Republican representatives on Monday called on CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz to testify in front of the House Committee on Homeland Security, days after the company issued a faulty software update that crashed millions of Microsoft Windows devices. The outage caused disruptions across "key functions" of the global economy, including banking, aviation, health care, emergency services and media, the lawmakers said. Kurtz said Friday that the outage was not a cyberattack or security incident, and CrowdStrike deployed a fix that day. Green and Garbarino asked CrowdStrike to set up a hearing with the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection by Wednesday at the latest. CrowdStrike and Microsoft did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.

The outage was related to a software update rolled out by CrowdStrike, a major US cybersecurity firm. The issue is specific to Falcon, one of CrowdStrike’s main software products, and is not impacting Mac or Linux operating systems, according to the advisory. US-based carriers American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Allegiant Airlines, SunCountry and Frontier Airlines all reported issues on Friday. CNN —A wildfire burning in eastern Canada has scorched more than 24,000 acres and forced thousands to flee the Town of Labrador City, where at least one hospital has been closed, officials said Saturday. Around 9,500 people have been evacuated from Labrador City, Jeremy Reynolds, a spokesperson for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, told CNN Saturday. The Town of Labrador City, in the northwestern part of the province, is remote and sits about 900 miles north of Canada’s capital city of Ottawa. The fire is spreading just three miles northwest of Labrador City. The wildfire has also led to the temporary closure of Labrador West Health Centre, according to Furey.

The Israeli military said this week that it had concluded its operation there. Palestinians returning to Shajaiye, after heeding a call by Israel to evacuate, said the neighborhood was so devastated it was uninhabitable. “The current situation in Shajaiye today is tragic,” said Ahmed Sidu, a photographer, who went back to his home as soon as he heard that Israeli forces had pulled out. Palestinian Civil Defense said on Friday that their crews began recovering bodies from Tal Al-Hawa and the Al-Sinaa neighborhoods, as they said the Israeli forces appeared to be leaving those areas as well. The Israeli military did not confirm its forces were also pulling out of those areas.

☆ Rouen fire: Blaze breaks out in spire of French cathedral

CNN —A fire broke out in the spire of the cathedral in the French city of Rouen on Thursday morning. The blaze erupted at the top of the spire of the gothic Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral in Rouen, in the northern region of Normandy. The prefecture confirmed on X that the cathedral was evacuated following the outbreak of the flames and that emergency services were working at the scene. “I turn around and I see the cathedral spire, the tarpaulin that was protecting the restoration work, which was burning, big flames, black smoke.”The construction of Rouen cathedral dates from the 12th century and it was built and rebuilt over a period of 800 years. This blaze comes five years after a massive fire broke out in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, devastating large parts of the 850-year-old church.

CNN —Five people were killed and nearly 100 injured when a tornado ripped through a town in eastern China, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. Dramatic video posted on social media showed the tornado ripping roofs off houses and uprooting trees as debris was thrown in the air. “Severe convective weather caused a tornado,” the Dongming County Emergency Management Bureau said, adding that the local government had established a command center and launched emergency response operations. According to Xinhua, 2,820 homes were damaged by the tornado in Caiyuan, Shangdong province. Earlier this month, the China Meteorological Administration released its annual ‘Blue Book’ on the state of climate change in the country.

CNN —Bomb blasts in Nigeria’s northeast Borno state have killed at least 18 people and injured 48 others, according to the state’s emergency services. The first blast hit a wedding ceremony at about 3 p.m. local time on Saturday, then another at General Hospital Gwoza and a third at a funeral. The director general of Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Dr. Barkindo Muhammad Saidu visited the site of the blast in Gwoza Town. Men, women, and children are among the dead, according to Borno State Emergency Management Agency-SEMA. This is a developing story and will be updated.
