SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants are hoping a recent division rival can turn them back into a contender. Bob Melvin, a Bay Area native and former Giants player who also managed a decade in Oakland, was formally announced as San Francisco's new manager Wednesday. That completed a whirlwind few days in which the Giants received permission to interview him from the division rival San Diego Padres, where the veteran skipper had one more year on his contract. “I could not be more excited to come back to the Bay Area and manage this great organization,” Melvin said in a statement. “Bob Melvin is one of the most well-respected managers and people in baseball today,” said Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi.

First, the ride-hailing pay calculations used by researchers, drivers, and companies can vary considerably — some don't fully account for the expenses and hours that impact a driver's profits. Second, drivers' pay can fluctuate based on how often they drive, their vehicle's expenses, and how well their customers tip. Aaron Lavender, a 36-year-old full-time Uber and Lyft driver in Colorado, previously told Insider that tips make up 10% to 20% of his income. Before the court action, Alabama – which is 27% Black – had only one Black-majority congressional district out of seven seats. The case is expected to land before the all-Republican state Supreme Court, where DeSantis appointees hold most seats. A separate federal case in Georgia challenges the congressional map on constitutional grounds and is slated to go to trial next month. UtahThe state Supreme Court, in a case it heard in July, is considering whether it even has the authority to weigh in on map-drawing decisions by the GOP-controlled state legislature. Advocacy groups and a handful of voters are challenging a congressional map that further carved up Democratic-leaning Salt Lake County between four decidedly Republican districts.

Bankman-Fried faces seven criminal counts related to the collapse of FTX and Alameda, including wire fraud, securities fraud and money laundering that could put him in prison for life. President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi confirmed Sunday night that Nakken had gone through a first-round interview last week. Her husband, Robert, announced in August on social media the coach is expecting the couple’s first child — a girl — on Feb. 9. He was 295-248 over three-plus seasons, with the Giants winning a franchise-record 107 games and edging the 106-win Dodgers for the NL West title in 2021 before missing the playoffs the last two seasons. Since the pandemic began, many employees have relied on remote work to perform their jobs. But employers have applied steady and increasing pressure to do more work in the office, fueled by a belief that employees work more effectively when they’re physically present. As a result, companies continue to bludgeon their workers with return-to-office (RTO) mandates. Despite sustained efforts to get people in more often, office attendance has been flat. Yet companies continue to demand more in-office work.
