Time is ripe for another push on carbon pricing
  + stars: | 2023-10-24 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +8 min
Other technologies, such as green hydrogen and carbon capture, are still a long way from maturity. Around 50 countries have some form of carbon price, double the number 10 years ago, and another 23 countries are planning to introduce one. The snag is that China’s carbon price is low and the United States doesn’t have a federal levy. Others argue that governments should combine carbon pricing with financial support for the most vulnerable and targeted subsidies for fledgling technologies. To hit climate targets, the carbon price would need to be $135 a tonne in advanced economies and $45 a tonne in large emerging ones by 2030.

I’m almost embarrassed to share that Zoo Pals are paper plates that feature the bright, adorable faces of animals like pigs, turtles, ducks and whales. And I had an incentive to finish my plate so I could see my Zoo Pal’s face again. In August Hefty relaunched Zoo Pals after discontinuing the plates featuring animals nearly a decade ago. Hefty said one of the reasons it brought back Zoo Pals was "so our fans can relive their fondest childhood memories." Annis’s mother takes her into the woods at night to train her in hand-to-hand combat. Her mother’s mother, nicknamed “Mama Aza,” had been a Dahomey warrior, but was sold into slavery by her husband, the king — as punishment for falling in love with a soldier. “Annis?” her mother calls from the hallway, trying to prevent her daughter from repeating her own fate. “We done.” This brief expression of maternal protectiveness gets her mother sold, led away by a “Georgia Man” who takes her south to Louisiana. Fighting between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea has picked up in recent months. The fighting is taking a toll on Russia's Black Sea Fleet, which Moscow can't reinforce. Russia's Black Sea Fleet hasn't been defeated, but its losses, including the sinking of its flagship, the Moskva, weigh more heavily on Russia's war effort because of a deal signed nearly a century ago that is preventing Moscow from bringing more ships into the Black Sea. The convention distinguishes between Black Sea powers — those with a Black Sea coastline — and non-Black Sea powers. "Initially it was thought that it was a big deal that some of the Russian warships were prevented from entering the Black Sea.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Highly pathogenic bird flu has made its first appearances in U.S. commercial poultry flocks this season, affecting one turkey farm in South Dakota and one in Utah. The outbreaks are the first reported among commercial flocks in the U.S. since the disease struck two turkey farms in the Dakotas in April. While wild birds often show no symptoms of avian influenza, infections in them are a concern to the poultry industry because migrating birds can spread the disease to vulnerable commercial flocks. South Dakota producers lost nearly 4 million birds last year. Iowa, the hardest-hit state, with nearly 16 million birds lost, hasn't recorded a case since March.
