Israel carried out a series of airstrikes against Iran on Saturday, the Israeli military said. The strikes, which residents in the capital, Tehran, reported hearing, came weeks after Iran fired a wave of ballistic missiles at Israel, forcing millions of Israelis to take cover in bomb shelters. Iran said it fired the missiles at Israel in response to Israel’s killing an Iranian commander and several leaders of Iranian-backed groups in the region. The recent exchanges between Israel and Iran have bucked both countries’ longstanding practice of avoiding direct military clashes. But here’s a look at everything we know about the Israeli military action against Iran and the events that brought the countries to this point.

Since Otto Schott invented specialty glass in 1884, the simple material has become a cornerstone of modern technology, and driving innovation. From semiconductors to clean energy, home tech, and electric vehicles, glass is the silent enabler of progress. Specially engineered laser glass helped researchers achieve what was once thought impossible: creating more energy from a reaction than was put into it. The light, amplified by active laser glass and focused through precisely crafted optical glass, delivered significant energy to a tiny fuel pellet, triggering a fusion reaction that produced a net energy gain. The fusion reaction generated 3.15 megajoules of energy, exceeding the 2.05 megajoules of laser energy delivered to the target.

Russia faces sweeping sanctions over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and has been locked out of the US dollar-dominated global financial system, including the widely used SWIFT financial messaging system, making payments and transactions challenging. The Kazan Declaration, issued Wednesday, did not mention global dollar dominance — but it highlighted alternatives. AdvertisementChina — even though it's in a prolonged slowdown — is expected to be the top contributor, accounting for about one-fifth of global growth over the five years. AdvertisementHowever, BRICS economies have a smaller global presence in global financial flows, limiting the impact of de-dollarization, the ING analysts added. Other issues include what countries would use the alternative currencies for and if the West would sanction such alternative systems, he said.

The company's energy strategy team recently pitched CEO Andy Jassy on the benefits of nuclear power. AdvertisementIn June, Amazon's Global Energy Strategy team pitched CEO Andy Jassy the idea of doubling down on nuclear power to support its growing network of data centers. Jassy agreed, according to an internal Amazon document from the third quarter that was obtained by Business Insider. The company considered tapping into at least four additional existing nuclear power plants and sought even more small modular reactor deals. Nuclear power can be safer, more reliable, and more cost-efficient in the long term compared to other power sources, according to Jacopo Buongiorno, a nuclear engineering professor at MIT.

The slump comes as investors price in higher odds of a Trump win in the upcoming US election. Emerging market stocks are headed for their worst monthly decline since January, with the MSCI Emerging Markets Index falling for a fourth day on Thursday for a 3.1% decline this month. A select few EM stocks have taken the biggest hits, with Samsung, Alibaba, Tencent, and Meituan accounting for more than half of the index's fall. "There has been a significant change in investor sentiment, and investors' risk budgets have likely been changing as a function of that." Investors are also expressing disappointment in China's stimulus measures, which initially fueled a rally in EM stocks last month.

The remains of an unidentified missile, which Ukrainian authorities claimed to be made in North Korea, is seen at a site of a Russian strike in Kharkiv, Ukraine on January 2. China, Russia and Iran have also held four joint naval drills since 2019, and China is by far Iran’s largest energy buyer. Beijing also carefully manages its relationship with North Korea – which is almost wholly economically and diplomatically dependent on China. “Russia, North Korea, Iran is the type of grouping that China least wants to openly associate itself with,” said Tong Zhao, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Shares of carmaker Hyundai 's Indian subsidiary started trading this week with much anticipation, only to drop by some 7% on its debut. Despite such success, it appears as if the stock market has given Hyundai the cold shoulder this week. First, the money raised by the stock market listing is being fed back to Hyundai's Korean parent. With the listing, the Indian subsidiary now commands nearly half the market capitalization of its Korean parent. However, the Indian subsidiary must now pay a flat 3.5% of total revenue going forward.

For Chinese imports, Trump has proposed an even steeper 60% tariff. Many economists have warned that tariffs planned by Trump will hurt global economic growth and drive up inflation in the US, as well as abroad if other countries introduce higher levies on US imports in response. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also sees a hit to global gross domestic product from increased tariffs around the world, according to its latest World Economic Outlook. Mario Tama/Getty ImagesA rise in protectionism around the world means open trade is already under threat and the ability of its champion, the World Trade Organization, to settle international trade disputes is severely constrained. “What we’d see in Trump 2 is far more radical than what we saw in Trump 1.”

Morgan Stanley is expanding the use of OpenAI-powered, generative artificial intelligence tools to its vaunted investment banking and trading division, CNBC has learned. It’s most in-demand among salespeople and other client-facing staff who often field questions from hedge funds or other institutional investors, said Huberty. Productivity boostIn a recent demonstration, the GPT-4 based chatbot was able to summarize Morgan Stanley’s position on matters from copper to Nvidia to the finer points of standing up a data center, understanding industry-specific jargon and providing charts and links to source material. The tool is embedded within workers’ browsers as well as Microsoft Teams and Outlook programs to make it readily available. CNN —Scientists have scoured the depths of the ocean and outer space for microbes to help slow global warming. “Unusual colors, smells, textures, and other data” can help scientists identify areas of interest, Tierney said. The World Economic Forum named microbial carbon capture as one of the world’s top emerging technologies in a June report, but the technology is still in its infancy, with companies running pilot-scale programs to test commercial viability. Carbon capture — which includes a range of technology from huge vacuum-type facilities able to suck climate pollution from the air to carbon-absorbing sponges — remains controversial as a climate solution. “That’s why these technologies make sense in places where such energy is available in a sustainable manner.”The potential uses of extremophile microbes in biotech extend beyond carbon capture, according to Tierney.

Since joining Applied in 2018, I've reviewed thousands of applicants' skill-based test answers, and I've noticed multiple subtleties that indicate AI was used. Beyond that, using AI can also strip an application of personality and diminish an applicant's ability to set themself apart among potentially thousands of other applicants. They may not mind the use of AI, or they might discard an applicant entirely if there is even suspicion that AI was used. The International Monetary Fund raised its growth forecast for the US economy to 2.8% this year. AdvertisementThe International Monetary Fund raised its growth forecast for the US, projecting the world's largest economy would expand by 2.8% this year instead of the 2.6% it predicted in July. However, they predicted GDP growth would slow to 2.2% in 2025 as the US government curbs its spending and the labor market cools, sapping consumption. The IMF projected global growth of 3.2% in both 2024 and 2025, virtually unchanged from its previous prediction. They underscored their latest forecast for global growth over the next five years of 3.1% was "mediocre" compared with the pre-pandemic average.

"The global battle against inflation is almost won," the IMF report trumpeted, even as it called for "a policy triple pivot" to address interest rates, government spending, and reforms and investment to boost productivity. The fund kept its global growth estimate at 3.2% for 2024 and 2025 — which it called "stable yet underwhelming." Market volatility among key downside risksHeightened financial volatility is another threat to global growth, the IMF report said. Further challenges to global financial markets could come in the final stretch of the fight against inflation. The IMF forecasts global growth will rise 3.1% annually at the end of the 2020s, the lowest level in decades.

Oil prices ended down 7% last week and are lower this year-to-date, despite Middle East tensions. Oil prices have been depressed this year because China — the world's largest oil importer — is in a prolonged economic downturn. Last year, they each accounted for 11% of the world's oil supply. This means that Saudi Arabia is looking to corner a larger market share instead of targeting higher profit margins by restricting output. Advertisement"But the problem is when oil prices spike, it sends oil companies searching for temporarily profitable oil," he added, referring to the US shale boom as the most recent example.
