"Left unrepaired, recalled Takata air bags are increasingly dangerous as the risk of an explosion rises as vehicles age.

The Orion plant, in operation since 1983, was beginning to transition from making a variety of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to EVs. "We started slowly introducing the Bolt on the assembly line," he said, a process that can take up to a year while working out the bugs. There's specialized training required for all the assembly workers on how to deal with those potentially dangerous connections in a safe manner, he said. In essence, "it takes more of an electrician than it does a mechanic" to assemble an EV, Brown said.. The recently upgraded center houses manufacturing laboratory facilities that simulate steps along the assembly line, including robotics and sheet metal fabrication.
Renault, Nissan messy breakup is least-bad option

Another headache is the alliance’s lopsided governance, which sees Renault hold a 43% stake in Nissan but the Japanese group prohibited by French law from exercising voting rights associated with its 15% stake in Renault. That will need Nissan’s backing, and the Japanese group might also invest in the electric division. The quid pro quo may be for Renault to give up some of its 43% share in Nissan. That implies the current value of just over 9 billion euros assigns little worth to the Nissan stake. Nissan is pressing Renault to cut its 43% stake in the Japanese group to as little as 15%, Reuters reported on Oct. 8.

In terms of big US labor contracts, however, this is just the opening act. And as with the rail unions, members are focused on staffing shortages and scheduling problems that they say have brought many employees to a breaking point. And soon after the Teamsters contract for UPS ground workers expires, contracts for UPS pilots and aircraft mechanics become amendable. That’s a major concern for unions whose members build engines and transmissions. But that settlement did not address the looming question of what a switch to EVs will mean for union workers going forward.
New York CNN Business —Toyota announced plans Wednesday to invest $5.6 billion in new plants to build electric vehicle batteries in Japan and the United States. But unlike other automakers who are going all-in on EVs, Toyota said it’s still not convinced that’s the best path forward. Just this week, Honda (HMC) announced a $4.4 billion joint investment with LG on a new US battery plant.

On Thursday, AutoX, an Alibaba (BABA)-backed startup, announced it had rolled out fully driverless robotaxis on public roads in Shenzhen. Previously, companies operating autonomous shuttles on public roads in the country were constrained by strict caveats, which required them to have a safety driver inside. In Shenzhen, AutoX has completely removed the backup driver or any remote operators for its local fleet of 25 cars, it said. Race of the robotaxiWhile AutoX has claimed an edge in China, it’s not the first time fully driverless shuttles have hit public roads. In June, Didi, China’s biggest ride-hailing firm, began offering free rides in its autonomous vehicles within a designated area of Shanghai.
As the US now claims the world's largest coronavirus outbreak, passing China and Italy on March 26, novelty "museum deliveries" of the new mid-engine Chevy Corvette continue. The $995 optional delivery is done at the Corvette Museum in Kentucky, where buyers get a guided tour and their car put on display, rather than just picking it up at a dealership. The National Corvette Museum. But the museum stayed open to private visitors, like the customers picking up the new C8 Corvette through GM's "R8C" delivery option. Now, they're back home, while the coronavirus rages on — just like the Corvette deliveries.
