A muse to the designer Jean Patou, Lenglen became tennis’ first fashion icon with her signature headscarf and then-shocking shorter hems. Anne White was banned from wearing a white catsuit at Wimbledon four decades before Serena Williams caused a stir with a similar cut at the French Open. Ian Kington/AFP/Getty ImagesAt the US, French and Australian Open, players have challenged definitions of what tennis clothes can be thanks to looser rules (subject to referee opinion). Though she cited its circulation benefits following a severe blood-clot scare with the birth of her child, the French Open said it would bar the style in the future. However, the Women’s Tennis Association formally allowed it, and Williams continued to wear versions of the bodysuit at the 2019 and 2021 Australian Opens, normalizing the agile and simplified cut for the tennis court.

It was a supremely tense affair, with Paolini only breaking Vekić in her final service game of the set. Williams, 42, brought in $94.8 million in prize money as a tennis player before retiring in 2022, according to the Women's Tennis Association. "Those are all true," responded Williams, who won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and 73 career singles titles during her 27-year career. People around her were excited about the dollar figure, but all Williams wanted to do was deposit it and get back to work, she recalled. "I was playing to win, and if I didn't win, I wasn't thinking.

American Madison Keys wept on Court One at Wimbledon as a horrifically timed injury forced her to retire against Jasmine Paolini of Italy. The challenge stood, and the ball had clipped the line by about 4mm, putting Keys down 15-30. Had there been no challenge from Keys, Paolini would likely have challenged herself, but Keys played the ball back into the court, so the point would have been replayed instead of the American losing it. From 15-30, Paolini brought up a break point, and Keys missed a forehand wide while pivoting through the shot onto her left leg, which gave way.
