Dec 12 (Reuters) - Israeli gaming firm Playtika Holding Corp said on Monday it would cut its workforce by about 15% as part of a restructuring, as the gaming sector faces a slowdown. "Three current titles have been removed from the pipeline with priority toward strategic high-growth potential new games investments," Playtika said. After posting blockbuster sales during the pandemic, the gaming sector is grappling with slowing demand this year as inflation pushes people to cut back on discretionary spend. Founded in 2010, Playtika has been known for its casino-themed games and operates apps for poker and solitaire. Playtika, which went public on the Nasdaq in January last year, has fallen nearly 50% this year, as of last close.

The workers are organizing with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) union and have until the end of December to vote on it. Microsoft has agreed to recognize the union if a majority of the workers vote in favor of it, according to the CWA. The union bid at the Microsoft subsidiary, however, stands out from some of the others because Microsoft has previously vowed to recognize the rights of workers to organize. Slack said Microsoft has been “very accommodating” throughout the process, ever since organizers first approached the company about the union. “They understand that it’s a right and they wanted to leave it up to the workers,” Slack said.

The remarks go against expectations in the gaming industry that FanDuel will cede some of its dominance as new players work to grab a bigger share of the sports betting market. The new gaming studio will be helmed by Marko Lastikka, a veteran from gaming giants Zynga and Electronic Arts, Netflix VP of Game Studios Amir Rahimi said in a blog post. Rahimi said the new studio, however, will be built “from scratch.”Monday’s announcement brings Netflix’s total number of gaming studios up to four.
