Ali Bongo: who is Gabon leader ousted in military coup?
  + stars: | 2023-08-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
[1/2] A still image from video shows Gabon President Ali Bongo being interviewed in Libreville, Gabon, September 24, 2016. Following a stroke, his fitness to rule was questioned, sparking a failed coup in 2019 as he convalesced in Morocco. Before sitting down for a televised interview with Reuters after his 2016 election win, Bongo removed a large silver watch and several gold rings. When Bongo won a 2016 election, accusations of vote meddling stoked public anger amid a period of low crude prices and belt-tightening. In 2019, a military coup was foiled, with the coup plotters citing a lack of information following Bongo's stroke in 2018.

Raindrops hang on a sign for Wall Street outside the New York Stock Exchange in Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S., October 26, 2020. Euro zone government bond yields and the euro tumbled as traders bet the European Central Bank may soon pause its interest-rate hike campaign, with money markets now pricing less than a 50% chance of further tightening. The dollar (.DXY) hit its highest since early June as both the euro and sterling took a hit. Existing home sales dropped to a six-month low in July, with new home sales numbers due later today. European and Japanese shares were up smartly too, but mainland Chinese stocks (.CSI300) underperformed yet again and dropped another 1%-plus.

Terry Funk, the Hall of Fame professional wrestler whose hardcore fighting style in the ring inspired decades of bloody brawls and entertaining matches, has died. His death was confirmed on Wednesday by World Wrestling Entertainment, the company for which Mr. Funk’s career exploded. No cause of death was given, and relatives could not be immediately reached for comment on Wednesday evening. Mr. Funk’s wrestling career, which began in the mid-1960s and lasted four decades, took him around the country and world, from playing in front of sold-out crowds for W.W.E. That extreme quality to his matches made Mr. Funk among the most celebrated wrestlers of his generation in a sport built on performer-athletes playing exaggerated or downright invented versions of themselves.

Interest for Zamrock rose in the 2010s in the West, thanks to the internet and crate-digging producers as Los Angeles-based Now-Again Records re-released several albums of WITCH and other Zamrock artists. Following their comeback, WITCH - which stands for We Intend To Cause Havoc - are now introducing their new album "Zango" with concerts in the United States and Europe. "It's a fusion of traditional music, African music, funk, blues, jazz - it's a fusion of many genres," Chanda said. REUTERS/Issei Kato Acquire Licensing RightsAug 23 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets from Jamie McGeever, financial markets columnist. After Monday's surprising resilience on Wall Street, world markets' reversion to type on Tuesday should set the tone for Asia on Wednesday - weakness in stocks, a buoyant dollar, elevated bond yields and souring investor sentiment. China's economic and financial travails remain top of mind for investors, so any sign of further incoming fiscal or monetary stimulus from Beijing will be well received. That is not something Beijing or Tokyo would do lightly, but the higher U.S. bond yields go, the more persistent the selling pressure on their respective currencies becomes. Implied yen volatility is relatively low in the yuan, and low across currency markets more broadly.

What’s the last great book you read? I loved the pair of Gwendoline Riley novels NYRB put out last year, “My Phantoms” and “First Love.” I enjoy reading about awful, sickening people, and these books are filled with them. But they’re awful and sickening in a way that, while not unfamiliar to my life experience, felt new — they’re awful and sickening in a way I’d not seen in literature before. Can a great book be badly written? I bought a book called “The Loser,” by William Hoffman Jr., based on its incredible cover (Funk & Wagnalls hardcover edition circa 1968).

Another unexpectedly tight weekly reading from the U.S. labour market sowed some lingering doubts that we're on the cusp of 'peak Fed' just yet. The tech wobble saw the Nasdaq (.IXIC) recoil 2% in its biggest drop since March. A quieter earnings schedule is topped by American Express - but nearly all the other banks have been impressive over the past week. Pessimists think the Fed is not done tightening yet and any further rate hikes after next week will just hasten a downturn in 2024. That has sobered up the Treasury market a touch after a couple of weeks of disinflation relief.

MSCI's broad Asia ex-Japan index shed 1.5% last week, its third consecutive week without rising, and is flat for the year. Much of that is due to the sluggishness of China's markets, and key indicators from the region's largest economy on Monday will get the trading week underway. Annual producer price inflation, already the most negative since 2016, is seen falling to -5.0% from -4.6% in May. Chinese banking stocks, measured by the Hong Kong-listed Hang Seng Mainland Banks Index (.HSMBI), plunged 10.5% last week. Reflecting just how poorly China's post-lockdown economy has performed relative to consensus forecasts, Citi's Chinese economic surprises index has now fallen 11 weeks in a row.

Fed funds futures showed expectations of a 25 basis point hike at the end of a two-day policy meeting on July 26 rose to 88.7%, according to CME Group's FedWatch Tool. The dollar index , which measures the U.S. currency against a basket of six others, including the euro and Japan's yen, rose 0.262% . The Fed will likely increase rates in July after the hawkish pause last month baring any surprises, said Jeffrey Roach, chief economist for LPL Financial. The dollar rose to around 144.48 yen, but was still below the 145 threshold that prompted intervention by Japanese authorities last autumn. The dollar-yen rate has broadly moved in sync with the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield , which rose to 3.9375% after the Fed minutes were released.
