Editor’s Note: John Avlon is a CNN senior political analyst and anchor. A truly stunning number of former Cabinet-level Trump administration officials are trying to warn Republican primary voters that their old boss’s reelection would be a disaster for our country. Share them with friends, family and neighbors who might be tempted to go along with the crowd and vote for Trump. But what about the Republican elected officials who have scrambled to endorse Trump before a single person has actually voted? So the voters of Iowa and New Hampshire have a disproportionate responsibility over the next few days.

GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley flubbed Caitlin Clark's name during an Iowa tailgate event. While speaking to the crowd, Haley instead said the name of the CNN anchor Kaitlin Collins. AdvertisementDuring a Saturday tailgate event in Iowa, GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley sung the praises of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball sensation Caitlin Clark, who over the past year has become one of the highest-profile female athletes in the country. But as Haley spoke to the crowd ahead of the Hawkeyes women's basketball game, she seemingly mixed up Clark's name, instead naming CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins. Avoiding mistakes in business and life comes down a few simple things, according to billionaire investor Charlie Munger, who died last week at age 99: good financial habits, integrity and "avoiding toxic people and toxic activities." Munger shared the advice during a Q&A session at Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholders meeting in May. As for avoiding toxic people, look out for those "who are trying to fool you or lie to you or aren't reliable in meeting their commitments," Munger said. At the shareholders meeting in May, Buffett shared his own thoughts on the topic. To him, most major mistakes in life can be avoided by simply being a good person who acts with integrity.

How to Create a Soulful but Up-to-Date Kitchen

DON’T LET the exposed brick fool you. Until recently, this vibrant kitchen in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, was dingy, dull and stripped of original details—the victim of a hit-and-run renovation that removed every bit of character from the circa-1900 row house, says architect-designer Sarah Jacoby. Reintroducing structure and a sense of craftsmanship via a swath of handmade Shaker-style cabinetry from deVOL, a U.K. firm beloved for their traditional benchmade joinery. Hand-painted in vivid Scullery Yellow, the cupboards strike the ideal balance between historic and “of the now,” said Jacoby. “It’s just a much more welcoming place to be now,” said the owners.

And some, including former OpenAI board member Elon Musk, fear the technology will surpass humanity in intelligence and could wipe out life on the planet. Microsoft, despite its massive stake, does not hold an OpenAI board seat, because of the company’s strange structure. Alternatively, it could become a competitor to Altman, who may ultimately decide to start a new company and drain talent from OpenAI.

Lawmakers said they expect the Louisiana Republican to unveil a continuing resolution or "CR" to avert a partial government shutdown as late as Saturday. Johnson can afford to lose no more than four Republican votes from his slim 221-212 House majority on legislation opposed by Democrats. But he is under pressure from Republican hardliners to lumber any CR with spending cuts and policy riders Democrats uniformly reject. "If there's any kind of CR, there has to be spending reductions," Representative Chip Roy, a prominent conservative, told reporters. House Republicans are trying to pass a full slate of 12 appropriations bills for fiscal 2024, which began on Oct. 1.
