GENEVA, Nov 20 (Reuters) - The International Red Cross president travelled to Qatar on Monday to meet with the leader of Palestinian group Hamas to "advance humanitarian issues" related to the group's conflict with Israel, the Geneva-based body said in a statement. President Mirjana Spoljaric met with Ismail Haniyeh, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said, and also met separately with Qatari authorities which are acting as mediators in the conflict. The ICRC, a neutral intermediary which is providing aid to Gaza and has helped escort hostages and patients from the enclave, said that the meeting was part of discussions with all sides to the conflict to improve respect for international humanitarian law. It added that it was not part of negotiations aimed at releasing more than 200 hostages seized by Hamas during their deadly incursion into Israel on Oct. 7. The assault that forced the evacuation of the hospital and left dozens of homes ablaze was blamed on the Brooklyn gang. Previous attacks in Cite Soleil and other areas have left hundreds of civilians dead as gangs pillage communities, raping and killing people inside their homes. During the recent clashes in the sprawling seaside slum that led up to Wednesday’s attack, gangs could be seen traveling by boat to surprise and kill rival gang members, Ulysse said. Then, after everyone inside the hospital grew quiet, she heard gangs outside arguing whether or not to burn the facility. Those interviewed praised the police and Ulysse, who pleaded for help via social media as the facility came under attack.

Hamas has repeatedly denied that its fighters hide under hospitals, as have Gazan health officials and hospital directors. Zarquot said “the tunnel they claim to be a Hamas tunnel is actually an electrical wire assembly point. The World Health Organization has recorded at least 137 attacks on health facilities in Gaza, which it said resulted in 521 deaths and 686 injuries. Intense hostilities surrounding several hospitals in northern Gaza are preventing safe access for health staff, the injured, and other patients” the statement reads. Israel has alleged a Hamas center is hidden in the basement there, a claim which the hospital staff and Hamas have denied.

So, what do we know about this potential eruption, what are its risks, how could it affect travel and why is Iceland, an island of just 103,000 square kilometers (40,000 square miles), home to so much seismic activity? “If it erupts undersea, it could cause a Surtseyan eruption similar to the one that happened in 1963, also in Iceland, and created the island of Surtsey. Iceland is accustomed to volcanic eruptions, though they often occur in the wilderness, away from populated areas. The Bárðarbunga volcanic system situated in the center of the country erupted in 2014, producing lava that covered 84 square kilometers (32 square miles) of highland that didn’t damage any communities. It also didn’t threaten populated areas and even become a tourist attraction as people flocked to witness a volcanic eruption.

CNN —A Philippine court has granted bail for Leila De Lima, one of the most vocal critics of ex-President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody “war on drugs” after being held in police custody for over six years. Organizations like the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch have criticized De Lima’s detention, calling it “arbitrary” and demanding her immediate release. De Lima’s bail “must lead to dismissal of last bogus charge against her,” Amnesty International said in a statement on Monday. “The court’s granting of Leila de Lima’s bail application is indeed a welcome development. “Leila has been targeted by the government for her criticism of the murderous ‘war on drugs’ and other human rights violations.

An Airbnb landlord said a tenant stopped paying rent and battled to make her leave. It took 570 days of legal back-and-forth, roughly $60,000 in unpaid rent, and a police escort before Elizabeth Hirschhorn finally left the property on Friday, Sebastian Rucci, an attorney for Jovanovic, told Insider. Within an hour of watching Hirschhorn drive away, per Rucci's motion to dismiss the eviction suit against Hirschhorn, Jovanovic changed the locks. The Times reported Jovanovic offered to pay for Hirschhorn to stay in a hotel while the repairs were completed, but she declined. Hirschhorn had refused to relocate unless Jovanovic paid her $100,000, the Times reported, citing a settlement offer the outlet reviewed.

“If we put our hands up, we will have a food crisis in Israel.”The Israel-Hamas war has plunged Israel’s agricultural heartlands, located around the Gaza Strip and in the north near the Lebanese and Syrian borders, into crisis. Meanwhile, farms in the north produce 40% of the country's sub-tropical fruit and 70% of its eggs, the Agriculture Ministry said. It also plans to build greenhouses to make up for potential shortages, construct hundreds of bomb shelters near farms and support volunteer efforts to fill labor gaps. Before the war, roughly half of Israel's agricultural workforce was composed of foreign and Palestinian labor. As Israel calls 360,000 reservists up for military service, posts from pickers to truck drivers have been left abandoned, the Agriculture Ministry says.

For many of the university chaplains and faith leaders caring for students angered and shaken by the Israel-Hamas war, the needs are acute, the days intense. “Muslim students are walking around scared, just like the Jewish students are walking around scared,” Reed said. Chaplains say some students have been feeling alienated, marginalized, hurt or intimidated by the rhetoric and positions of some administrators, faculty members or other students. Levine and his wife hosted local Jewish alumni and graduate students to provide community and a space to grieve. “There’s not enough time in the day to give all the students the support that they need,” he said.

A Trump attorney shouted, "You lied yesterday," while cross-examining a key state's witness. a lawyer for Trump's side shouted at the witness, prompting five minutes of sometimes shouted cross-accusations of perjury, witness intimidation, and showboating for the press. "Let's calm down," the judge told both sides after asking that the witness — Doug Larson, a former outside Trump Organization appraiser — be escorted out. A lawyer for Attorney General Letitia James of New York objected, without naming Trump, to the "exhortations" coming from the defense table. Fighting between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea has picked up in recent months. The fighting is taking a toll on Russia's Black Sea Fleet, which Moscow can't reinforce. Russia's Black Sea Fleet hasn't been defeated, but its losses, including the sinking of its flagship, the Moskva, weigh more heavily on Russia's war effort because of a deal signed nearly a century ago that is preventing Moscow from bringing more ships into the Black Sea. The convention distinguishes between Black Sea powers — those with a Black Sea coastline — and non-Black Sea powers. "Initially it was thought that it was a big deal that some of the Russian warships were prevented from entering the Black Sea.

Another candidate, Georgia Rep. Austin Scott, jumped into the race Friday just before Republicans met to choose a new nominee. The candidate to become speaker needs a majority of the votes from House members who are present and voting. POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONSThe main complication for House Republicans is their narrow 221-212 majority. While it has been the tradition for the speaker candidate to be a member of the House, it is not required. In January, a few Republican members even called out votes for former President Donald Trump, taking votes from McCarthy.

The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group was deployed in the eastern Mediterranean amid a growing crisis in Israel. Carrier strike groups host significant airpower and firepower, and the Ford's new technological capabilities make it a major presence. US officials announced the movement of the carrier strike group toward Israel on Sunday, the day after Hamas carried out deadly terror attacks against the US ally. The amount of firepower each vessel brings adds up, especially considering the capabilities of the air wing aboard USS Gerald R. Ford. It set out on a short maiden deployment last year and its first full deployment as part of a fully certified carrier strike group earlier this year.

SEATTLE (AP) — The city of Seattle will pay $1.86 million to the family of a man who died of a heart attack after a caution note attached to his address delayed medics' response. William Yurek, 48, died in his town house in 2021 after his son called 911 and arriving Seattle Fire Department medics initially waited outside for law enforcement before entering, The Seattle Times reported. The family alleged Yurek was wrongly included on a blacklist of people known to be hostile to police and fire crews. As Yurek’s condition worsened, his then 13-year-old son called 911 again and was told help was on the way, even though medics had already arrived. “From the beginning, the family wanted the city to take responsibility,” Lindquist said.

Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry, now the acting speaker, declared the House in recess until both parties can decide on a path forward. There is no obvious successor to lead the House Republican majority now that McCarthy has opted not to run for the job again. Immediately after the vote, McHenry, a close McCarthy ally, was named temporary speaker or speaker pro tempore. McCarthy turned over that private list to the House clerk in January when he was first elected speaker. Some members left the chamber Tuesday determined to renominate McCarthy and vote for him for speaker until it passes.
