Power show that, despite more and more EV chargers being available, EV owners are actually getting less satisfied with public charging. When it comes to consumer satisfaction, EV charging is in some very poor corporate company. Away from home, charging your EV costs more than charging at home, sometimes twice as much. CNN —Fiat, the Italian car brand best known in the United States for its tiny, retro-styled cars, is putting its name on an apartment building across the river from Manhattan. The Fiat House residences will be in a far more pragmatic location, near the western approaches to the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Fiat House residents will have access to a car-sharing fleet of Fiat 500e electric cars, according to an announcement from Fiat and UNLMTD Real Estate. The building will include more than 300 apartment units ranging from studios to 2-bedrooms, some furnished, according to the announcement. While Fiat’s cars cost far less than those of ultra-luxury brands like Bentley and Aston Martin its sales have been similarly small in number.

New York CNN —General Motors announced Thursday that it is putting the brakes on its driverless cars, halting a service that provides driverless rides in multiple cities. The move comes days after California revoked GM’s permits to test and operate fully driverless vehicles on the state’s roads. GM said the driverless vehicles are safer than human-driven cars. But there have been numerous problems with the vehicles’ operations. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced it has launched an investigation into the safety of its driverless vehicles around pedestrians.

CNN —Oil and gas company BP has agreed to purchase $100 million worth of electric vehicle chargers from Tesla. This marks the first time Tesla has ever sold chargers to another company, according to an announcement from BP. BP will begin installing the chargers next year, but no specific number of chargers was mentioned in the announcement. These chargers won’t look like other Tesla chargers, though. BP Pulse, BP’s EV charging business, operates 27,000 charging points currently and has announced plans for rapid expansion.

The document also reveals that the Cybertruck, like other electric trucks, will be heavy. In Tesla vehicles, as in most electric vehicles, all-wheel-drive is created by having one or two motors driving the front wheels and one or two driving the back wheels. Because of their heavy battery packs, electric trucks tend to weigh more than gas-powered trucks, adding as much as 2,000 pounds to their GVWR. When Tesla first unveiled the Cybertruck in late 2019, no other automakers offered electric trucks on the market. Various automakers have recently had to offered discounts on their electric vehicles to help clear backlogs of unsold EVs on dealer lots.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles revoked Cruise’s permits to test and operate fully driverless vehicles on California roads, the agency said in a statement Tuesday. About three weeks ago, a Cruise vehicle hit a pedestrian in downtown San Francisco who had first been hit by another vehicle then and was propelled by this collision into the path of the Cruise driverless car. This was the incident that ultimately precipitated the DMV to revoke the permits, according to an emailed statement from Cruise. Regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the safety of Cruise autonomous vehicles around pedestrians. This summer, Cruise and Waymo, the driverless car arm of Google-parent Alphabet received permission from San Francisco regulators to begin regular paid driverless taxi services in that city.

CNN —Thanks to growing competition in the market, and some reticence from consumers, automakers and car dealers are offering huge discounts on electric vehicles, particularly luxury models. In September 2022, the average electric vehicle purchased in the United States, excluding Teslas, went for about $1,500 over sticker price. (Remember, for most new vehicles, the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, or sticker price, is just a suggestion, with the final selling price usually higher or lower.) In sheer dollars, the average price paid for a non-Tesla electric vehicle actually went up slightly over the past year. CNN —Toyota has joined the growing list of automakers that have decided to switch to using Tesla’s charging standard. Beginning in 2025 all Toyota electric vehicles sold in the US will have charging ports designed to work with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), rather than the Combined Charging System plugs automakers in the US now use. Toyota’s announcement means that all of America’s best-selling automakers — Toyota ranks second only to General Motors in US sales — have agreed to switch to Tesla’s standard in the next few years. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk announced in November of last year that he was inviting other automakers and charging companies to adopt Tesla’s NACS. Major charging companies have announced they will offer both types of cables to service electric vehicles with either type of charging port.

CNN —General Motors and Honda, along with Cruise — GM’s autonomous driving subsidiary — have agreed to create a driverless ride-hailing company in Japan. The company will use the Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle to give rides in Tokyo, Japan’s largest city. The Cruise Origin, an electric vehicle GM builds at a factory in Detroit, has no steering wheel, pedals or space for a driver. GM said it plans to build 500 of the vehicles for the Tokyo ride-hailing service, which is expected to be the first autonomous ride-hailing service in Japan, according to the companies. “The range of situations our [autonomous vehicles] have encountered is quite broad,” Voigt said, noting obstacles such as jugglers on the streets of San Francisco and donkeys in Austin.

CNN —General Motors is putting off adding a second factory for production of its electric pickups until late 2025, the automaker announced Tuesday. But GM had planned to start producing the electric pickups at an additional Michigan factory, Orion Assembly just north of Detroit, as well. Instead, when those electric vehicles go out of production at the end of this year, the factory will not shift quickly to making the trucks. General MotorsGM’s decision will result in fewer electric pickups being built next year but the automaker declined to discuss the extent of a reduction. GM had announced, in 2022, that it would spend $4 billion to convert Orion Assembly to make the electric trucks.

In fact, auto loan interest rates are the highest they’ve been since 2007, when the world was heading into a massive financial crisis. More than 70% of buyers of new large SUVs now have monthly payments over $1,000. Keep it shortPeople often try to reduce their monthly payments by taking out longer loans. Spreading the payments over more years can keep the monthly amount lower, but it means you’re paying more in interest. Leasing is another way to keep monthly payments down.

It’s not that simple, though, and some researchers argue that the labor savings of electric vehicles have been greatly overstated. These were among several research reports that found little total difference in the labor hour requirements of EV manufacturing compared to gas-powered cars. Boston Consulting estimates that making battery cells takes up about 8% of the total labor to produce an entire automobile. That’s slightly higher than the percentage of labor needed to produce a gasoline engine, he said. Ford also expects to train 5,000 people to work at a joint-venture battery manufacturing facility currently under construction in Kentucky.

In a few cases, according to NHTSA, ARC air bag inflators could be blocked by small pieces of debris, stopping the gases from escaping as they should. In May 2023, General Motors recalled 1 million GM vehicles with the air bags. NHTSA estimated the risk of one of these inflators rupturing at one in every 370,000 air bag deployments. But officials said the only way to know if an air bag has the defect is for it to actually rupture. NHTSA and various automakers are still working to get vehicle owners to replace all the air bags involved in that recall.

CNN —Ford is pausing work on a new, $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan, even as the transition to electric vehicles has become a major sticking point in a United Auto Workers strike against automakers Ford, GM and Stellantis. No final decision has been made on whether the plant will, ultimately, become operational, said Ford spokesman T.R. If completed, the plant will be located on a 950-acre site in southern Michigan near the town of Marshall. The battery plant was planned to operate in addition to plants in Kentucky and Tennessee that Ford announced in 2021. Ford has said it plans to be able to produce 2 million electric vehicles globally by late 2026.

New York CNN —Now that the United Auto Workers union has started a strike, the US auto market is about to be thrown into turmoil all over again. Auto sales hadn’t entirely recovered from the pandemic, but car shopping in the United States could change once more. The auto manufacturing crises of recent years have left auto dealers better prepared to deal with disruptions, said Scott Kunes, chief operating officer of Kunes Auto and RV Group, which owns more than 40 dealerships in the Midwest. It pays to be flexibleBefore the strikes started, auto dealerships had reasonably healthy inventories of new vehicles, according to Michelle Krebs, an analyst with AutoTrader. That means they’ll still have vehicles to sell for a few weeks, but, as the strike wears on, the choices available will start to dwindle.
