It makes perfect sense to treat Donald Trump as the most immediate threat to the future of American democracy. In particular, there appears to be a view among many Republicans that the only vote worth respecting is a vote for the party and its interests. In Florida, a nearly two-thirds majority of voters backed a state constitutional amendment to effectively end felon disenfranchisement. The voters of Florida were as clear as voters could possibly be: If you’ve served your time, you deserve your ballot. Rather than heed the voice of the people, Florida Republicans immediately set out to render it moot.

CNN —The Florida law that limits drag shows in the state will remain blocked, the Supreme Court said Thursday, dealing a blow to a key initiative championed by Republican Gov. Florida had asked the high court to narrow a lower court’s injunction that stopped the law from being enforced statewide. The 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals declined Florida’s emergency application for a stay of the district court’s injunction, triggering the state’s ask to the Supreme Court for relief. Since the district court temporarily blocked enforcement of the law, the restaurant has returned to normal operations. But on Friday Mr. Jordan lost another floor vote, making it three this week, first with 20 defections, then 22, and finally 25. Some of the Jordan dissenters are still angry about the shabby treatment of Mr. McCarthy and the conference’s No. Others seem to believe Mr. Jordan is too much of a firebrand to serve as the party’s frontman. Mr. Jordan lost ground despite some notable attempts at sausage-making.
