Among the four relatives who came for lunch, three of them died with symptoms of “death cap” mushroom poisoning, police said during a press briefing last week. But Patterson claims she bought dried mushrooms from an Asian grocer in Melbourne months ago and button mushrooms from a supermarket chain more recently. In a tearful exchange with local media outside her home last week, Patterson previously denied any wrongdoing. However according to ABC’s reporting Patterson’s statement said the children were away at the movies. The following evening she served leftovers but scraped the mushrooms off for the children because they do not like them.

Hints of a progressive Californian spirit were soon in evidence, as composers started appearing onstage at Symphony Hall in Boston to introduce their works, and the atmosphere began to feel more engaged. But Samuel lasted a mere 18 months, stepping down in January for reasons that are still not clear. Smith, who for a long time was the adventurous Philharmonic’s programming guru, is hugely respected, and his hiring is cause for excitement, if some trepidation. In addition, Elizabeth Rowe, the principal flutist whose distinctive, ever-so-slightly melancholy tone has defined the sound of the modern Boston Symphony, has announced that she will leave her position next year. She sued the orchestra in 2018 to secure pay equal to that of the oboist who sits to her left, John Ferrillo.

Brisbane, Australia CNN —A meal of suspected death cap mushrooms served at a family lunch in late July is at the center of a homicide investigation in Australia following the deaths of three guests less than a week later. Victoria Health issued a warning about death cap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides) in April, describing them as “extremely poisonous” and listing symptoms of consumption including violent stomach pains, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Native to Europe, death cap mushrooms were first confirmed in Australia in the 1960s, and they almost always grow near introduced trees, namely oaks, according to Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. Toxins in death cap mushrooms cannot be destroyed by boiling, cooking, freezing, or drying and eating only a small portion can lead to death. “Obviously a lot of the items that we have seized will be forensically tested in the hope that can shed some light on what has occurred at the lunch,” Thomas said.

He said the authorities had removed Ms. Patterson’s children from her home as a “precaution.”In video recorded by news outlets at Ms. Patterson’s home on Saturday, she said through tears that she “didn’t do anything” and had loved both couples. “They’re some of the best people I ever met; they never did anything wrong to me,” she said. She described her former mother-in-law, Gail Patterson, one of the guests who died, as “the mother I never had.” The police said Erin Patterson had separated from her husband but had maintained an amicable relationship with him. She did not answer reporters’ questions about what had been served at the lunch or where the mushrooms, if any, had come from. He said they had not determined what Erin Patterson had eaten, but believed that her children had not been served the same dish that the four guests were.

The Social Security Administration is working with OIG to take appropriate steps to combat fraud, an agency spokesman said. And, of course, the Hunter Biden saga plays right into that narrative …. Bret: If Hunter had been poor and Black, would the justice system have been as indulgent? And, while Republicans are jumping to conclusions without rock-solid evidence, I’m not entirely confident that Joe Biden really had no inkling of what his son was up to or that the larger Biden family didn’t benefit from Hunter’s shenanigans. Gail: Absolutely no evidence Joe Biden knew about Hunter’s lawbreaking. But one charge I’d bet on is that Hunter dropped dad’s name a lot when trying to do business with foreign honchos.

Bret: I’d be opposed to No Labels if I were convinced that all they will do is take votes from Joe Biden and throw the election to Trump. But that depends on who takes the No Labels slot: If it’s a former Democrat, it probably hurts Biden. So any party that represents our views is good for democracy, not a threat to it. A vote for the Green Party, for instance, is a vote that Biden would probably have gotten otherwise. Which means the Green Party is helping Trump.

A collection of these issues would undoubtedly be my favorite book that no one has heard of. I’ve always wanted to know who made this zine, and if there are any issues I am missing, and if I could republish them. Because of some scheduling issues, the only free days to do the audiobook came at the end of July. The day I had to narrate the book’s central trauma landed on the actual day it had happened 24 years earlier. But the best form of creative expression that takes friendship as a central concern is rap music.

The justices have decided that later this year, they’ll take up what’s known as the Rahimi case. But Rahimi — taking time out from a vigorous at-liberty life in which he opened fire in public five times over two months — appealed. Last year, the majority ruled that New York couldn’t limit the types of people allowed to carry a concealed weapon around town. The New York philosophy had been that keeping a weapon for defense in your home is one thing and wearing one outside is another. Make another scary ruling that will give Clarence Thomas a chance to add his own interpretation that’s even scarier?

What the administration was doing seems to me like a serious infringement on people’s freedom of speech, but I’d like to know your view. Callers who have sought help from the Social Security Administration in recent years have reported long wait times, dropped calls and inability to access the agency's services. A new report from the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General finds the agency experienced more than 40 telephone system disruptions between May 2021 and December 2022. During that time, the telephone was the "primary option" for the public to interact with the agency's employees, the report notes. The office oversees the Social Security Administration's programs and operations on the public's behalf. The unanswered rate reached its highest among the service disruption dates identified in the report — 80.4% — on Feb. 22 and 23.

Bret: I’d have a much easier time accepting affirmative action if the principal criterion was class, not race. Gail: You can’t leave race out, but yes, it’s important to mix it with other parts of a biography. Diversity is also about making sure universities don’t become ideological monocultures where people look different but share nearly all the same opinions and assumptions. Gail: To me, diversity is a very, very important goal — you don’t want to be living in a world in which all the folks of one race or class never interact with folks from another. Bret: Diversity can be a virtue, but it doesn’t have to apply in every conceivable setting or override other considerations, especially academic excellence.

Born, bred, toasted, buttered, jelly-jammed and honeyed in Harlem.”That’s how Audrey Smaltz, a former model and fashion industry veteran who turned 86 this month, introduced herself to me years ago at a Midtown Manhattan reception. She was the grande dame of the room, floating through it, incandescent, fun and unabashedly flirty. “I had fabulous men in my life,” she told me recently, but in 1999, the Olympic basketball star Gail Marquis, 17 years Smaltz’s junior, asked her out to dinner. Smaltz didn’t think of it as a date and said she had no interest in women at the time. But when Marquis kissed her good night, Smaltz recalled, “it was like kissing a man.” She said, “I couldn’t believe myself,” then laughed, punctuating the thought: “Whoa!”They married in 2011.

The finance chief of Hutchison's Three UK, Darren Purkis, will take the same role in the new group. But speaking of forest fires, shall we get to that latest Trump indictment? Gail: We’re obviously in history-making territory — first former president indicted in a criminal case brought by the federal government. And this one, which involves trying to stash away official papers he’d been told were government property, is certainly a classic Trump combination of shocking and stupid. That may be about as close to a slam dunk, legally speaking, as we’re ever going to get in a case like this. Whenever I want to put myself to sleep at night, I run through the names of all the former vice presidents. Back when Donald Trump announced it all seemed sorta life-as-usual, but now the race is definitely on. All the major names are men except Nikki Haley, who’s arguing that “it’s time to put a badass woman in the White House.” Well, yeah. There’s very little chance Haley’s campaign is going anywhere, but I think we can all agree she could really perk things up. In Oakland, Calif., in 1968, Huey P. Newton, the Black Panther leader, was convicted of killing a white police officer. In 1971, after two more trials and nearly two years in prison, he was cleared of all charges. That’s the question at the heart of “This Land Was Made,” the gutsy but murky new play by Tori Sampson at the Vineyard Theater. Most successful is the sitcom element, which could be titled “Trish’s,” an Oakland bar where everybody knows your name.
