Based in Palo Alto, California, Tidal was started by technology bankers David Handler and David Neequaye. Their firm, which employs just two dozen people according to its website, was the sole financial adviser to Cisco, while larger investment banking peers Qatalyst Partners and Morgan Stanley (MS.N) advised Splunk. Tidal's win comes as more technology bankers decide to launch their own firm amid an overall slowdown in dealmaking in the sector. Three former Qatalyst Partners bankers launched a new technology-focused investment banking boutique called AXOM Partners earlier this week, Reuters reported. The group went on to advise other major technology companies including Cisco, Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) and Twilio Inc (TWLO.N).

Goldman Sachs partners are leaving — some 202 during David Solomon's five years as CEO by Insider's calculation. In particular, before Solomon, Goldman nurtured many fiefs and then spread the wealth from the most successful ones across the firm. Of the former Goldman executives that Insider interviewed, here are the most cited reasons they gave for leaving Goldman. When both men struggled, senior partners left, and Goldman stumbled in its efforts to wind down its balance-sheet investments. Goldman Sachs partners are paid well by any standard: $950,000 in base salary and often multiples of that in annual bonuses.

In recent months, Moscow has seen high-profile drone attacks thought to be launched by Ukraine. Moscow has had air defenses for a century, but they haven't been designed for what Ukraine is doing. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dr. Richard W. Moriarty, a retired pediatrician from Pittsburgh who helped create the bright green Mr. Yuk sticker that warns kids away from poisonous substances, has died. Moriarty passed away on Thursday, according to Jeffrey Fugh of the funeral home John A. Freyvogel Sons Inc., which is handling arrangements in Pittsburgh. Moriarty was involved in establishing and developing the Pittsburgh Poison Center, where he served as director. He told the newspaper that the response by children in focus groups to the Mr. Yuk sticker's sickly green color and upset face was instrumental — "the Mr. Yuk symbol was designed by kids for kids.” The poison awareness campaign began in 1971. Visitation is Sunday and Monday, with a private funeral on Tuesday.

‘Gran Turismo’ Review: Once Upon a Pair of Sticks
  + stars: | 2023-08-24 | by ( Nicolas Rapold | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Since the late 1990s, the Gran Turismo racing games for PlayStation have brought in billions of dollars, rivaling the box-office bounties of some movie franchises. It was only a matter of time before a movie offshoot arrived, following in the tracks of other live-action adaptations of PlayStation games, including last year’s “Uncharted.” “Gran Turismo” the movie tells the true (but unlikely) story of Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo maven who became a professional racer of actual cars on actual tracks. Mardenborough’s leap from pixels to asphalt was an effective advertisement for Gran Turismo as more than a game, but his transition wasn’t all smooth. After Jann’s father (Djimon Hounsou) says there’s no future in gaming and brings Jann to his job at a rail yard, Jann goes off and wins a contest held by Nissan to recruit promising Gran Turismo players. Once again Jann exceeds expectations and beats out a more TV-ready competitor for the chance to race professionally.

Russia has lost more than 2,200 main battle tanks since invading Ukraine in February last year. Russian storage depots are deep, but they don't have an unlimited supply of armor to throw into a new fight. In fact, Russia is rebuilding tanks rather than building them, and their capacity to do so may be reaching its limit. Russia has vast stockpiles of old tanks, from T-90s barely 20 years old to rusting T-62s from the 1960s. More importantly, Russia's supply of old tanks for rebuilding is showing signs of running down.

CNN —President Joe Biden is using the presidential retreat at Camp David to help with a diplomatic mission – hosting the first-ever trilateral summit with Japan and South Korea, two countries that are putting aside a fraught history in the face of shared security challenges. The gathering will mark the first time Biden is hosting foreign leaders at the Camp David retreat, a site of historic diplomatic negotiations for past presidents. From the start of his administration, Biden has sought to draw Asian allies like Japan and South Korea closer, in part, to counter an ascendant China. Biden’s first foreign leader visits at the White House were Japan and South Korea, and he visited the countries back-to-back in May 2022. Biden has worked to foster his individual relationships and cooperation with South Korea and Japan.

Most famously, President Jimmy Carter brokered the Camp David accords in 1978 between Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The first foreign leader to visit Camp David, then known as "Shangri-La," was British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who was there for World War Two talks with Roosevelt. Eisenhower, who named Camp David for his father and grandson, would grill steaks for family and friends. One time George W. Bush hosted Russian leader Vladimir Putin at Camp David and introduced Putin to his Scottish terrier, Barney. Sakana AI founders Llion Jones, left, and David Ha, meet at a rooftop bar in Tokyo. Jones, a co-author of Google's prominent Transformers research paper, is the generative AI research lab's technology chief, and Ha, a former Google research scientist, is its CEO. He was one of eight authors of the pivotal Transformers research paper, which is central to the latest in generative artificial intelligence. He's joining fellow ex-Google researcher David Ha to build a generative AI research lab in Tokyo called Sakana AI. The T stands for Transformers, an architecture behind much of today's frenetic generative AI activity.

Aug 17 (Reuters) - Two prominent former Google (GOOGL.O) researchers, one of whom was a co-inventor of the “transformer” artificial intelligence architecture that paved the way for the generative AI boom, announced on Thursday they had started a new AI company based in Tokyo. Sakana AI, founded by David Ha and Llion Jones, declined to disclose funding details. Ha was previously the head of research at Stability AI and a Google Brain researcher. After the famous paper came out, advances in generative AI foundation models have centered around making the “transformer”-based models larger and larger. Instead of doing that, Sakana AI will focus on creating new architectures for foundation models, Jones told Reuters.

Instead, individual units are putting in orders for FPV drones, and these outfits are doing what they can to meet the demand. It is unclear if or how the FPV drones factored into this figure. The US Army is rushing to develop its own tank-killing drone that soldiers can carry into combat. The weapon will be a loitering munition, a type of drone being used widely in the war in Ukraine. Though loitering munitions such as the US-made Switchblade have been around for years, they have seen their most prolific use in Ukraine. Russia has used military-grade Lancet 3 loitering munitions to hunt Ukrainian artillery and disrupt Ukraine's counteroffensive. What is also interesting about LASSO is that the Army is emphasizing it as an anti-armor weapon.

They effectively end the sale and manufacture of incandescent light bulbs. You don't have to throw away incandescent bulbs you already own, but switching could save you money. You can thank — or blame — new federal energy efficiency regulations that went into full effect Tuesday. The company has also begun offering retired workers meals at the canteen so they can share knowledge of recently re-started lines producing Soviet-era ammunition for Ukraine, he added. Jiri Hynek, president and executive director of the Defence and Security Industry Association (DSIA) of the Czech Republic, told Reuters a lack of workers could push production out of central Europe. The association, which represents more than 160 companies, said exports accounted for around 90 percent of the industry's production of weapons and military-related supplies. Of that, Hynek estimated that supplies of military equipment to Ukraine accounted for 40% of exports.
