CNN —Two presidential task forces formed to recommend how Harvard can combat antisemitism and anti-Muslim, anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian activity on campus have spoken: Harvard needs to act now. Harvard needs to do more work to promote diversity education and promote multiple perspectives on campus, the task force chairs recommended. The antisemitism task force sought to get Harvard to clarify its values, act against discrimination and hate, improve the university’s disciplinary process, promote dialogue and training on the topic and support Jewish life on campus. Alan Garber, Harvard’s interim president, said he appreciated the recommendations and the task forces’ candor. And the House Education Committee lambasted the university for its response to a subpoena seeking information on how it handled campus protests.

London CNN —Dairy farmers in Denmark face having to pay an annual tax of 672 krone ($96) per cow for the planet-heating emissions they generate. The country’s coalition government agreed this week to introduce the world’s first carbon emissions tax on agriculture. On average, Danish dairy cows, which account for much of the cattle population, emit 5.6 tonnes of CO2-equivalent per year, according to Concito, a green think tank in Denmark. Using the lower tax rate of 120 krone results in a charge of 672 krone per cow, or $96. With the tax break in place, that levy will rise to 1,680 krone per cow in 2035 ($241).

Earlier this month Virginie Viard, the creative director of Chanel, the second largest luxury brand in the world by sales, left the house. Though critics (including this one) had generally disliked her work, which was awkward and seemed to equate shorts with fresh ideas, Chanel management had always declared its loyalty to her, and the revenue kept going up — to almost $20 billion last year. One week Ms. Viard was showing her cruise collection in Marseille, France; a few weeks later, she was gone. According to Bruno Pavlovsky, the president of fashion at Chanel, Ms. Viard did not have anything to do with the couture show held this week. That’s saying something, given the most memorable feature of her last couture was that every look was paired with shiny white tights.

He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

New York CNN —America’s biggest banks are well positioned to survive a severe recession while continuing to lend to households and businesses, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday in its annual bank resilience test, commonly referred to as a stress test. However, banks could suffer higher losses, if a significant economic downturn were to hit now versus a year ago. As a result of the banking crisis that fueled the Great Recession, the Fed conducts stress tests to monitor and uncover potential signs of weaknesses in the financial system. At the same time, banks’ income from fees was lower, giving them less of a buffer to absorb those losses. “The goal of our test is to help to ensure that banks have enough capital to absorb losses in a highly stressful scenario.

The transatlantic interconnector is still a proposal, but networks of green energy cables are starting to sprawl across the world’s sea beds. CNN —Toys “R” Us is proving artificial intelligence could have a future in film. The retail toy brand premiered a short promo film at the 2024 Cannes Lions Festival in France this week that was created almost entirely by using OpenAI’s new text-to-video tool. Toys “R” Us said it believes it is the first brand to debut a film using the technology. A spokesperson for the creative agency told CNN that Toys “R” Us has not yet made a decision if the promo will become a TV ad. CNN —Rivian and Volkswagen Group are forming a joint venture to create vehicle software, the two companies announced Tuesday. The two automakers did not provide a name for the new joint venture company or name its leadership team. Rivian’s fundamental vehicle software design is expected to provide the basis for the new company’s software. The technologies designed by the company will include both the user-interface software that runs things like the entertainment system and gauges and deeper vehicle software that interacts with things like the vehicle’s motors.
