Chew, meanwhile, clapped back, “American social companies don’t have a good track record with data privacy and user security. But if lawmakers were serious about protecting the digital data of millions of American social media users, targeting TikTok alone is a limited way to achieve this goal. Separately, US intelligence authorities have said that Russian operatives were able to exploit US-based social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter as part of an election meddling campaign in the lead-up to the 2016 US presidential vote. Sherman said he thinks some lawmakers are raising important national security concerns regarding TikTok. Ultimately, Jameel Jaffer, the executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, called the bill a “missed opportunity” for Congress to take real action regarding their concerns about US user data.

But three heated House primaries in the Land of Lincoln next week illustrate the broader vulnerabilities of both major political parties going into the general election: age, extremism and immigration. In today’s newsletter, I’m going to tell you about some fascinating primary races that will shed light on some broader trends in U.S. politics. Let’s start with Illinois’s 12th Congressional District, in the southern part of the state. Mike Bost, a Republican and Marine Corps veteran, was first elected to the House in 2014. Democrats tried to tar him as “Meltdown Mike,” highlighting his angry outbursts in the State Legislature and warning, “He’d make Washington worse.”Well, those were simpler times.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A suspect in a weekend shooting that killed two people and injured another at a North Carolina home died in a shootout with deputies hours afterward outside another house, a sheriff said Sunday. The deputies and four minor children inside the home with Strawser weren't hurt, he added. The sheriff's office said Strawser and the three who were shot knew each other, so it wasn't a random home invasion. With the house surrounded, sheriff's office negotiators tried to get Strawser to come out, according to Campbell. The Browns still have a shot to get more value out of their trade that sent three first-round picks and three lower picks to Houston for Deshaun Watson. Here's a look at some of the worst trades in the NFL over the years:HERSCHEL WALKER TO MINNESOTAPhotos You Should See View All 60 ImagesThe Cowboys launched their dynasty in the 1990s when Jimmy Johnson realized the high value of draft picks and turned Herschel Walker into a huge haul of them. The trades helped Dallas acquire draft picks that led to Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson, Russell Maryland and Kevin Smith, who contributed to three Super Bowl titles. That led the Falcons to cut ties quickly, trading him after the season to Green Bay for a first-round pick. But the Seahawks were able to turn him into a first-round pick from quarterback-starved Chicago in 1997.

The number of robocalls placed in the US peaked at around 58.5 billion in 2019, according to estimates by YouMail, a robocall blocking service. For all robocalls, including those Americans have authorized from their bank or doctor’s office, any use of AI would have to be disclosed under the proposed law. But even as officials have gained some ground on unwanted robocalls, those making the calls are increasingly turning to new technologies such as artificial intelligence to stay a step ahead. It would also seek to force phone providers to offer free robocall-blocking services to consumers and require the FCC to maintain a public list of the top 100 illegal robocall campaigns.
