with unusually high volumes of data traffic in order to paralyse it. The agency said it provided swift assistance to the firms targeted by attacks from activists in the Noname057(16) group in order to mitigate any impact.

The strange, improbable rise of Mark Zuckerberg 3.0

In early July, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the latest and perhaps most consequential product in Meta's history: a new model of Mark Zuckerberg. Silicon Valley Zuck was a husband and father with a legacy to build and protect at all costs. Silicon Valley Zuck was suddenly faced with something he'd never dealt with before, shrinking revenue. Still clinging to his persona as Silicon Valley Zuck, Zuckerberg engaged in an all-out media blitz to hawk his vision for the metaverse.
